We are the only westernized country without a national healthcare program...how sad is that?

The richest country in the world.....

I guess we go with the "if it doesn't kill ya, it will only make ya stronger" arguement.

    Per Supermac 34--

"An extra 16% of my taxes would be 10 times at least the amount I pay for healthcare every year."

Good for you man. You know those health care costs are not fixed, so do not grow another day older or get sick.

My health insurance for myself, wife and wson costs $ 1,498.38 per month, and I expect a rate increase in January. I have paid these rates for 3 years now - call it 1500 per month, 18000 per year, and 54000 in 3 years. Until this last month we never had a claim-other than my wife's meds.

This last month my wife had an endoscopy and upper Gastro intestinal exam with the camera. She was an out patient and was at the hospital for 3 hours total- 1 hour for the procedure.

The first bill from the hospital is $ 17,000, later the Dr bill and lab will come. The Humana insurance co. will pay 80% after I pay the $ 2500 deductible.

I am so lucky to have insurance. I truly am grateful for the coverage.

The hospital is hosing the insurance company and the insurance company is hosing me.

    This is sooo wrong.

I am all free market, but thisis obscene. I work in a high risk industry - construction. Our net profit is 14% if everyting goes perfect. The risk is high.

I am all for everyone making money, but would 40% net profit be enough for the hospital? I do not want to see regulation, because it will keep good people out of health care....

Even pushing the 'ethical' question aside, it makes economic sense. How many of our cultural icons -- GM, Ford, amongst others -- will have to go under or face the threat of going under because they are at a HUGE competitive disadvantage when compared to their foreign rivals? How many small businesses struggle just to offer minimal coverage to their employees?

    It makes economic sense...
