Allan HOUSTON? He doesn't play great defense, doesn't rebound that much, doesn't drive that well (compared to the others we're talking about), doesn't wrack up as many assists, and doesn't score as much... but he's better than these people? What the heck? Houston's a great jump shooter.... but I can think of a BETTER person even for THAT-Ray Allen.

Both Bryant and Jones are better than Houston in virtually every phase of the game...

...as for him being a franchise player... plug him in Philadelphia in place of Iverson, and I REALLY doubt that team even makes the playoffs. Houston can't create enough.

The top SGs go in this order:
    1. Kobe

    3. Iverson
    4. Eddie

and for those of you who like to throw Vince in the mix:

    5. Vince

    There he is!

The thing that sets Kobe apart from the rest of these players is that he plays excellent offense AND defense and is the second option on his team. Not only is he the second option, he is second to THE most dominating player in the league. If the Lakers were to trade Kobe for any of the above mentoned players, he would lead the NBA in scoring.....PERIOD.

While it pains me to say so,I think Kobe is the best SG in the league.Furthermore,I'd take Finley over Iverson,Jones,Houston etc.
IMO,in 2-3 years,Larry Hughes will be as good,if not better than Kobe.

Larry Hughes has talent, but I can't think of one single aspect of his game that is or will be as good as Kobe. He is almost as tall, almost as quick, almost has the hops, and almost has the body control of Kobe. Don't get me wrong, Larry Hughes excells in these categories for a 2 guard--but even his strengths are just similar though perhaps slightly less than Kobes. Not that Kobe is an elite shooter, but Kobe is a much better shooter, defender, ballhandler, and has a much great understanding of the game. In these areas (Hughes's weakeness) that really do and will continue to seperate them. If Hughes becomes as good as say Latrell Sprewell (not a bad player at all) I would say Golden State would be happy with him.

Here are my top5 current SGs
    Kobe
    Iverson
Carter (as much of a 2 as Finley is)
    Finley
Allen (he is better than Houston or Jones)

Jalen Rose (this guy is pretty good), Houston or Jones would probably be the next best (let's see what Stack does w/o Hill), I guess I think right now Jones is #6--still outstanding.

If any of them will get better than Kobe over time I would say Carter is the likely choice--he may become a better shooter and is certainly stronger (one way Jordon was able to maintain his effectiveness even after losing a 1/4 step was being real strong).

Good points Haven. I definitely don't think Allan Houston is the best, or even in the top 3, shooting guards in the league. He is just a phenomenal shooter.

Dogbelly, who is the 2nd best in your opinion, you left #2 out? Unless you were trying to be sly and say that Kobe is soooo far out ahead that there is no 2.

I do think Michael Finley is atop the league at is position too. Not the top dog, but in the upper echelon anyway. Ray Allen is up there as well. This debate has gone on in here several times.

I was not arguing above that Eddie was indeed the best, but that he is perhaps the best all around SG, and that a case can be pleaded for him as the top SG.

As far as his attitude, I did not hear the quotes from after the Philly series. But he had every right to speak his mind. I do know that he is a team player, and that he DOES move well without the ball and make things happen on both ends of the floor. I will never contend that Kobe has a bad attitude. Plus, I don't know any of them personally, so I can't speak on their attitude, only what I see them put forth on the court.

.68 blocks this year?? He is a guard!! It is not expected of him to average 3 blocks a game.

Let's see, the SG with the highest BPG average is Kobe at .94. That's intimidating too right? As for the rest of the SG's:
    Iverson - .07
    Finley - .39
    Pierce - .85
    Houston - .17
    EJ - .68
    Allen - .23

That .68 doesn't look so bad anymore in the scheme of things does it?

Let's look at some guard stats...like steals!

Your top SG's steals per game:
    Iverson - 2.06
    Finley - 1.33
    Pierce - 2.08
    Houston - .79
    EJ - 2.67
    Allen - 1.34
    Kobe - 1.61

Hmmmm. Overall, the intangibles seem to sway towards EJ, Pierce, and Kobe (except he is a little light in the steal dept.)

I don't honestly think Houston is the best 2 in the league, I was just curious if I would be able to prove that he was at all. Obviously I failed but at least I got some replies. Iverson is the best 2 in the league. Kobe may be actually, but he isn't even the go-to-guy on his team so he can't really show it yet. But like he says, Shaq will be 40(actually 35 but this is what Kobe said) when Kobe is 28, so then we'll see who the best really is.

Eddie Jones is a great, great, role player. Clearly Kobe, Iverson and Carter (he is really a 2, make no mistake) are more dominanting players, and by most accounts, better players. Of them I do think Kobe is probably the best, but you could make a good argument for Iverson. No reasonable person would say Eddie Jones.

But I think ya'll are a bit hard one Eddie Jones. Jones would be a terrific guy to play along side a guy that breaks down defenses--like Francis, Payton, Hill, Duncan, Webber, KG, etc. You can't discount Eddie Jones consitently borderline incredible steal #s and the guy knocks down open Js--just don't count on him to create open shots or hit off balance ones. A lot of the critics here have thrown endless praise at Shandon and MD, but they are similar players in many ways to Eddie Jones except they aren't quite as good as him and in my opinion will always be a poor mans Eddie Jones-mind you this isn't a bad thing.

I should have said doesn't need a lot of shots to be effective, not handle the ball.

Also when Eddie played with Shaq they were a team in trouble. They had not developed an identity yet, Shaq was not the best C in the game, the team (especially Shaq) didn't play much defense, & Kobe & Shaq were fighting for shots.

I won't argue the Eddie is the best 2 guard, but he could be a perfect fit for many teams, who already have a primary scorer and need a second scorer, who plays D.

I don't see how this has ANYTHING to do with the Rockets in any way.

You guys do know there is an NBA forum, right?

SA was mentioned in this thread, is that "Rocket" enough for the forum police??

Yes, the thread probably should be in the NBA forum, but the title is clear and very self-explanatory about its content (don't read it if your not interested), so it is not worth mentioning multiple times that this may not in its best forum. I am sure next time this exchange with be in "NBA..".
