My initial claim was that Visa Overstays are still currently the majority. That article states it was 2:1 apparently at 2019. Are you saying it's drop below 50%? And why are we splicing hairs here? Visa Overstays are still most illegal aliens in this country.
Common sense. In the past 3 years, visa entries have fallen dramatically. Border crossings may have as well, but certainly not to the same extent. Additionally, that 2:1 ratio has always been suspect since we know that the border crossing figures are incorrect. There are a number of unknown border crossings that aren't included.
Your original claim was that visa overstays is the #1 source of illegal immigration. Without the proper qualifiers, that's a misleading statement. Were they the leading source of immigration in 2022? 2021? Further, there's not much we can do about visa overstays. Whenever they run afoul of the law, deport them. Beyond that, what else can the government do? At the very least, they're a known quantity, and they were vetted prior to arrival. On the other hand, there's a lot we can do about border security.
How is it misleading given the number of illegal immigrants in this country are still mainly due to visa overstays? You are free to share data that contradicts that point, until then, I don't think you are debating genuinely.
Again, if you require data for such a blatantly obvious statement, then you're arguing in bad faith. Do you genuinely believe that, for 2020-2022, visa overstays were the largest source of new illegal immigrants? If not, then your blanket statements need qualifiers. Regarding visa overstays, what steps do you think should be taken to address the ones already here?
Prosecute and prison time for any business owners that violate labor laws and hire them. Demand would plummet.
Sweet Lou wanted to talk about visa overstays. The comment you responded to very clearly referenced visa overstays. I agree with you though. For border crossings, that's one of several measures that should be taken.
Probably that measure alone will be the most effective. AND humane. Other means I'm sure you are referring to are probably more inhumane to people just looking for a way of life. Sorry it's kinda my issue of having some basic amount of empathy and not being a psychopath like most people who make the border the number on issue of our time.
I disagree. You're basically advocating for open borders. As you said, they're just looking for a better life. If there's a support system in place (i.e. true sanctuary cities or even established relatives), that would still lead to widespread border crossings. And even without a support system in place, life in America would most likely be better than wherever they left.
So how do these people find a living? Im for border security that is reasonable. Patrols, drones, surveillance etc. all positions the Democrat platform expressed in 2015. But a building 1000+ mile wall is absurd. Explain your way to remove millions of humans in mass humanely. I'm sincerely open to ways if it's done humanely and doesn't cause massive trauma for millions.
I don't know that it can be done. If they're already here, you'd have to wait until they encounter law enforcement and then deport them. That's why the issue is about preventing their entry. Its very easy to survive if you have a support system (i.e. family/friends already established here).
Ask Alabama farms if getting rid of migrants worked out. How do they find a living? I'll hire a hard working, low drama humble person any day over an entitled lazy big-mouthed ******* regardless of citizenship. What that means is I don't care if they're migrants or not. Character counts.
You can prevent it by removing demand. But I know it's too late for this but this is America reaping what it sowed for over a century of manipulating regimes in South America which in essence destabilized these regions having major swings between fascists and leftists. Maybe those corporations and CIA should have had more foresight with the long term repercussions.
That's far too simplistic a perspective. As long immigrants believe that they can have a better life in America, they'll come.
A better life implies a steady wage job... And don't lecture me about simplistic solutions to illegal immigration. That is literally the calling card of the right when it comes to everything from crime to migration.
They do have a better life in America. They talk to their friends and families, then they come. This entire country was built on hungry immigrants. For 500 years. You can't be hungry if you're full. Stay hungry or get passed. That's the nature of a capitlisitc society.
And the irony here is that the entire economic system conservatives have fought for tooth and nail for a century is the exact system that requires this type of cheap labor and therefore demand of illegal migrants.
