I don't know VA that well. But I know what I saw on the floor last year. I'm going to guesstimate we lost around 10 games last season because we could not play Omer Asik all 48 minutes. As soon as Asik came out for a break the opponent went on wild runs against us constantly. Now we've got Omer Asik coming off the bench and a superior player to him starting the game with a year of experience for Harden and Parsons. As long as we're healthy (probably won't be since we were last year) this team should push 60.

Actually, he's a basketball executive right now that has been invited to be on a panel at every MIT Sports Analytics Conference. PER is limited as it doesn't do a good job rating a player's defense and players with extreme high and low usage rates.

There is a lot of better data available today that Hollinger didn't have when he developed PER. I wonder if he ever hopes he could distance himself from PER. PER does a decent job for most players using only box score stats, but is limited by box score production.

Not sure why this thread has such a low rating, but I do find this pretty interesting.

I would be interested to see what exactly goes in this rating.

-Also, I wonder if the values are scewed in different positions, such as playing out of position, or the value coming off the bench as opposed to starting & player 30+ min a game.

Obviously Asik's impact will not be as high coming off the bench or playing out of position so Im not ready to claim that this is an entirely accurate assesment right now because of the Asik situation.

However, I do think that, as others noted, Howards VA should have been lower than what you would normally see in a full season due to playing through injury, and Id expect Lin's VA to go up significantly in year 2 of being a starter.

    .....................

Also another thing I would like to see if where the Rockets stand in their total VA with Asik coming off the bench & someone like Jones starting, vs. removing Asik from the lineup altogether (assuming a trade) & plugging in the league average VA for a starting PF.

hi dobro - I will need more specific information i.e. the specific players for the team you are interested before I can try and find their Value-add values.

If you have something on your mind just state the players for the team you are interested in and we will try and see if we can get somewhere...
