Well, I'm not a billionaire. I'm not a millionaire. I've never felt entitled to a "trickle down" but that's just me.
It's fine that you don't feel entitled to it but the issue is that's what was promised. It's not happening. If I told you, work for me, work your whole life for me, and I'll give you x% of the profits...and I'm a millionaire and you still haven't seen those profits, you'd be mad too. If not, then you're just a fool parted with his money and take some pride in the company over yourself. If the company you work for is growing but only the CEOs get the benefit of that growth then that's not trickle down. A lot of modern day conservatives seem to think if corporations get bigger and bigger, that the people will benefit from it. The fact is Americans work and they don't get the rewards for their work. The wealth gap continues to grow. Prices go up, wages stay stagnant. Eventually, people will look for other forms of government. That's what's happening now. No one wants free stuff, they want to be happy and healthy. Really, that's all anyone in the world wants. The more extreme the gap is the more extreme the response will be, history shows this time and time again. The poor will take what they need, they'll be happy to turn over the applecart to do so. It's actually odd to me why so many conservatives are against the wealthy helping the poorer folks out, especially the more Christian crowd, pretty sure Jesus was a eat the rich kind of guy after all. He had no love for people that hoarded their wealth. There does get to be a point where someone has so much money that it is then worthless to them. While people have helipads on their houses, as mentioned before, others are going bankrupt because of emergency hospital bills. So not only do they have to deal with the stress of a loved one being sick or hurt, a son or a daughter for instance but then with the reality that they are now broke as well. No wonder these people are frustrated and wanting to turn from the status quo.
1. Uh, what exactly was promised and by whom and when? 2. Uh, yea... I guess I'd be mad if I worked for someone and they promised a share of the businesses profits and I didn't receive them? Have employers been doing that? People are paid via wages and benefits and potentially other compensation packages... why would anyone expect to receive anything else? 3. Disagree. Many folks and many folks here believe in cradle to grave entitlements.. housing, health, education, food, paternity care, UBI.. etc.. etc.. 4. Conservatives are disproportionately charitable. They just happen to believe in less government than you do. You think the government is a good steward of the peoples money? lol. The federal government brought in 4 trillion dollars in 2018. That's not even counting state and local government. We do not have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem. 5. You think you can "tax the rich and we will be able to pay for everything for everyone" but that's not realistic. You will run out of other peoples money. We are already 22 trillion in debt. SS, medicare and medicaid and other entitlements already take up 60% of the budget. That's more than 2 trillion dollars a year. You, and others want to massively expand entitlements. Medicare for all is estimated to cost 3 trillion a year by itself. How much revenue do you think will be necessary to pay for everything you and others propose? Many Presidential candidates would double or triple the federal budget with their proposals. We can't even pay for what we have now. But we're going to get all that out of the 1%?
1. Are you saying you've never ever heard of Trickle Down economics? Reaganomics? I sincerely ask because it's what conservatives have been doing for decades now. 2. Again, wages have remained stagnant. Summary, wages remain stagnant and the only ones that are seeing their increase in wages are people that are already rich. 3. It's not really entitlements if you work for them though, I think that's the disagreement here. Most Americans work. I also think every citizen SHOULD be educated, I think a country should take pride in educating its citizens. That is something citizens should feel entitled to and something this country has fallen behind on. A country exists to take care and protect its citizens, that's the basic function of a country. You wouldn't fight for a tribe after all if they throw you out of the tribe because you broke your leg. A country fails when it can't protect or care for its citizens. Out healthcare system is it failing its citizens and our education system is it failing our future. 4. Yeah, sure I do, other countries do it just fine. Leaving things like healthcare and education to be profit motivated hasn't worked here or anywhere...ever. So yeah, I think the government can handle some things, some things it cannot. A free market, on the other hand, doesn't work for everything either as your post implies. 5. I never said anything about paying for everything for everyone but we can do things that other countries have proven works and works pretty well. The argument that we can't do it because we can't really isn't something I'd like to hear especially since other countries are doing it and have been doing it and it works. Do you have an alternative? Because what we are doing simply is not working. So why shut down people trying to think of solutions?
lol Americans aren't the most overworked population.. we are heavily worked though, HOWEVER you can argue it's done by the majority very willingly. You can say willingly because near 40% refuse to take their vacation time. I'm sure you'll say 'they don't take vacation because they need to make that money to survive' but the thing is it's the 'high earners' of the US that work the most hours.. not the poor. The diligence of the high earners and their desire to work long hours to master the craft in their field is a big reason as to why the U.S. remains the top contributor in key innovation inputs and outputs, including research and development. Pff, medical doctors work on average 59 hours a week. These doctors are putting all of you regular 9 to 5'ers to shame. I'm assuming you were referencing some studies out there with fallacies comparing America to European countries and Japan. Some articles saying 'America's the most overworked population in the developed world' which didn't factor in all developed nations in the world and didn't factor in developed countries like China who still claim to be a 'developing nation' when we know they most certainly are not.
It’s not about feeling entitled, it’s about investing in the country through infrastructure and social programs that are needed for this post industrial society that America is in.
Yes, they don't take vacation time off because they need every dollar to scrape by and still if they have a sudden medical emergency they are screwed. No family time The careers with the longest hours, for instance, are not the highest earners even... Truck Drivers work more hours on average than doctors. There are other jobs that work over 55 hour work weeks and aren't getting doctor pay...teachers work a ton and are we prepared to talk about their pay? It isn't about this occupation works more than that occupation and if that should put others to shame. The whole mentality that people should work till they drop is problematic, especially when their wages don't increase. I don't think anyone is saying everyone should make over 100k...but if you work an honest job you should be able to live comfortably and happy. Venezuela is not a counter-argument to healthcare or affordable education. This isn't helping hinder the growing popularity of 'socialism' in America, it's a lazy argument that people will never connect to because most Americans DGAF about what is going on outside of America. All they know is that if they fall ill or their kids fall ill they are screwed.
It's why Europeans love the American work ethic. They work fewer hours a week, have a mandatory 4-week vacation, and have America protecting them and Americans are proud of it and wouldn't have it any other way. Americans will brag about how much work they do and how little vacation they take. Then when Europeans point out how much time they get to spend with their family and the vacations they take, the Americans will bring up about how much they protect Europeans with the American military and the Europeans love that too. They are happy for all of it. So in the end, it works out. Americans are proud of how much they work and their military might. The Europeans are proud of the work they do, and how they don't have to spend their money on having the world's best and biggest military. Both sides are happy.
Not true at all Residents having to work near 30 hour shifts.. I agree is outdated and not a good thing for residents or the patients they serve. Doctors working 60 hour weeks though is excellent for patients & doctors alike.. well, excellent for health outcomes, maybe not so excellent for the doctors private social life.
No it isn’t excellent. Doctors are fatigued, make errors and often are forced to rush the treatment of patients. There is nothing excellent about it. The only thing excellent about it is it lets me sue doctors more often for medical malpractice.
The government is actually a far better stewart of where money should be allocated publicly than Individual wealthy citizens. Individual citizens regardless of their wealth cannot Individually determine the best allocation of these resources to where it is needed the most. Depending on charity is how you create severe blind spots in societal needs.
It is excellent. With all those hours it means they are not rushing treatment, but rather taking the time to learn the nuances of their patients diseases and personal biology. More time there allows them the ability to create stronger clinical connections that offer them more relevant clinical care. A doctor never stops learning, more time in the hospital relates to more learning. The more time a patients stay at the hospital is under supervision from the same exact doctor the better. You talk 'malpractice'.. negligence and malpractice issues come via doctors taking hand-overs from other doctors than from fatigue.. Some things are antiquated. Such as when doctors have to pull a 24 hour shift. Those kind of shifts can cause fatigue error & are dangerous. 60 hour weeks on the other hand, evidence based research deems it more than humane. It's actually good. 80 hours probably wouldn't be, 60 though gets the thumbs up as it's leading to good health outcomes. Theres a reason the USA with their doctors averaging nearly 60 hour work weeks leads the world in medicine and solid health outcomes.
I’m sorry but no. Doctors are not working 60 hours a week because they are spending more time on each patient.
Honeyed words from Bernie won't be enough, and if they are it will be sabotaged by the DNC who chose Joe before he ran. I don't hate all of Bernie's ideas, but I don't necessarily think he is right on everything. The guy is largely a joke at this point. Now, boiling me down to a 2-d cardboard cut out to insult is fine if that is your thing but it is lazy. Laziness is of course the default setting for a person who sits around talking about taking things from others.
They are definitely utilizing their time properly, spending more time reviewing charts among other things. They are working 60 hours a week because they choose to mostly. They understand it leads to the best health outcomes directly and indirectly up to a limit.
https://www.trumanlibrary.org/publicpapers/index.php?pid=2279 When the Republican candidate inscribes the slogan “Down With Socialism” on the banner of his “great crusade,” that is really not what he means at all. From a speech by President Harry Truman: "Socialism is a scare word they have hurled at every advance the people have made in the last 20 years. Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security. Socialism is what they called farm price supports. Socialism is what they called bank deposit insurance. Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations. Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people. When the Republican candidate inscribes the slogan "Down With Socialism" on the banner of his "great crusade," that is really not what he means at all. What he really means is, "Down with Progress--down with Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal," and "down with Harry Truman's fair Deal." That is what he means
