The fact that walls have been damaged or destroyed doesn't make them ineffective, it makes them less than 100% effective. If walls had no security effect, they wouldn't have been used as security for all of human history. Their effectiveness is increased if they are guarded. Safes have been broken, but people still store valuables in safes.
I dont get the concept that the wall wouldnt help curb illegal immigration? Thats like saying the xray machines at the airport may not catch everything so lets get rid of them? We can always build the wall and stack it with other surveillance tools to help limit illegal crossings. I dont think folks on the left realize that if you want more immigration like i do then the best way is to have a secure border. You will never win over the public if they dont think the border is safe. We should build a wall and hire more judges so we can process more legal claims. Its not a zero sum game.
It has a low ROI without enforcement measures (tech, surveillance, patrol, ...). Every single X-ray machine at an airport is supported by analyzing technology and is manned, otherwise it's pretty useless. We don't have anything remotely close to that for the border wall/fence/natural barriers.
Crossing down 50% since Title 42 expired. Weird huh. We were told it would be a massive wave that will destroy the US. The admin brought in extra personnel just in case of an increase. They warned that there might still be an increase. They seem to have good preparedness and is still ready for an increase. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us...ssings-are-down-50-since-title-42-2023-05-14/
You do know that DHS has drones monitoring the walls and have censors on the ground which help track foot movement right ? Democrats know how to govern efficiently. Why anyone would vote GOP blows my mind
I always find the notion that walls are useless absurd. 1. They already have a significant amounts of border wall, all way before Trump ever came onto the scene. 2. People have been using walls to keep people in or out of areas for thousands of years. "WaLls WoNt StoP AnYonE" - like, what? Walls stop people all the time, all day every day. I guess I had better head up to Huntsville and let the TDCJ that all these walls up here are complete wastes of time and money.
I’m going to point out that the fact that I’m part Mongolian show how effective the most famous wall was in protecting China.
Where did I say anything about the rest of the world or claim that the rest of the world doesn’t have issues when it comes to immigration? FWIW There are a lot of Canadians that have not been happy with immigrants and there have been examples of overt racism towards immigrants in Canada. I was making the point that this white washed history taught in middle and high school where Americans rally and welcome immigrants with open arms is just not consistent with reality. Americans have always been uncomfortable with immigrants - yet they have made America a stronger and better country in the long term.
The validity of the Great Wall has historical been a question and even the original Great Wall had a lot to do with the vanity of the the Emperor Qin who also did many other mega projects. The Great Wall wasn’t useless but its overall effectiveness was certainly questionable. It also wasn’t designed for the purposes that a US border wall was for. The Great Wall was meant for stopping a large army with horses. It didn’t do a good job stopping small groups Of people. The same can be said about Hadrians wall or other large historical walls. The Maginot line the most recent large border wall was an abject failure. What was more effective for the Chinese keeping Mongols out was buying off Mongol tribes and keeping them disunited. The Great Wall was always a fall back position and was breached several times by Mongol and others armies it was supposed to keep out.
A wall like a safe works best when enclosing a relatively small area of space. Particularly where it is easy to move defenders short distances to reinforce breaches. That is why a castle works and even within most medieval Castles they have layers of walls with a keep in the middle. as noted with the Great Wall, Hadrians Wall and the Maginot line it’s much more difficult to rely on a wall stretching thousands of miles to defend. Those defense were also not for small groups of people like smugglers crossing but for large armies. A good recent example is in GOT. The Wall proved to be a formidable barrier at the Battle with a large Wildling army but small groups of wildlings were able to get over enough of that a significant force of them were already across to launch a rear attack on the Nights watch.
The Maginot line is not the most recent larger border wall. The Korean DMZ is and it is quite effective actually.
