The dad is a big proponent of conceal and carry so he should've already been well versed in firearm safety and responsibility but even with that this kid still took his gun and shot his mom. I don't know if that was a that they didn't secure the weapon or whether the kid was just determined enough to be able to get past the security but from the information given there were warning signs about this kid. As with the case with Adam Lanza no amount of fire arms safety training is going to over come mental illness. According to the original article it sounds like this kid had issues and shouldn't have had a gun or even access to one.

I played violent games like the original Fallout where you can try and blow away a specific piece of torso. Sooo much fun... but I wasn't crazy and I've never had problems with self control. Video games does nothing, bad parenting does.

I bought my son a .22 with his name on it when he was born.

Hope that doesn't turn around to bite me in the ass 13 years from now.

Also, clearly the idea to rape his mother came from common video game trash talk. What else could it be?

I don't understand anyone who thinks guns OR video games OR bad parenting was the sole cause of this.

You may have an agenda and feel the need to attack someone on the opposite side of whatever issue you believe in, but the fact of the matter is that all three of those things contributed to this crime.

Your kid threatens to kill his mother? Take away his gun.

Your kid, after threatening to kill his mother, spends all day killing person after person in a realistic, digital setting? Take away his video game.

He might still try to rape you, but at least he won't have a gun.

I work at Gamestop, and they take the ESRB seriously. One of the stores in our region got secret shopped about a month ago. They sent a young kid in to buy a mature-rated game, he bought it with no problem. The person who sold it to him and the store manager both lost their jobs.

Video games do play a part, specifically Call of Duty. If your kid is playing Halo or Mass Effect, big deal. I doubt he's going to get his hands on alien technology any time soon.

But COD prides itself on being realistic. It's supposed to show you what war is really like, and the average consensus among the people that get addicted to it is that war is awesome.

I've run into 13 year olds that know more about guns than I ever will, and it's because COD taught them. No civilian will ever need the weapons in that game, but when you spend hours every night using them, the line between the gun as a tool, the gun as a weapon, and the gun as entertainment becomes blurred.

But enough about video games. The parents really should have recognized that their kid might need help, and he definitely should not have had access to a firearm.

Rip into each other all you want, just understand that no side is completely right on this one.

It's just a sad thing really. When I was 13 the video games that I grew up playing were bad ass but not to a boiling point where I would shoot my mother in rage.. Damn I must be missing out, Time to pre-order the newest COD game.

I know when I hear that stuff when gaming, it takes me to dark places. Or I just mute everyone that isn't my friend.

Parents can disable the ability to play mature games, and they can not buy them in the first place. My first shooter was contra. His first shooter was probably modern warfare 2.
