Despite Sony's ridiculous statements, I still think they're going to beat the Xbox360 worldwide. When they gain momentum in Japan, the games will flow for their market.

However, Sony might be banking too much on their projections. Even if they lead, they need a very large lead to be successful to their shareholders.

I like how casual sports gamers who only played games like Madden or Live are now considered hardcore gamers.

Maybe at the end of this generation, there'll be so many Wii gamers who are accepted by the media and considered "hardcore" as well. :)

I think Nintendo's execs have admitted that they don't consider their system as a true competitor with the PS3 or 360. So they probably won't be offended if you consider it a toy. Anyways, a real video game console, that's not a toy, is for the mature adults, all grown up and stuff...yeah.

You sound like the type who heavily depends on graphics to judge a game, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Don't underestimate the Wii and how it opens up to people who haven't logged 20000 hours playing RPGs or still get chills with a headshot in FPSs.

Heck, I think the Wii lineup right now is gimmicky, but they've definitely added new content. Besides the graphics, the gameplay can be just the same as the 360 or PS3, but it's potential ceiling is much higher.

Nintendo is building a new demographic, and if it holds, quality and depth will follow.

its gonna be awhile before people care about bluray or hd dvd.
you know why? cause there are too many people without HDTV. some cheapskates need to get with the program so we can all benefit from more HD programing!

If you're referring to PSP games, yes that's very true.

totally laughable statement. so you don't like the been there done that feeling, but yet tout the 12 Final Fantasy games as epic and Halo 2 (AWESOME FPS BTW, one of my faves) which just about copies every aspect of Doom and Quake for the PC?

cmon man, plz don't play the "oh i am unbiased" bs, noone believes you when you make silly comments like this.

i have an HDTV and i don't care about bluray nor do I care about watching the same bad movies in high-def. Start releasing the five-star classics, then maybe it'll get my attention. Sorry, but I'll pass on The Fast and Furious...

    i guess im a cheapskate

It seems the Guardian was wondering the same thing. They did an interview with Ray Maguire, the Managing Director of Sony UK, and asked him why they weren't offering the 20GB model

Why does it mater? Ease of use and mass use. It is a step closer to fusing tv, internet and home. That will not happen with a standard remote. Someone stated here already that their wife uses the Wii weather channel every morning. People here have started threads here of how to get women interested in gaming. This is it. They wouldn't do that with a standard remote or controller. Yeah there have been remotes out that are similar, but millions of people didn't own them using the same operating system on their television. You don't think it is special that a person can check their email, surf the net, play games, check the weather, control household appliances with the same remote in a virtual 3D box while in the kitchen making a sandwich? I do. The Wii has mass appeal. I'm one of the dorks that are looking forward to the Wii painting games etc. I'm not that interested in the standard shooting games blah blah blah. I want something new and different and so do a lot of other people.

I think the "real diehards" are greatly overestimating their percentage of this consumer base. Most people aren't interested in logging 4 hrs a day into a Final Fantasy game. I'm not saying it's wrong to love doing so, but the Wii is capitalizing on what the masses are more likely to go for.

I've said all along that the PS3 is a superior product and I'll be buying one, but the demand simply isn't there like it is for the Wii, and that's price aside.

The Fast and the Furious is a Universal title, so it's only available on HD-DVD. :)

As far as the five-star classics, there are plenty of classic titles out now or coming in the next couple months:

HD-DVD: The Adventures of Robin Hood, Casablanca, The Deer Hunter, The Sting, Apollo 13, Seabiscuit, Traffic, Dazed and Confused, Field of Dreams, Casino, The Breakfast Club, Spartacus

Blu-ray: Memento, Chicago, Rocky, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut, The Silence of the Lambs, Dances With Wolves, Reservoir Dogs, The Usual Suspects, The Fly

Dual Format: Unforgiven, Full Metal Jacket, Million Dollar Baby, Blazing Saddles, GoodFellas, The Searchers, The Dirty Dozen, Reds, Superman: The Movie

That's not a bad list for two formats that are each less than a year old.

Personally, I think the lists suck. Who gives a **** about watching The Breakfast Club and Blazing Saddles in HD? To spend money on a movie that a lot of people probably already have or have seen a ton of times it has be something visually stunning. Most of those do not fit that category. I have 5 HD-DVD's and haven't bought anymore or a PS3 (for Blu-Ray) because there aren't any movies that I see that are worth the money.

I've netflixed a few as well and I didn't think that they were that much better than an upconverted dvd. Some on the other hand are REALLY nice.

some of them are cool just to show off. King Kong is sweet (picture/sound wise)
Batman and Training Day are good too.
Thinking of buying Casino. seen that?

It depends on what you mean by "visually stunning". Personally, I think Blazing Saddles looks incredible on HD-DVD. But if by "visually stunning", you mean it has to be demo material to show off either your TV or audio system, then obviously a 33 year-old comedy won't be at the top of your must buy list.

Me personally, the appeal of HD-DVD/Blu-ray is being able to see movies and TV shows, both old and new, with the best visual and audio quality possible. That's why some of my favorite purchases include Blazing Saddles, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Out of Sight, and Casablanca. I can always pop in Chronicles of Riddick or King Kong if I wanna show off my home theater.

This argument is r****ded. Hardcore gamers play PC games, not consoles. As far as I'm concerned, EVERY console is for casual gamers, including the all-powerful "hardcore" PS3. Get back to me when you've logged a 6-hour Molten Core run in WoW with 40 people all acting in unison to defeat a boss. $599 for a console? Puh-lease. Try $599 for just a video card.

    That might take a while...

I'm sure they want the PS3 to do well, but it also wouldn't take very many PS3s to be sold to help Sony out in a lot of their other areas (Blu-ray succeeding, Sony Pictures getting better sales, Sony HDTVs selling, Cell getting a big push as well as Linux to a degree, etc.). They might be assuming that this will happen though, and on top of that, want the PS3 to do very well (as with the previous PS consoles).

Yeah, hardcore isn't exactly the best word to describe what I meant as I was telling Rokkit.

If there are 2.5M Wii gamers waiting in line to get Wii Sports 2 when it comes out, then this would definitely apply to the Wii and its games I suppose.
