I agree with most of what you said, but I don't think his presidency was about grifting. Due to his malignant narcissism, he thinks that he is the smartest, most capable guy in the room at all times. I think that he truly believes he was a good president and the election was stolen from him.

The grifting was a side hustle because that is what he does. If he was truly smart, he would have never become president because it will cost him millions of dollars and a seat at any table that doesn't have his name on it.

In a functioning society, an elitist narcissistic billionaire getting slapped back down to earth should be a moral lesson in hubris. Unfortunately for half the country he is seen as a culture war martyr.

Yes, I think he did both. I don't think his goal was make money off the presidency. I think he was convinced to run by people like Bannon and Stone who played off his narcissism and saw him as a useful idiot.
The Republican platform under Trump is a reflection of his personality. He had no plan other than to have as many people as possible worship him. Any money he could grift was secondary. If you look at his actions through the lens of his narcissism everything comes into focus. He is a very simple man.

The issues are tribalism and confirmation bias. Republicans supported trump, elected him. Tribalism prevents them from addressing Trumps failings, the insurrection, mishandling of covid, and accepting the 2020 election loss because well, YOU CANT LET THE OTHER TRIBE BE RIGHT OR WIN!!! And then confirmation bias limits the information they are willing to consume or even consider.

lastly, republicans seem of the mindset that they would gladly burn down democracy if that’s the only means of Making America Great AgIn. After all, if the Dems get and keep control, the country is going to **** anyway, right? So burn it down if we have to, we have nothing to lose. If we succeed, we win.
