You forgot to include something here that is key- the contract of Tyrus Thomas. In 2014/15 the Rockets would have had at least 40Mil wrapped up in just the salaries of Lin, Asik, and Thomas alone. Thats a huge hit to their cap flexibility moving forward. Even if MKG is destined to be a superstar, I cant say that this trade would have made the Rockets that much closer to being a true contender because it would have seriously hampered their ability to pursue a secondary star.
I'm not so sure. We supposedly weren't willing to offer all our rookies to Orlando for Howard, so why would we be willing to send them all to another team for a pick to give to Orlando? It might be just a timing issue because Orlando waited too long, but it could also be that Morey put a higher priority on the #2 than he did on Howard. That is a lot for MKG, but I'd be tempted to do it. Small differences in talent result in big differences in results in the NBA.
Looks like it. Given the fact that the Rockets weren't able to make the Howard trade happen on draft night and the Howard/Bynum deal never came to fruition, they probably made the right move to hold onto Lowry till afterwards when they can get the pick that they got instead in next years draft.
I don't think we would have drafted MKG. My guess is we trade for #2, trade down to 3 and pick up a late pick, and then grab Robinson with the #3.
It's MKG according to Feign's report, also Doc Rocket's prediction is correct when he implied MKG is the target.
I wonder if step 2 would've been Dwight/Bynum, or rebuilding around MKG. also, re #8 pick - I'd think the Toronto deal would've been Lowry+#18 --> #8, judging by these trades. Not to mention, #8 in a current draft (that's also considered very deep) has to be more valuable than a future protected lotto pick.
I'm glad it didn't go through, I never really liked Robinson. I think Terrence Jones and Royce White, both have equal or greater potential then Thomas Robinson.
Don't think the difference between #8 and #12 was that much so would be okay if Morey didn't offer Lowry for 8th since we got more value now. The only maybe is do you consider Ross, Drummond, Leonard or Rivers higher than Lamb? I like Ross better as an all round player but the rest not so much, Drummond was worth the shot maybe. Glad we didn't pull off that trade with the Cats, I'm not that high on MKG based on the games I've seen from Kentucky.
Forgot about Thomas. Lin and Asik only count ~8.4 mil each against the cap. With Thomas, they would be 26.8 million against the cap that year. Still a big hit to flexibility. Still a very interesting trade.
http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterockets/2012/06/rookies-set-out-to-prove-rockets-didnt-need-trade/ Roughly two hours before the draft began, most talks had fallen through and left few chances to move up. But there was still a chance the Rockets could have worked a deal with the Kings had the draft gone differently. That ended when the Bobcats chose Michael Kidd-Gilchrist with the second pick, assuring the Kings would get a player (Thomas Robinson) they wanted at that spot. The Rockets would have taken Kidd-Gilchrist had he slid to fifth. “It seemed close,” Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said of his efforts to move up. “One of them came down to, if there was a guy there they didn’t want (that) we wanted, they would be open to making a move. That was an on-the-clock thing that fell apart.”
i like trob, but i think we got a steal in jones. i know people have been talking about low moter issue, but i say thats because he wasnt being utilized fully. look at bynum, he has moter issue, but when kobe was out, he was a beast because he doesnt have to stand around anymore. talent is there, just have to utilize it
2014/15 Salaries Lin - $14,898, 938 Asik- $14,898,938 Thomas- $9,388,430 = $39,186,306 in salaries Come to find out though that the Lin & Asik salaries would have only count 8.3mil I think against the cap due to the structure of the contracts and the Arenas rule that final year. So roughly 25Mil in salary cap tied up in three players, but still a sizeable amount for 3 players.
Not really. 16mil for your starting center and your starting point guard is pretty decent. Knicks and Nets both have 60mil each tied up in 3 players that same year.
How many of those players on the Knicks and Nets are all-stars? How many of the Rockets players are all-stars? Look, I get it. Taking on Tyrus Thomas' contract isnt "that bad" with what we can project right now, but in two season you just dont know what your salary cap situation is going to look like, and Thomas' salary could be a cap killer in a few different situations. Yes, I probably still would have done the deal if I scouted MKG enough to know if he truely is a future all-star in the NBA. Given who the Rockets have targeted in past drafts(Rubio, Cousins, Valanciunas) Id say they must know something about him that I do not see with my limited viewing.
Morey probably wasn't taking MKG. I have a feeling he wanted Drummond or (more likely)wanted to send the number 2 pick for Howard. I'll dig around, but in a random trade thread I had something similar with us getting Thomas and Dwight, Charlotte getting our picks and some other guy, and Orlando getting the number two pick.
