I believe it was the general public, not just voters. That information comes from a recent survey (link below). There are over 10 million undocumented or unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. Mass deportation of these individuals would cause so many unintended issues that even supporters would start questioning their stance. People may support mass deportation due to a skewed perception, but they do not truly want the consequences that would follow. https://www.axios.com/2024/04/25/trump-biden-americans-illegal-immigration-poll Half of Americans — including 42% of Democrats — say they'd support mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, according to a new Axios Vibes survey by The Harris Poll. Zoom in: Trump has vowed to carry out the "largest domestic deportation operation in American history," eyeing sweeping raids and detention camps in a plan that would target millions of undocumented immigrants. Americans typically aren't eager to deport immigrants who have put down roots in the U.S. But the poll of 6,251 U.S. adults suggests that the dynamic may be changing amid rising fears about crime and violence. Trump has fanned those fears at every opportunity, campaigning on false claims of a "migrant crime wave" and declaring that immigrants are "poisoning the blood of our country. When asked to identify their greatest concern around illegal immigration, Americans most frequently cited: Increased crime rates, drugs, and violence (21%). The additional costs to taxpayers (18%). Risk of terrorism and national security (17%). Between the lines: The survey found discrepancies between Americans' perceptions of immigration and the reality established by data. 64% wrongly believe immigrants receive more in welfare and benefits than they pay in taxes. 56% wrongly believe illegal immigration is linked to spiking U.S. crime rates. Reality check: Individual instances of violent crime by undocumented individuals drive headlines. But data doesn't show that undocumented immigrants are more likely to commit crimes. Border cities have some of the nation's lowest violent crime rates. Data also shows that undocumented immigrants have lower homicide conviction rates than the general public. The big picture: The survey still found Americans strongly support immigration as long as it is lawful. "Illegal" immigration is what's giving people anxiety. 58% said they support expanding legal pathways for orderly immigration, while 46% said asylum seekers should be protected if their cases are legitimate. 68% said illegal immigration causes major problems in communities, while only 27% said the same about legal immigration. And 65% of Americans think the U.S. should make it easier for anyone seeking a better life to enter legally so they don't need to enter illegally. Methodology: The findings in this Axios Vibes survey by The Harris Poll are based on a nationally representative sample of 6,251 U.S. adults conducted online, March 29-31; April 5-7; and April 12-14, 2024. The sampling precision of Harris online polls is measured by using a Bayesian credible interval. For this study, the data for this population is accurate to within +/- 1.5 percentage points using a 95% confidence level.
This is why I said this thread should be merged with the fear mongering thread. immigrants are people and with any group of people there are going to be bad people. Yet we see it frequently where individual crimes are brought up to be indicative or a while population when overall that population is actually less prone to violent crime than native born Americans.
Yes, clearly deranged to comply with the terms of agreements you have made and not beg for handouts from the feds.
Odd. When did you go to law school. Because Harvard Law was 50K for tuition, room, board, fees, etc. in 2010. You've been on this board for 23 years...
.... you think you're cool by paying interest back on your loans? The government removing accured interest is actually great for everyone. Get your head out of your ass...
2007-10. I think I am behaving responsibly by living up to my obligations, and would suggest the country would be a lot better if everyone else did the same.
Yet you think trump winning would be a better outcome when he's promising on pardoning thousands of convicted felons who were found guilty by a jury. You pretend you care about law & Order yet you have no issue with thousands of criminals not facing the punishments they were given by a court but wanna lecture us about student loans. As a district attorney you're throwing your peers down the toilet. You have no morals or beliefs quit acting as if you're better than anyone
I think Trump winning would be a better outcome for me, though I imagine I will be fine whoever wins. I would prefer a Libertarian win, but I don't think it is likely. I have not heard this plan. What thousands of convicted felons found guilty by a jury? I would venture a guess that I do far more in real life to promote law and order than 99% of the people on this forum, certainly more than you. LOL.
Are you living under a rock or are you just a disingenuous fraud. There have been thousands of people convicted for numerous felonies in relation to January 6 riot. Numerous folks have been found guilty of Sedition and numerous others have been found guilty of violent crimes. Trump is promising a blanket pardon for all January 6 rioters and calls them "hostages" and even has a tribute song for them. These are folks found guilty by a jury and sentenced appropriately. You don't get to label yourself as law & Order and bash others about student loan commitments when you support a man who's willing to spit on the criminal justice system. You are a fraud and a phony
Thousands of people have gone to trial by jury related to January 6th? Explore NPR database of Jan. 6 Capitol riot cases and sentencing status updates : NPR NPR seems to think around 1400 people have even been arrested for anything related to January 6th. 213 trials (not all jury trials). Where are the thousands of people found guilty by juries that you are talking about?
Since this is turned into a student loan debate I will humble brag that I paid off my student loans several years ago. That said I don’t resent forgiving interests or even loan forgiveness programs.
Yet, you would vote for a President who has declared bankruptcy 6 times? What a role model for the country. So why would you support a felon for President? A guy who has spit on the laws his entire life, and gotten away with it because of his money, skin color, and connections. A lying felon facing several more serious charges in court sure as hell isn't the kind of criminal I think should be leading this country.
I died from smallpox several years ago. That said, I don't resent the development of a vaccine or even public health programs.
