Wow...didn't quite expect to see so much negativity (thought this was great news, assuming you wanted a competent online service for the PS3).

How do the features offered by Xfire compare to those offered by XBL? Serious question here, I don't really follow this stuff (never go online with my games). I'm hearing some people say this is awesome news, while others are very disappointed. I don't know how I should react, if and when I go online.

They seem to be almost the same from what I can tell, and the difference, as mentioned, would be that the PS3 online system would be free to use. The only other thing that this might offer over XBL would be if the Xfire guys somehow got the cross-platform stuff (PC/PS3 (*edit:and PSP too?*)) working before MS did with XBL (Live Anywhere, or whatever it is called); I doubt that will happen though...might be something they add later down the line (if ever).

FWIW, I thought I read that Xfire was one of the best, if not the best, clients for playing games online via the PC. I seem to be getting differing thoughts here. In any case, while it might not (better yet...probably won't) match XBL feature for feature, it seems like it will be a million times better than the PS2's online service.

They were most likely working together long before the deal was signed. For example, check out this article from February about Xfire:
    http://money.cnn.com/2006/02/17/technology/fastforward_fortune/index.htm
I doubt you'll get 2 controllers. You don't really need a memory card, as mentioned, although if you have a USB memory stick (or a SD/MS/CF memory stick if you get the $600 SKU), you'll technically already have a memory card. Might even be able to use a USB HDD.

The services provided by Xfire should be free to all users...assuming the stuff I mentioned in the other thread about some Sony patents doesn't go into effect.

I think the only thing centralized would be the services involving communication/networking/account management/etc (Global Logins, Friend Lists, Messaging, etc.). I'm guessing games will be played on 3rd party servers (unless it is a Sony game of course), unlike XBL. Considering that Myspace provides some of the same functionality for free and with like 100M accounts, I don't think it will be that expensive (like Myspace, I'm assuming there will probably be some ads to go along with the service).

It is possible, although I don't think it would happen unless the PS3's online service offered similar functionality to XBL at no charge whatsoever (and even then, it might not happen right away). MS did get a deal done with some advertising firm a while back, so they could still get some revenue from that while making the service free.

That's getting ahead of the situation though. We haven't even seen how Xfire and the PS3 will work. It might not even offer all the features that Xfire currently supports for the PC (which, apparently, still isn't enough to match XBL, at least for some). Might have to wait until TGS to figure out how this really impacts things.

You said "competent" - Xfire is not.

It's extremely buggy & customer support is nonexistant - so tell me how Sony, a company known for having crap customer service, is going to fix that in 2 months, as well as take buggy Xfire, debug it, and integrate it for use with the PS3.

This will suck. It also cracks me up that for months they talked about building a proprietary solution to the "Live" problem, then all of a sudden they just ditch that & partner up with Xfire.

    Riiiiiiggghhhttttt.

Sony has yet to present ONE convincing argument as to why to pick a PS3 over a 360 or a Wii (or both at the PS3's price).

I was not aware of those issues. I've actually never heard of Xfire until today. Any info I've learned about them has come mostly from reactions to this news (first I've seen those problems mentioned, which I guess shouldn't be surprising considering the small amount of Xfire users that have commented on this). Some seemed to love Xfire, so I assumed it was a quality service.

Obviously, if those problems do occur with the PS3's communication/account services, then this may not be as good as I expected (assuming Xfire can even manage to offer the same features on the PS3 as they have on the PC).

I don't believe Sony said they'd come to this solution via a propietary solution...just that they'd get their somehow (most probably assumed it would be proprietary given how Sony does not usually ask for help in creating the software for their products).

Also, as I mentioned, it seems like they only signed the deal recently. It appears as though they've been working together for at least 7 months (9 by launch), and maybe even longer. If I'm not mistaken, Sony didn't really start detailing their online plan until around GDC in March, which would have been after they started working together (makes sense given the features they said the PS3's online service would have). They might have made some comments prior to that about it being better than the PS2's online service and more like XBL, but I don't recall specifics (if you can call them that) until around that time period.

    How about this?

    :)

Seriously, while Sony is making it incredibly difficult on themselves, I do believe there are at least a few reasons to pick a PS3 over a 360/Wii. Some of it involves non-gaming stuff (HD-movie playback, Linux applications, possible PSP connections, etc.), while some of it involves some things gaming related (developer support, processing power, free online play, etc.). The importance of those factors can vary from person to person, but for some, those are more than enough to warrant a purchase of a PS3 over a Wii/360/Wii60...assuming Sony doesn't continue to screw everything up for themselves. :)

Yes I love Sony for having free online services. I might just pick one up in the long run just because of the free online gaming. $50 is still $50, i rather pay nothing for online gaming and use that $50 towards something else. PS2 was also free and I never encountered problems like lag or anything.

The same people that bash the PS3's price bash it for its FREE service? I am starting to feel like so many people bad mouth the PS3 because they simply dont want it to succeed. They want it to fail because they dont want to shell out the 600+ for it. If the PS3 dies then people can have their 350$ xbox machine and not worry about Sony getting exclusive 3rd party games. I want the PS3, I dont like anything the Wii is about. Yet I have never felt the need to bash it. Maybe because its not threatening? Im not going to lie. The overall disdain for the PS3 across the US scares me. I plan on buying it, if "yall" dont buy it then companies will stop supporting it with software. And I will be left with what... a Blu Ray player? Anyone else think Sony is doomed to fail before its even released? Will I be forced into living with the 360 for the next 8 years?

I'm not informed on how an online service makes its money, but if they're offering it for free, I wonder how they're going to compete with a pay service like XBL in the features.

I think Nintendo's plan is to offer their library of games up for sale and using 3rd party servers or preferably local area networks within a certain radius. Sony's been hinting something bigger.

I'm not exactly sure how it works either, but I think it is possibly wrong to assume that if MS charges $50 a year for those features, it MUST cost a lot of money to implement them (or anything close to them). So far, they've been the only console to have a half-way decent online service, so it isn't like there would be any competition that might suggest that price is as low as MS can go. Plus, if you consider the losses that MS has taken on the Xbox business, charging for those features may be more about helping the Xbox business make some extra money rather than paying for the maintenance costs for having such a service. For all we know, it may cost MS next to nothing to offer those features, but since they're down more than $5B, they'll go ahead and get a little bit of extra cash because they can.

It just seems like there are a lot of networking services in other areas (non-gaming) which offer similar features (chat, email, friend lists, rankings, profile picture, file hosting, etc.), and yet they don't ask for a dime (some even have WAY more accounts than possibly both XBL and PNP will have...maybe even combined). I think it just might be wrong to assume that you can't offer those things for free on the PS3 or even the 360. I'm not even sure if the server fees for playing games online are really that bad (as seen by mostly free online play on the PS2 and PC...except for some MMO games).

Again, ads would probably be needed just to make this feasible, but I don't think that would be a problem. Considering the way consoles are designed, Sony and Microsoft might even get more money for allowing different companies to promote their products (EX: movie trailers available for download). Charging nothing might even bring in more money than charging an annual fee (more people use online service, more revenue from ads).

Strange way of looking at it. You need to ask yourself why you specifically want a PS3.

What are some examples of this that you consider? And I wouldn't necessarily use Myspace...for one there is no transfer of data like online gaming, and for two; well, it's ****. Myspace is as much a buggy, jumbled mess as anything on the Internet.

I always considered the centralized servers - including the seamless integration between games of all different publishers and how it ties to each member's information - and the gaming associated with them to be the meat of XBL.

The 'networking' and messaging stuff...well, I always felt that was the basic part.

Strong history of support from game developers I covet. The strongest graphics available. Blu Ray technology. A little bit of admitted bias, same reason I prefer Chevy (so kill me). etc...

I was a sony fan with ps1 and ps2 but after comparing the prices and other reviews i decided to buy xbox360 because much of the new tech in PS3 is not needed for me. Like, the bluray (not yet), PSP connection (don't own one). I bought my xbox360 premium for $340 and enjoying the same graphics that i will be getting in PS3.

Then you shouldn't be so worried. If you want the Blu Ray technology, then you have to bite the bullet and accept the risk. If it's worth it to you, it's worth it to you. If down the line you end up with a doorstop (in terms of Blu-Ray movies), then at least you know you went into it on your own terms.

In addition, whatever games you are looking forward to are still going to make it out. The chances that those developers will drop their game midway and leave are very minor.

Now, further down the line, who knows. And there's also the distinct possibility of less exclusives (i.e. not just on Playstation anymore). But again, a risk you have to be willing to take. Understand, though, that the developers you covet -for the most part - unlike you, don't give a rat's ass what logo is on the machine. They will follow the userbase, aka the money, and that's pretty much it.

So, in simplest terms; you have to decide how much you value and the worth of that 'bias' you say you have. :) If the value is higher than the risk for you, then you should be confident in what you are going to get.

    Now, buying at launch...well, that's a different story. :D

Thats precisely the scenario I am scared of. If the market leaves the PS3, the developers follow, and im left with a super powerful yet useless gaming machine. Along the lines of Jaguar or Sega CD. Scary...

    Best graphics aren't everything.

It looks like there's a PS2 and Xbox difference in quality with the lead reversed this time around. Some of Sony's best 1st gen offerings like Assassin's Creed or MGS 3 have been possible to port to the 360.

Without many homes using 1080p, that difference might not even be noticeable in the next 3-5 years...

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not going to put down 5-6 bones to prove it.

well first of all, I always thought that the graphical difference between the PS2 and Xbox1 was very noticeable, especially to those of us with HDTVs. especially since like 95+% of xbox games were at the minimum 480p and true widescreen...whereas with PS2 games it's nowhere near that percentage. every time there was a PS2 exclusive, I was always pissed at the fact it wasn't on the xbox

second, just because a PS3 game isn't running at 1080p (due to the user not having a 1080p HDTV, or just the fact that the specfic game itself doesn't support 1080p) doesn't mean it can't or won't look better than a xbox360 game. the power of the GPU can make a difference on visual quality regardless of the resolution you're running at. to take a PC analogy, it would be like comparing what a recent high-end and quality game would look like on a computer with a GeForce 7900 GTX, against a system with say a Radeon 9800pro (just picking any old but popular card). there would certainly be a noticeable graphical difference even with the two comps at the same resolution

however, it remains to be seen whether the PS3's GPU is really all that more powerful than the xbox360's

Don't underestimate the PS2. It had its moments with its exclusives because 3rd party ports were sometimes watered down to the least powerful console to speed up development times. In the end, they were king. Their ported version normally outsold the Xbox and Gamecube's because of their larger base. The DS is doing well with its cartoonish graphics....

If blu-ray's extra capacity for better textures and the PS3's power can be fully tapped for a noticable difference, then maybe customers will care. Right now, the 360 is putting up a good front on the looks department.

yes, this is all true. they were certainly king of the current-gen consoles...due to their *software library*. not graphics. I was only talking about graphics, that's all. you made it sound like in your previous post that you thought there wasn't much graphical difference between the PS2 and xbox1. I think there was a noticeable difference...at least on HDTVs. on standard def TVs, it's not as noticeable

yeah, I agree that there are quite a few xbox360 games that really look damn sweet on HDTVs right now. but the thing is, none of us knows what a *final retail* release PS3 game will look like at the moment. so I don't think it's fair whatsoever for anyone to say (not just you, I've noticed a lot of people say this for some reason) that xbox360 games look just as good as PS3 ones. alpha and beta level builds don't necessarily reflect the final look of games

now I'm not guaranteeing that retail PS3 games will all look better than the xbox360...I'm just saying it's wrong for people to make their final judgments right now, as it seems some have

when i had a xbox/ps2 and a sdtv there was a BIG BIG difference between the ps2 and xbox graphics on just a standard def TV. The ps2 graphics looked like crap and xbox graphics look alot sharper.
