Soccer on TV: - One game every Thursday during MLS season on ESPN (between 6-10 PM) - MLS Cup Final on ABC (Sunday morning this year) - UEFA Champions League (2 games on Tuesday and Wednesday every other week) between 1:30 PM and 5 PM - Various games on the Fox Soccer Channel Is it really taking that much time away from your favorite sports?
I enjoy watching soccer, but it's better live and in person...I watch the most soccer when the World Cup is on...I guess I love the competition...We don't see it at that level with MLS, so to truly appreciate it, you have to watch the Champions League... Will it ever be as big in the US as it is in Europe? No, but I hope it'll get close as these guys are athletes and play balls out...
I believe Handball and volleyball can be considered major sports in countries that DO consider them major sports. I'm sure many aussies and brits and africans wonder how and why the f$ck americans can consider baseball a major sport. Don't denigrate other sports just because you don't feel its as high a caliber as your sport of choice. It may not be in your mind but its a major sport to a fair amount of people. And actually amigo, there is a lack of opportunity to watch soccer in America, You act like its on network tv 24/7 with similar coverage as nfl and nba games. No, its on FOX soccer channel and then sporadically on espn 2. Also, i don't give a sh^t if every american has had the opportunity to play soccer as a kid, play the game around the age of 13 or even 14 and then you may have a better understanding and appreciation of the game as opposed to playing it till the age of 10 or 11. And i believe Cricket is not the most popular sport in either Zambia or Wales, last i checked footy/soccer and rugby were tops in wales and zambia is also a footy/soccer nation. Don't just drop names without knowing a bit about the places or without actually having been to the places. I've been to both and i know what sport is king in both places. Plus, footy/soccer is just as popular as hockey in finland. You mention all these ridiculous little island nations and whatnot to prove how soccer isnt the most popular sport everywhere, whoop de doo, who gives a crap about those places. Give me some bigger nations apart from the US and New Zealand where soccer isnt tops. Even Australia despite the love of aussie rules and rugby still embraces soccer. My whole thing is i don't care if you don't like sport, i don't really care if it advances in america, but don't denigrate and diss the sport just because you don't like it. I don't care for curling or figure skating even though they are considered sports but i don't go around insulting them. I can understand that there's a modicum of difficulty in each sport. Just ignore it if you don't like it.
See, i got no problem with that kind of attitude, i don't even care if he doesnt watch the world cup, there's just no need to go dissing a sport because one doesnt understand or care for it.
I played and watched soccer way before I did with basketball (which I started at 6th grade). I've been to different countries and back then the only thing we knew about basketball was Michael Jordan and the Bulls. I pretty much only follow basketball now, but if I were to follow another sport, it would be soccer (MLS excluded). I understand that some people don't like it because it's usually low scoring (unless you're Germany against Saudi), but if you actually watch the whole game there's a lot of drama in there. It's exciting to watch players set up plays and all of those heart breaking misses and saves.. and when they finally score... Priceless. Plus how can you go wrong with the announcers south of the boarder going "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLL!!!! SALDJFA;SLDFJK"
How was my response not calm? Why does liking a particular sport make me un-American? I follow MLS and am an avid supporter of the United States National Team. What about me seems un-American to you?
I'm not being defensive. I laid out why I don't think soccer takes up so much time on TV and you told me to move to Europe. I merely asked what about my post seemed un-American to you.
Yes. Relevance? I can't talk about my dislike of soccer in a thread titled soccerhater.com? Please lord ferrari77, tell me what other threads I am forbidden from posting in and what other opinions I am not allowed to express. On second thought, don't. Instead, go take a long walk off a short pier.
Here's why soccer is much more the thinking man's game than football. In football, you write plays down on paper and memorize them. If someone didn't tell them how to run straight for 10 yards, turn left, then catch ball, these morons would be completely lost. The receivers only know to run a specific pattern because it's a specific play written down on paper and beaten into their heads. Not only that, someone has to tell the QB what play to run from a speaker in his helmet. In soccer, you must be able to read the game on the fly, be creative without anyone writing it down for you, and be able to do it with only one break over 90 minutes, not a 40 second break after a 4 second play. You have to understand how to create space for yourself and your teammates. It's not written down on paper. It's never the same way twice. Don't get me wrong. I love football. But you have to be pretty damn ignorant to use tactics as a reason to not like the game WHEN YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE TACTICS.
Because your opinion about football (soccer) needing to be "fixed", to which you are certainly entitled, is completely ignorant, and not having been outside the US much (a binge drinking trip to a Mexican border town really doesn't count for much) would explain some of the ignorance. Map showing the popularity of football around the world. Countries where football is the most popular sport are coloured green, while countries where it is not are coloured red. The various shades of green and red indicate the number of players per 1,000 inhabitants.
^ You might want to read that legend more carefully. It shows that the darkest shade of red (US included) is also >50 players per 1000 people I do not usually listen to people who say they hate soccer because: A) they are ignorant B) more than likely their dads or friends hated soccer, so the ignorance was transferred there Everyone who has ever told me they hate soccer, has never watched a real pro soccer game in their lives.
does this include world cup games? i caught a couple of em to see what the buzz about it was, got through watching em and went kind of meh..whatever.
Little boy, please learn to read first next time before you respond. I stated I have an issue w/ folk just coming round and dissing a sport for the sake of dissing it. If you don't like it thats fine, you could come up w/ a legitimate reason or just say "hey, i don't like it, it just doesn't float my boat". Don't come round w/stuff like it has no "strategy", and "no time to celebrate". Feel free to express your dislike but i'll feel free to respond, this is America right? I stated my opinion, if you were a big boy you could just go ahead and tell me you disagree w/ my opinions rather than making snarky comments about telling you what threads to post on. Now run along to bed little one and let the grown ups get on w/ the conversation.
Hockey sucks. They should play on a bigger rink... like the size of a soccer field. It would make it more exciting, more strategical, more like a chess match on speed skates. And they should have ice jumps in a few different spots so players could get a little extra momentum and the Flyers could really fly! It would be awesome.
