Bracket A: 1) Elvis Presley Sorry, Bob. 2) Bob Marley Bracket B: 1) Bob Dylan Sorry, John. 3) John Lennon Bracket C: 1) Jimi Hendrix Prince? Prince?? He is supposed to have broken new ground as a Black musician? Hendrix shattered it, and the bits and pieces are still flying around, influencing every rock guitarist who followed him. He was an incredible songwriter, and was far better live than anyone else I saw, and I saw everyone. Truly, I feel embarrassed for some of you. I just wish you could have seen him play. 2) Prince Bracket D: 4) David Bowie 2) Neil Young A tie. I love both of them. They're superb musicians who play several insruments, and amazingly creative songwriters. Mott the Hoople fans will know what a debt they owe to Bowie, and Queen fans will remember one of my favorite songs of theirs, Under Pressure. Neil is just a freakin' Canadian genius, who I've followed since Buffalo Springfield, when they had 3rd billing behind Strawberry Alarm Clock and Jefferson Airplane. They made the Strawberry Alarm Clock (man, the names groups have come up with over the years... back then it was nuts!) look silly, and those poor guys, while one hit wonders, were pretty damn good in concert. I don't drink much anymore, but I'm going to go have a beer, and see what's smoking outside. And when I'm sure my kids are asleep, you can bet I'll have Jimi cranked up on my computer's sound system. Here's to the Experience. Wish you could have had it.
