Barkley didnt even play that last year of his contract. He was bought out and by his own admission gladly took it cuz it was the most he ever made in a single season. Not like Barkley didnt have endorsements himself. He probably made more than Stockton if you include endorsements but still 30 and 40 million less than what he could have gotten for his nba salary is still a huge amount.
I saw that movie 21 based on the story of Jeff Ma, the card counter. he said he was playing with NBA players all the time (said it on nba radio). just go to vegas, you'll see a bunch of nba players gambling. you know where all that Rockets money Cato got paid with went? he was in my cab line at the Wynn.
Didn't Barley take the veterans minimum (or close to it) the year Pippen was here so we'd have the cap space? Barkely sacrificed a few million there trying to win that elusive championship.
yes, and pippen got 11 mill that year, thanks to chuck. then we traded his max contract to the blazers. and they won like 3 championships... NOT!!
Mo Taylor made $5million more off of that 6 year deal Rudy gave him than Charles Barkley made in his entire career. LOL.
Here's the thing about Barkley: The man will never be broke. He could go gamble his entire fortune away tomorrow (when he retired from the NBA, he claimed to have saved $30M in the bank) and still live a lavish lifestyle. His persona, charisma, and humor will always ensure that he's in demand as a spokesperson, speaker, and television analyst. He's probably one of the top paid TV analysts in any sport. I'd guess that he's easily the highest paid NBA commentator right now. I know people on here love to hate on the Chuckster because he never shows the Rockets a lot of love on TV, but he alway sacrificed for the team when he was in Houston. When is the last time you've heard of a guy taking less money, not to mention, that much less money as Barkley did when we signed Pip? To my knowledge, no player has ever willingly taken that much of a paycut. Sure, he got rewarded the next year, but there was NO guarantee of that happening. What if his knee injury would have occurred the season he made $1M? Charles Barkley is a legend that gets a bum rap for his weight, but you can't question his desire to win once he stepped on the court.
just an fyi shaq has made 231 mil in his career. Shaq has made far more money than any one else ever has salary wise.
I was at the Wynn spa a couple summers ago after getting a massage, and Pippen walked by me in the lounge acting like a real ***. Some people said hello to him and I just sat there silently cursing his soul. If he's broke I'm happy to hear it.
The thing about Charles was that he signed his contracts at the wrong time. He missed out on the phase when salaries started going berserk. The reason Hakeem made a lot more money was because his early 90s contract ran out when he was still near his prime. So he re-upped for big money. Charles' contract ended when he was clearly in his decline. Part of it has to do with his decline phase being sooner than Stockton/Jordan/Hakeem though. It wasn't as if Barkley "wasn't about the money", just that he was screwed by being born too early. Well that and being really fat and had injury problems late in his career.
On what site would someone argue that Barkley is a better player than Olajuwon? What would that argument be based on? Barkley * 1x NBA MVP (1993) * 5x All-NBA First Team Selection (1988-1991, 1993) * 5x All-NBA Second Team Selection (1986-1987, 1992, 1994-1995) * 1x All-NBA Third Team (1996) * 1985 NBA All-Rookie Team * 11x All-Star (1987-1997) * 1x NBA All-Star Game MVP (1991) * NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team Olajuwon * 2x NBA Champion (1994, 1995) * 1x NBA MVP (1994) * 2x Finals MVP (1994-1995) * 2x NBA Defensive Player of the Year (1993-1994) * 6x All-NBA First Team Selection (1987-1989, 1993-1994, 1997) * 3x All-NBA Second Team Selection (1986, 1990, 1996) * 3x All-NBA Third Team Selection (1991, 1995, 1999) * 5x NBA All-Defensive First Team Selection (1987-1988, 1990, 1993-1994) * 4x NBA All-Defensive Second Team Selection (1985, 1991, 1996-1997) * 1985 NBA All-Rookie Team * 12x All-Star (1985-1990, 1992-1997) * NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team
Happens in every league, salaries (remember endorsements are huge also) go up and up but that doesn't mean your any better than the guy before you. I would look at Tim Duncan's number's he's probably barely maxed out. These guys make enough money, it's whether they can spend wisely and not waste it all...
33 MILLION A YEAR Geez I believe anyone can play better than the majestic for 33 Mil $ ! This must be the allhigh salary from only a team in american sports history , am I wrong ?
If you guys want to see r****ded you should go take a look at what Alex Rodriguez will make over the course of his career.
All this tells me is that the NFL needs a rookie pool salary to stop the David Carr's, Ryan Leafs, and JaMarcus Russells of the world from getting more money than estabilished players.
this is why i cringe when landry/landry agent was saying he was short change, when the contract offer is below 1m.
