Some Prospects Comparisons:

G GS MPG FGM-FGA FG% 3’s 3 Avg FTM-A FT% OFF DEF TOT AG SPG BPG TO PF PPG

Jahidi White $4.4M (2001-02), $4.9M(2002-03) $5.4M (2003-04) $5.9M (2004-05)
68 56 23.7 203-408 .498 0-1 .000 177-312 .567 2.60 5.00 7.70 .3 .47 1.63 2.00 3.10 8.6

Othella Harrington $2.48M (2001-02), $2.7M(2002-03). $2.9M(2003-04), $3.1M(2004-05)
44 40 28.8 180-386 .463 0-3 .000 120-154 .779 2.30 4.30 6.60 .8 .43 .59 2.36 3.10 10.9
30 5 18.3 67-121 .554 0-0 .000 51-70 .729 1.20 2.10 3.30 .7 .50 .63 1.37 3.40 6.2

Jelani McCoy FreeAgent (Last Year $1.13M in a one year contract)
70 44 16.3 138-264 .523 0-0 .000 41-93 .441 1.30 2.30 3.60 .8 .26 .70 1.07 2.00 4.5

[ My case FOR O.Harrington:
1. outscored both in 44 games with Grizz, straight up all games (68,73,70 resp) still managed an average of 8.5 PPG in 23.6 average minutes on a lesser role in NY.
2. better FT thrower.
3. better rebounder than McCoy, arguably equal to or slightly less than White in rebounds.
4. better blocker than McCoy, worse blocker than White.
5. suffers with slightly higher turnover rate than White, but less turnovers than McCoy.

All three of these guys are sub 6'11". All three have shown some promise. But, I guess what I am saying is, giving by druthers of these three prospects .... I would take O in a heart beat. Now whether he would be available is another thing. VanGundy likes his game, attitude and preparation in NY. Jahidi White is apparently on the block and Jaleni McCoy is an unrestricted Free Agent.

This looked a lot prettier and easier to read before I posted it .... sorry.

Can I assume that your omission of Marc Jackson means that he is no longer available?

As for Othella, I would love to see him back. I think his hustle in practice alone, could do wonders for our other big men.

Though he's pricier, I'd take Jahidi, for the simple fact that he outweighs Othella by 55 lbs. (290-235) at the same height and is just the kind of semi-athletic bruiser the rockets need in the middle.

I would like to see Othella the Fella back in pinstripes. Great energy burst for the second unit.

I'd forgotten what an incredibly low-ball contract that Othella signed for, especially in this day and age. His agent should be shot. I'd love to see him back with the Rockets, but he's too small to fill our needs for a starting center.

On Jackson:

No. Just that he has made it clear that he wants a fat money contract, long years and to be pursued(Geesh, sounds like my ex-wife). I guess I get the feeling more and more out of Greenway Plaza this week that they are fed up, tired over this last ordeal, and will still play hardball with some players .... but will NOT look at long term deals (>4years) from an outsider unless it is a premium player.

We are also getting ready to lose some of our available money alternatives, and it is looking less and less like Jackson, LaFrentz(at least for this year) and more and more like a lowballer or a short timer fill-in (see above).

I will say I have heard some buzzing over a couple of surprises (Bigger names) being talked to, but cannot confirm any specifics. I am assuming these are CD's regular "search and feel out" -type of adventures ... but they were interesting.

The talk of Cato to Chicago ( and a couple of other venue spotlights) are still out there, but a pretty good source says the Rockets have all but shelved most of the offers, as the reponses are waning and in one case far too expensive for us.

Any news on the possibility of signing Marc Jackson? Will we still be able to afford him after siging Mo, SA and Mooch?

Never mind...I must have been 3 seconds too late with that question. Thanks

oeilpere-Is getting further under the cap for next year a big priority for the Wizards, and how much would they like the PR of "The Wizard" being a Wizard? ;)

The Rockets need a guy like Jahidi White. He provides the defense, rebounding, and bulk in the front court that would fit VERY well as a backup, and as a starter, we could do worse.

I think I recall some ties between Jahidi and Steve (other than Steve posterizing him mid-game), like some summer league games perhaps?

Edit: http://www.clutchcity.net/news.cfm?NewsID=373

Jahidi played with Steve, Cuttino, and Mooch in one of last year's summer league games.

Getting Othella back makes no sense. Why would we want him back if we already have 3 PF? I don't think he can play C so why even discuss it as an option.

I've always kind of liked Jahidi...I'd love to have him on our team. Eventhough he's only 6'9, he actually can block some shots.

I'll add some stats as well comparing White and Marc Jackson per 48 minute numbers since that's what some of the Marc Jackson fans like to point to sometimes...

Jahidi White (per 48 min)
Points - 17.4
Rebounds - 15.5 (5.3 off)
Blocks - 3.34
Turnovers - 4.1

Marc Jackson (per 48 min)
Points - 21.5
Rebounds - 12.3 (4.1 off)
Blocks - .92
Turnovers - 3.2

Basically White's cheaper and provides more defense and rebounding than Marc Jackson. Jackson can shoot, but there's only one ball to go around and our C shouldn't be touching the ball too much when we've got Mo, Cuttino, and Steve (and hopefully Griffin) getting their touches.

OP,
Are you implying that the Rockets are having talks with the Wiz for White? If so, what kind of players are the Wiz looking for?

Nike said it, Jahidi is the big man we need in the middle of our zone. Dude is an intimidating presence.

Othella would be nice at that price, but he isn't the inside presence guy we need.

Maybe crispee could table those stats you posted and make them more presentable;)

Othella's a hustling player w/ decent offense who comes cheap. But KT (IMHO) is better and O is not the smartest player either. Also, he's like a black hole once he gets the ball inside - remember Chuck taunting him w/ Gary Payton...."Hey O, give up the ball...you can do it!! I brought the Fun Police for you!!!"

I'm all for Jahidi in PJ's.

Jahidi White is a viable option, if Jordan will take The Wiz and/or the Toronto draft pick (which is valuable, but we seem OK without it. In fact, we can maybe facilitate trades using some of our spare parts.

I wouldn't cry if we got Othella my fella. Great rebounder. Great work ethic. Lives in Houston. But how to get him? KT? Collier? Both? One of 'em plus the Toronto pick?

Im all for getting Othella back on the team. He has very good posting abilities.

Mo being backed up by Othella is much better than Kenny.

Othella is older and knows how the rockets do it here. Jahidi White would also be perfect. Hes a monster.

Backwoods boy:

1. O has spunk, drive, a great work ethic, and would be well appreciated by the staff on a team that had a lackluster effort in that departmebnt from some at that same spot.

2. Although he will never be a star in this league, he makes players around him a little better wityh his unselfish floor work.

3. He has serviceable numbers and at 6'10" has played in both the West and the Eastern conferences at the Five Spot.

4. He knows the personnel, and although he has had some harsh words for the team in the past, including RT, he and RT have since spoken and smiled about the previous s**t.

5. He lives partime in Houston.

6. The PF spot is presently held by: MoTay(fuilltime), KT (long-partime), Griffin(short-parttime). He would be considered a five spot, but your point is well taken. Ideally he would be ear-marked for the 4-5 split. Unfortunately we are one five too short, and one four too long.

7. For comparison purposes he is as qualified as White,Jackson,McCoy, etc ..... maybe even LaFrentz if you want to use the strict rule of 4 or 5.

Well, MJ has decided he wants to slowly get his team on track. He has to find several ways to do that. 1. Unload heavy contracts. 2. Get the franchise off and running. 3. Designing a team depth chart that will offer ample time for Kwame Brown.

Unloading one of these guys seems like logical move from that perspective, especially if he loses a 2-3 year contract with White. frees some time and instills some aggressive offense.

Van GUndy has a different problem. He does not have enough to do much improving this year. A Collier and pick would be very attractive for Othella, I would think.

Just to keep all of this in perspective: I started this thread to point out that the Rockets going after a role player (especially if it looks more and more like we will have to put Cato at the top of the Depth Chart at the five) ..... is a more prudent move maybe, then keeping Cato and loading up on another pricey($5M) center in a long tern contract.

A. The upside is Catio has a resurgence and pays his way into a viable commodity or useful team player. And we don't need a pricey alternative, just a role player with some good game.
B. The downside Cato doesn't do anything more than we expected of him .... and we are stuck with him as ever, but have a viable role player and no big pricey contract.
C. The middle of the road prudent move .... assume Cato will do something, not spectatcular mind you, but just enough to get us 20 minutes a game of defense. We can have two role players at the five to take the rest of the minutes, and improve our matchups, or we can sign Jackson for $4.5M for five years and hope he has the guts to stick in 20-28 minutes.

Anyway you look at it ..... the role player with average ups and minimal downs(except height.maybe) .... guys who have a balanaced Def-Off, and low price tag .... guys like the ones we have mentioned(White,Othella,McCoy) ...they may be the better option.

My rationale:

And, when it comes to them, I feel a sligthly more comfortable with O than the others .... not much more, but enough to sway me.

Let's connect two of the dots in this thread: Harrington's lowball contract and his (allegedly expired) ire at Rudy. I would assume there's a direct connection: O signed the lowball contract because he wanted to be in Houston. We then took advantage of that contract by packaging him in the Francis trade. Basically, albeit legally, we screwed him.

You can be sure he'll never sign with the Rockets again for anything less than top dollar. So my question is: How soon can he dump that contract and go on the market for another? And do we want him on those (temporary filler only) terms?

I think I would take Othella. I actually saw him this weekend at the Galleria. What a coincidence? Then again, I run into him every summer but normally at the range.
