I think the mafia as an anachronism statement was when the tour bus went by Phil's guy and the tour guide says "little Itally used to be 40 square blocks but is now just this one block of shops and stores" also Phil's second (forgot his name right now) is talking to Phil about not finding Tony and he is surrounded by nothing buy Asians. It was a recurring theme during the show; a couple of years ago , two older mobsters went in to shake down the new Starbucks, to sell them protection, and then manager said the computer tracked every scoop of coffee back in the home office, there wasn't any cash to give them; so they just left. Here's a fun read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DiMeo_Crime_Family
Exact-a-mundo. It wasn't the ending many people wanted, but it leaves you with the feeling Jebus describes above, and leaves it wide open for a Sopranos movie that will focus on the impending trial due to Carlo's snitching, and Tony's constant "looking over his shoulder" tension.
Could care less, either way. It was a crap show. Although I am in the mood for onion rings and Journey.
on second thought the ending was pretty good. the entire diner sequence, I was expecting Tony to get hit. Chase really built it up pretty well. Am I annoyed I didnt get to see the money shot? yeah, but I think if Tony had gotten rubbed out at the diner when we all expected it, it would have been cliche and totally not in line with the direction of the show since season 1 with its dream sequences and stuff.
Great build up at the end. Chase left us not knowing who would get whacked...the immediate family couldnt be touched so I knew Meadow wasnt going to die unless a car hit her. This just left us hanging and even more anxious for the the Soprano movie. I was pissed at the end also, but then I watched it again and appreciated it even more.
Reak weak ending, IMHO...Overal, gald Phil got whacked, but getting run over by the SUV...classic... It tied up a lot, and like everyone said, left it open for a movie...I though tony was going to get whacked in the end, but my black the screen as soon as Meadow comes in...why not have her sit down and chat and then black out... Overall, the Sopranos were one of the best shows on TV ever, especially the early years... Edit: AJ was pretty funny...Finally getting some HS chick...then his car burning...Remember the happy times...
The ending really screwed with our minds. It has everyone talking. If that doesn't represent a good ending, then I don't know what does. Sure, it could have been all cookie-cutter and wrapped it all up in a neat little package. But, then it would have been labeled something else...predictable, cliche, etc. . I loved the stupid parallel parking sequence by Tony's daughter. I know we all thought her not being able to parallel park might save her life while the rest of the family gets whacked. Or, it might delay her enough to see the family whacked as she walks in but not be among the victims. Or...? I actually did think my Tivo was on the fritz at the moment it ended...until the end credits appeared. I have had my Tivo reset itself on occassion and I have to go through an entire 10 minute process of re-acquiring satellite data to get back up. I thought it froze and I was about to get a "Please stand by..." message. It would be funny if the show finale somehow sent a code to force a Tivo reset. That would be the ultimate ending for Tivo users. lol
All those complaining about the ending... what would YOU have done?? What would have made you happy? If people actually respond to that, I guarantee you'll get a variety of responses... ie, no one solution would have "appeased" the mass audience of Sopranos fans. Hell, just in this thread alone, you can see the multiple reasons why people watch this show. Some crave the typical mob violence, sexual endeavors, and degenerate nature of these guys. Some are enamored by Chase's use of metaphors, apt music, symbolism, allegory, and psychological reflections. Some just like the straight-up t&a. Overall, its sad that it had to go... but as the promo said before the finale, "it had to happen eventually."
And BTW Does Chase have a subliminal anti-SUV bias? First AJ's SUV goes up in flames right before him and his girlfriend get it on and then the, how shall we say, Phil meeting his demise via an SUV stuck in gear? hum.....
I personally thought the Black screen went on a few seconds too long. Maybe a couple seconds too long?? I thought my TimeWarner DVR froze.. I was like ****! Worst time for my signal to go out.. LOL.. And then the credits began rolling.
Guys, this show isn't Alias or West Wing. It doesn't have a happily ever after ending like those shows did. It leaves you wondering, wanting more like any good show should. The show ended like it started with all its fans talking about it for days like we did the first time we met T, Sil, Paulie, "Christafa" and Puss. I hope the writers of Lost and 24 learn from the Sopranos and not try to milk those series for every second of air time possible. Go out on top with a huge fan base rather than people just hanging on to see how things end. RIP Sopranos
Tony wrecks his Escalade with Aide and then Christafa wrecks his with T. Carmella is the only one who could keep her in one piece. "It is a Cayenne... like the peppa'."
man, i can't believe i just now figured this out. Don't Stop Believing" by Journey DSTOIENY TONY DIES. damnit, chase. you are beautiful.
that's kinda ridiculous, you can make up a plethora of phrases with those words, if all the words made a sentence that made sense then it'd be plausible.
I think the recurring role of the SUVis a reference to the fake sense of security that SUV's provide.
I think Tony's life goes on as before "Oh, the movie never ends It goes on and on and on and on" Thats from Don't Stop Believing.
