London Homesick Blues.... I think it is the band that Jerry Jeff Walker plays with.... Gary Somebody. The chorus: I wanna go home to The Armadillo Good country music from Amarillo and Abilene The prettiest places and the prettiest faces you've ever seen
"Hello Texas" - Jimmy Buffet (it sure is good to see you again) "The Long Run" - The Eagles (all the debutants in Houston, baby)
"I'm just another boy from Texas..." line in a Counting Crows song off of Hard Candy...can't remember the name of the song.
Flatlanders "Dallas" Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night? Well Dallas is a jewel, oh yeah, Dallas is a beautiful sight. And Dallas is a jungle but Dallas gives a beautiful light. Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night? Well, Dallas is a woman who will walk on you when you're down. But when you are up, she's the kind you want to take around. But Dallas ain't a woman to help you get your feet on the ground. Yes Dallas is a woman who will walk on you when you're down. Well, I came into Dallas with the bright lights on my mind, But I came into Dallas with a Dollar and a dime. Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eye A steel and concrete soul with a warm hearted love disguise A rich man who tends to believe in his own lies Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eyes. Any country music fans without that Flatlanders album (Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, et al.), you just have to find it. Trust me.
"Leavin' Texas, fourth day of July. Sun so hot, clouds so low, the eagles fill the skies." "Jack Straw"- Grateful Dead
Corpus Christi Bay- robert earl keen Texas Skies- Freddy Jones Band Amarillo by Morning-George Strait
Dudes... WASP...Blind in Texas White lightning moonshine, tastes like fire I drank for free till I couldn't see I fell on the floor, what I said is I'm blind in Texas, the lone star is hot tonight I'm blind in Texas, the cowboys have taken my eyes I drank Dallas whiskey and lost my mind Had high-balls in Houston, three for a dime Everything starts to spin, loaded on gin I fell out the door, what I said is I'm blind in Texas, the lone star is hot tonight I'm blind in Texas, the cowboys have taken my eyes San Antonio and the West Texas town El Paso Corpus Christi and Waco, the Yellow Rose is wild Hey dude, let's party Raisin hell in Austin just after sundown When the hoose-gow police decided to come round- they said "Boy what's the matter with you, what you trying to do?" I looked at the man and I said I'm blind in Texas, the lone star is hot tonight I'm blind in Texas, I'm blind
Little Feat - Texas Twister Also 'Rock and Roll Doctor' has a line that goes "from Nacogdoches down to New Olreans". Back in the 70's Feat had a cult like following at SFA. Asleep at the Wheel - Waltz across Texas (altough it was originally and Earnest Tubb song I think) The Freddy Jones Band - Texas Skies (sounds like a lost Allman Brothers cut) Does Joe Tex count? his version of 'Show Me' is and all-timer.
Houston (going back to) by Dean Martin The original title of Midnight train to Georgia was actually called Midnight plain to Houston. Bonnie Raitt mentions A Summer night in Texas when it's too hot and wet to sleep in her song Feeling of Falling. And probably the most famous dance , The Tighten Up by Archie Bell and the Drells from Houston,Texas who not only sing but can dance as well as they want! Talking Heads have heard about Houston heard about Detroit heard about Pittsburgh PA in Life During Wartime. Fastball had a song about Clearwater, Texas in one of their albums. I think the Ghetto Bys mention Houston in My minds playing tricks on me. And on a final note some of the Famous Houston area born musicians no longer with us Barry White Johnny "Guitar" Watson Selena
A friend sent it to me as well. It was from the Van Halen site. I don't know what the Van Halen site is and I'm too lazy to look it up.
oops I almost forgot The Band's song Lookout Cleveland which mentions Houston in the second verse. It made me wonder if they were really singing about Cleveland, Texas which is just north of Houston. And I also Forgot to mention Rodney Crowell's album The Houston Kid. The first song on the album is Telephone Road, not that far from the U of H on the south side.
