I've got no sympathy for Sony. They over-reached with the PS3, too far ahead of the technology curve. In the end, the only serious upshot of the console is 1080p graphics, but what percentage of the market even has that? I do, but overall it's what, 10% tops? Same games, slightly more complex and richer, but you need to have dropped thousands on a TV and have almost another grand to drop on the console and a few games to use it.

Yes, Blu Ray is a nice perk, and it's a cheap & great Blu Ray player. But in the same vein, BR discs are only a small jump above upconverted DVDs. I enjoy them at home, but I wouldn't be inconsolable if the player broke and I had to go back to ucDVDs. With the movies still costing double as BR, especially.

An upgraded PS2 would have been fine as an answer to 360. But Sony overreached, and built a $800 machine for a market that doesn't want to pay any more than $300 for consoles. They gambled, they lost. Hope winning the BR vs HD format war was worth it. In about 1-2 more years the PS3 will finally be "on time" for the market (enough homes having HD sets, production costs lower, retail down to $350 or $300).

I'm not into gaming, I never open these threads so I'm not knowlegable. Did they even consider the fact that you need to upgrade the television.

This doesn't surprise me...I see sony recouping over a very long period of time, ala PS2, but just on the hardware...

Blu-Ray and software is where it is at...

that's very important. its like getting a nice graphics card with tons of ram with a EGA monitor.

also to fully enjoy your experience you need a decent sound system with decent speakers and have the whole thing calibrated correctly for the room's acoustics.

I don't even think that is very important, probably no more than watching 1080p movies vs upscaled DVDs.

A lot of developers aren't even putting out their games in HD (1280x720 or higher), but since some of these games are really impressive from a visuals standpoint, I don't think people really care.

I don't think they were really in the position to release an upgraded PS2. If they wanted to release in 2006, maybe, but I think they were rushed into doing that by quite a bit. Given PS2 sales and how prepared Sony was in launching the PS3, they may have been wanting to launch in 2007 or maybe even 2008 (probably with a staggered release as well).

I guess they had the chance to ditch the design, but that would have meant ditching some important things like Cell, Blu-ray, a standard HDD, etc. From a business standpoint, the choice might be obvious, but SCEI (at the time) was run by an engineer, so obviously Sony decided to keep the components they thought were important, even if it meant sacrificing the present (PS3) for the future (PS4 and possibly other devices).

Of course, I think they still expected things to go better than they have been.

A friend of mine works at Toys R Us, and he says another price drop for 360 is coming soon . He said the 20gb version will only be 249.00, and the Elite will be 399.00 . Now maybe I can upgrade to a HDMI Elite system .This might really cause Sony to lose a lot more money . My cousin has a PS3, one and he rarely plays it . He plays his son's Wii more than anything . Hes always wanting me to switch sysytems with him for a week, and I just politely say ...... NO !

After my 360 red circled on me, I got the replacement and sold the loudass f-er. I have to admit that I still think Bioshock is one of the coolest games ever, but after getting a PS3 and playing Drakes Fortune on it, as well as Assassin's Creed...plus having the Blu-Ray.....lets just say I'll never buy a Microsoft product again if I can help it.

I really think Sony 1st party stuff is better than Microsoft's. But to me Resistance competes with Halo or Gears, so maybe I am crazy. Its a complete turn of tables that Microsoft has had the stronger 3rd party support for a change.

The 1st party efforts between the two are pretty much the same IMO, although depending on your preferences, one might appeal more to you than the other. I think Sony definitely has the advantage in the long run though.

The 360 definitely has been benefiting from 3rd party support. Not sure how much it will matter moving forward since it seems like most notable 3rd party games are on both platforms. Seems like 80% or so of the games on both platforms will probably be the same (both have CoD, GTA, Resident Evil, BioShock, Fallout, Madden, etc.).
