No...I don't think they are being let off any hook. Talk radio today is blasting them pretty hard! Deservedly so. There is no way a pro team should pitch and hit this poorly. I'm not jumping off the wagon just yet, I've been a fan too long to quit on baseball only one week in!
I wish we were like last years (and maybe this years) Rangers where their pitching sucked, but their batting was unbelievable and the game where always high numbers. It's still only seven games in to the season, so maybe we will have an opposite of last season's Astros. Last year we started off doing very well then dwindled off, and maybe this year we will start off terrible and heat up later on.
Don't worry, they're just going to match their spring record start of 1-15, then go on a nice long 2, maybe 3 game winning streak.
We're all mad. Astros just had their first post-game team meeting with Wade and Cooper. I hear they took turns flogging themselves with wet jock straps. Let's all calm down, take the much needed day off, and come back with a fresh attitude for Wednesday's game.
A 60 win season might be the very best thing that could happen to this franchise at this point in time. That is if that type of season gives management a more realistic view of where this team is at. Ideally a rebuilding should have occurred after the 06 season, but instead the club made desperate moves like signing Lee to an albratross 100 million dollars contract, like signing Woody Williams to a eight figure deal, like dealing for two years and 26 million on Tejada, and, as The Cat so rightly railed against, like ticketing millions to league average (at best) middle relievers (also, heck, as good as he is, is Valvedre that much better than Qualls? I know he is paid a whole lot more). It caused us to lose mutliple high round draft picks during that time period and may have caused Drayton to skimp on draft picks bonuses and minor league free agents. At the very least it is currently handcuffing any moves the club wants to do for the next ~4 years. Imagine how far an extra 40 million would have gone this past offseason. Thankfully, we dodged a bullet this winter when the recession cause the astros to pull their 3 years-28.5 million dollar offer to Randy Wolf. I'm glad the astros aren't stuck with that deal, but I'm also terrified that management ever offered it. 60 wins, some high draft picks, and a new GM may be the healthiest realistic outcome for this year.
We're barely scoring 2 runs a game this year....Its not like we're stacked on offense. We need hitting and pitching.
Hey the Rockets are gonna finish with the 2nd or 3rd seed and the Texans are on the rise so here is to blowing it up and having nothing but young guys to at least make it fun 91-96 was fun watching those guys develop into 97-99 division champs
I'm not suggesting that they are stacked, but the best trade pieces are in the lineup. You can't trade crappy pitching with no potential for better pitching, so the trade will eventually have to come out of the offense.
I understand you are upset but dude you cant be a true Astros fan if u jumping off the ship after 8 games.Come on now.
I don't think this team can truly be a winner with Drayton at the helm. His hands-on approach will make any GM fail. Unless he pulls back and actually accepts that 'rebuilding' can be allowed, then we will be stuck in this position for a long, long time.
It's early and luckily I've only seen one game...that game was atrocious but I still believe the bats will come alive and so will the pitching...just not in April...
Except that this team was one of the best teams in baseball for about a decade from 1996 to 2005 with Drayton at the helm.
Keep fighting the good fight Major. Hopefully you don't get a concussion from the headbanging. For what it's worth, George Steinbrenner is the most hands on owner in the history of baseball. They've won a little bit up there in New York.
i can't believe we have to continue saying this...i'm thinking the age gap is the only thing that feeds this. growing up with a pitiful astros team, i can't imagine complaining about 96-05.
July and August are interminable when the Astros suck. I just hope the Rockets fill my empty hours until way into June.
That's the way I feel. I love the Stros, and no matter how bad they are playing I will still watch. They are like a bad car wreck, I just cant look away.
