    Back to the topic.

Yao often stole his Mom's money to play E-games when he was young.

in 1998,Yao and his teammate Liu Wei who will join in Kings' preseaon game went to USA for the first time, they just brought 200 bucks, but they gotta stay there for 2 months.so they almost became beggers. In the end, they borrowed 100 bucks from a american coach to survive.

In AAU summer league, after he played against tyson chandler,Yao for the time believe he could definitely play in NBA.

Yao began learning English since 12,the first sentence he learned was"I want some water".though he had no ideas which word means "water",he was told he could get water if he said this.

Rockets' GM CD and coach rudy T went to play Golf in 1990,CD was attacked by the lighting and scarcely became blind, even now he could not see things clearly.Rudy T was lucky enough to be intact.

the president of Chinese Bball association even charged 2/3 of Yao's income at first.(now half )

Yao became to love his current gf since 17.

B4 he suffered several serious injuries in his heels he could look at the hoop from above when he dunked.(?? 305+15-226=94cm,he could jump that high?)

Yao sent Big Diesel a greeting card to his home in Florida in Christmas,it says"thanks for the encouragement, you'r the only one I look up to! be like shaq!" Sha's Daddy got the card and drove to the stadium at once before the first Shaq-Yao game started.Shaq didn't believe it then ran to Yao to make sure when the players were practicing.

but Yao inviting Shaq to dinner was not true.. it was Phil Jackson idea to make Shaq look good by telling it to the media.

the first time Yao talked with SF3:
    SF3£ºDo you have a girlfriend??
    Yao: Yes, I have
SF3: watch out, they all want your money

Excellent idea bob. We need more tidbits from Yao's book and less recriminations between those that have underscores in their screen names and those that don't. :p

Okay can we get a clarification on this. Is this half of his first contract with the Rockets. If so then Yao's obligation to the CBA was nothing more than your run of the mill buyout for foreign athletes. Albeit a pretty damn hefty buyout at $9 mill. On the other hand if it also includes future salaries and endorsements. . . .

    94cm=37 inches?

Motherf****** Sh**. Yao with a 37 inch vertical. He would have been a slightly taller Sampson with a monster base. Imagine a beast like that roaming around in the paint. Let's see. Yao was probably 7'4" or 7'5" at that time. Let's say that his eyes are about 3" to 4" from the top of his head. So eye level would be about 7'1". If he's looking down at the rim then his eyes are up at about the 10'2" level.

    10'2" - 7'1" = 3'1" = 37 inches.

I guess you're right. If Yao truly could jump and look down at the rim, then his vertical was about 37 inches, give or take an inch.

    Jesus :shakes head:

    Sigh. :l

Okay, I'm going to stop thinking about this already.

Why are American born Chinese so ******* sensitive?? Every little thing insults them. Thank god tougher Chinese like Yao Ming are coming from mainland China.

Call me an Oriental or a Chinaman anytime. I don't care. How can you be insulted by a hillbilly or redneck anyways?? I can't wait until I can use these words again myself. My mom and dad use the word Oriental all the time. They have no idea what the hell an "Asian" is. I tell them its a word used by bleeding heart white liberals, Labor, Democrats, etc.

Pfft. We're SO past that discussion. 37 INCH VERTICAL!!!

Oh wait. I guess we're past that too. :(

And mainland chinese people aren't "tougher". They just come from a homogenous society that doesn't have to deal with a lot of this racial stuff. It's a different situation. Case in point: I'm not offended by the stuff people from Beijing say about the people in Shanghai. The cheap and greedy comments wash right off my back. So by your way of thinking, maybe it's the Chinese Americans that are "tougher" than the Mainlanders.

    So nayh
    !

Yao'd better let that dream go. I've jumped out of an airplane 121 times (mostly military jumps with the crappy, "fall like you have lead boots on" T10-Bravo chute) and I would never, ever bungie jump. It's insanely dangerous, and your safety is in the hands of some sweaty, exhausted, minimum-wage-making twenty year old.

Yao should stick to the safer stuff ... like juggling chainsaws or driving on the West Loop.

    ;)

Especially since most people tend to forget that India and Pakistan are a part of Asia.. so I dont really think that Asian is the proper word to use since it is soooo broad. I dont see why yellow cant be used.. i am indian and pakistani and we are generalized as indian usually but i really dont care because people dont know any better, and there is no way knowing. I dont mind being called brown! haha.. brownie is also nice. haha.. but yah.. i think it should be yellow or oriental! i dont see oriental as being racist...

$25 is a little steep for this book.

anyway, back to the side issue of this thread :p

if people from india are to be called brown, then what do you call the millions of people from india that look "chinese", but are indian by nationality?

    like this guy:

    bhaichung bhutia (indian soccer player)

    Here's some more bits...

-He respect the American fans more then the Chinese, b/c the Americans don't harass him as much and he said they would listen to him if he said he was "in a hurry or wait until I'm done eating to sign autograhes."

-He always wanted to be famous and wants attention since he was a kid, but not for a reason b/c he was tall but b/c he's in a pupular profession(basketball:) )

-DOn't mind that Amare gets ROY awards b/c he beats Amare in coach and management voting which is more important.

-His mother is the aggressor while his father is more soft when it comes to basketball.

-His parents never wanted him to become a professional basketball player, rather they only wanted him to play so he could be accepted at a better school for education....but as it turn out in his first year for the national team , he realize his skill is good enough to be at a higher level profession.

We have a lot of those types of people in my country as well. Much like the soccer player Azizi. (iran by the way)

They are basically found in the north of middle eastern countries dating back to when the mongolians attacked the upper parts of the middle east and basically took over those areas and started breeding lol.....so you will find them in different areas of the middle east.

I just saw on my ESPN Insider account that the
September 27 issue of ESPN the Magazine will have an excerpt from Yao's book .

So check that out, more stuff from the book without actually buying the book!

I'm out of town this weekend, but I'll be reading the book.

I'll post any other cool info from the book when I get back!!

    :D :D
