What do liberals call illegal immigrants now? Because that term isn't socially acceptable anymore Asylum seekers or undocumented immigrants?

Undocumented is more technically accurate than illegal. Asylum seekers are legal and should be documented, so that doesn't work at all. But I generally still say illegal immigrants because it used to be commonly understood and isn't trying to be technical. Though now I see it applied to people who are totally legal and documented immigrants by xenophobes, so a more technical vocabulary might be warranted.
The idea of a path for citizenship for illegal aliens in the USA wasn't invented by Harris or even the Democrats. Ronald Reagan worked on amnesty and a path for citizenship for illegal aliens 40 years ago. There was even a few years ago bi-partisan support for Dreamers having a path to citizenship. There are 11-12 million illegal immigrants (including those that have overstayed their visa) in the USA - and many of them have been in the country for decades. There were nearly 9 million illegal aliens in 2000 in the USA. Many of these people have spouses and children born in the USA. Many of them were brought to the USA at a very early age as well. There is no feasible way that ICE is going to hunt down and deport millions of people. First, the man power and cost would be incredible. Second, it would cause a Civil War, with some Americans hiding illegal aliens that have been here a long time. Third, families will be broken up and fourth - some of these countries will not take these people back after decades. That doesn't even get into the economic costs and what inflation would be in the USA if that many blue collar workers were removed from the work force in the USA. So - the honest truth is that some of these people will and should get US citizenship. There is no secretive and covert conspiracy. It is the cold hard truth. That doesn't mean we don't need border reform - we certainly do - but these sensational headlines are stupid, but I understand it is politics and we are in the midst of a close election.
Germany has some serious issues - I don't know if Germany is not the melting pot that the USA is - if it is that Germany takes especially radical Muslim immigrants or if it is cultural --- but Germany has issues that the USA by and large does not have. Even the wild Italian anarchists and the Eastern Jewish Communists that made land fall in the USA lost extreme radical tendencies within a very short period of time. We did have immigrants on occasion planting bombs and we had organized crime - but we did not have what Germany has now --- and in fairness, before WWII Germany also had extremist immigrants as well. I support immigration - my experiences by and large have been very positive, and I also selfishly like having different cultures around me--- but I can see how in Germany people would feel different. There were protests in Germany recently, 25,000 Afghanistan/Syrian immigrants marching and calling for the overthrow of the German government and the establishment of a theocracy in Germany.
Ive pointed this out many times before including how there are some Clutchfans who are here because of Reagan's "amnesty" program. I'm also going to note that historically too Chinese and other Asians were denied US citizenship and for decades the only way Chinese could get here was through less than legal means.
I have been to Dearborn and Detroit in the last month to six weeks. The area is actually thriving now. There are a lot of Arabs - especially in some of the suburbs. I did not have any issues - the majority of Arabs were not first generation and were what I would call Westernized. I did notice a few that were dressed traditionally and I assume that they are recent immigrants.... but based on history, their children and children's children will assimilate and likely not even be very religious because the US melting pot always wins.... the Italians were stubborn... and they have assimilated... the melting pot does not lose.
I just was making a site visit for one of the my projects in Southern MN. They are getting close to opening and all of the painters and drywallers were speaking Spanish. The construction supervisor was also complaining that he can't get enough labor to finish the project faster. I didn't ask anyone's immigration status but I'm guessing saying "ICE!" loudly might not be a good idea if we want to get the project done.
Yes - what isn't discussed is that we made a decision well over 100 years ago to prevent Asians from coming to the USA because they were viewed as too exotic and not white. So we kept them out, and after awhile it wasn't discussed..... and Chinese and Japanese still came in illegally, but not as many. I think that the USA has suffered because of those laws, many of those immigrants went to Canada and some to England and have been extremely successful...... also, there were many many millions of Irish and Italians that came to the USA illegally ..... there are many Europeans and Chinese in the USA now illegally on expired visas and there is an assumption because they came on a plane that they are here illegally. The only realistic solution is some form of amnesty for longer term residents - and Trump knows that, but he doesn't really discuss real policy - he divides people, that is how he gets support. So it is easier to just say you will deport 12 million people.
When trump says he will deport millions, I think it's just an attempt to rile up the base because quite a few maga folks are just racist and they feel there taking the "good jobs". I dont think he will do much more then "attempt" to do something on a small scale but I think his threat is empty, he is a blowhard, and he lies like other folks breathe and if he doesn't do what his promise was then he will spin it, and the base will accept it. I do think its very dangerous the way he talks and makes promises that he knows he can't or won't keep, no one knows what's the truth and what is a lie. I do 100% think he will put the tarriff policy in place and I do think that will hurt the economy, I am not smart enough to know how that would play out over the long term but even Wharton was saying it's a bad idea so not sure who is pushing this agenda, if its trump himself, that scares me but if he is surrounding himself with people who "think" like that then it's even worse. He is not smart enough to figure the minutia of a policy, but he is good at selling it to his base. I still think if he wins, he did it to stay out of jail and doesn't really care about policy, he wants to be "The Man" and grift with his dictator friends. He has to make the base happy so I could see him doing some things that would hurt us, like doing away with certain agencies and on day one he will give his donors their tax cut they signed on for..................
I don't live in Germany - I don't really have an opinion on their immigration laws. I don't believe that Germany should have to take immigrants if that isn't what Germany wants to do. Already having immigrants there complicates the issue - because they are already in Germany. However, again - I am not in Germany or know German culture well enough to say what the solution is. Perhaps it has reached the point where they should offer to pay some of these immigrants to go elsewhere. What I do know is the United States - and I know the history of the USA - immigration and multi-culturalism very well as it pertains to the USA. I also know what Americans have historically put up with and not put up with - and what happens to groups like the Mormons that attempt to circumvent the US culture and government. The USA isn't Germany or Europe. There is no single dominant culture in the USA - it is constantly changing and adapting, and US culture is probably the strongest and most influential in the world on people that move to another country. The USA doesn't force you to do much when you move here - but it happens over time to just about every group of people. There will not be Syrians or Afghans in large numbers trying to over throw the US government or killing Americans - in part because the American people and government will not tolerate it.
No Trump will be Trump. Meaning he'll utilize Red State governors and the National Guard to do fascist things for him at arms length just like he's done with abortion or like what he did with January 6th. He's always going to do what he's always done. Yes he'll go through with it just like he did with Roe and abortion. Unfortunately for us because idiots here in Texas keep electing jackasses like Ted Cruz and Gregg Abbott I predict Texas will be ground zero for what Trump has in mind for his "Deportation Round up". I think Trump wants the show, and wants the shock and awe, but also wants the ability to play stupid if he's ever confronted with the likely horror show it's going to be. No I don't think Trump really is going to do it mostly because he's too lazy, but Yes I do think it'll be done at the state level with MAGA governors like Gregg Abbott and the National Guard.
My only complaint after having immigrant workers complete a large project is the insane amount of Modelo beer cans that need to be picked up.
I also don't think Trump will be in DC much at all in the next 4 years if he wins. I don't think he'll step down ever, and I know JD Vance won't dare piss off the MAGA mob with invoking the 25th amendment. So what you'll see is essentially Trump governing & running the country by Tweet. Every day we will see his entire staff sway like the wind based on whatever come out of his twitter feed. JD, Mike Johnson, McConnell's replacement, and the MAGA Supreme Court will basically run the day to day's country. It'll very much be a Project 2025 wet dream in DC. Especially as they ignore Trump more and more and just invoke into action what they like, and brush off what they don't like that comes out of his Twitter feed, and the occasional rambling phone call. IMO kind of worst case scenario. Placing Trump into a reclusive Cleric type of role, and his worshipers just interpreting signs in the sky like religious fanatics to interpret the worst of the worst that they want to see. Pretty f-ing insane that this is what is likely what we'll be getting for at least 4 more years if not much much longer.
In the sense that being in the United States without authorization is not a crime. It is "illegal" in the sense that the law doesn't allow you to remain, but not that you can be prosecuted for it. Given that ambiguity about meaning, I'd say that's not technical language. "Undocumented" by contrast points more specifically to the problem of being present without authorization.
