BRILLIANT question! I didn't even think about that but I'd love to know how others would feel about that.
Interest in Forlan is waning....because he's 33 and has limited years left on his deal so you can probably get him on a free transfer.
I would not have been happy if Lichaj had done what Suarez did against Ghana. The reason being that when Suarez did it, he knew that, although he would get the red card, that Uruguay would have a chance in the penalty shoot-out. That was the last sequence of play for extra time and Ghana had the chance then and there. Suarez made a very smart play that gave Uruguay a chance to win the game. And they did. On the contrary, If Lichaj had done that, it would have been a stupid move. There would still be time on the clock. It's no guarantee that Howard saves the penalty, in which case the score is still 4-2, and if Mexico converts, that leaves us with 10 men and Bornstein on the pitch. Say what you will about how Lichaj played, but the referee marked more men than Bornstein that night. With a depleted squad, Mexico would have almost surely scored again. The two situations, aside from featuring a defender who can't use his hands on the goal line, were totally different.
Edit: Suarez gave Uruguay the chance to save a penalty and then go to the shoot-out, as opposed to giving up a goal with no time remaining and being eliminated immediately. Although it was a small chance that Gyan would miss the PK, he did and Suarez came out looking like a very smart, heat-of-the-moment tactician.
What? I was again having fun, you are possibly the most sensitive poster on this site. If you call that classless then fine, whatever the hades you think Swoly, keep on smiling.... DD
PS. I would have stuck my hand up to stop that goal....and was wondering why he didn't do it that moment. DD
Mexico was also playing with backups in SALCIDO's absence. Also, "Masa" Rodriguez and Sinha were key elements not present. Yes, eleven against ten is not my main argument... but... because we're not out there with the best-selected guys as starters, we didn't have our "best." So... we still made it through the game with the subs AND the second-sub keeper. I agree with you, man. Different situation. That would have been a nasty shooting in the foot. Luckily, what I enjoyed about the game is that it was clean... as far as no handles on any shot... and when the tackles were being hard and the game was getting physical, the ref didn't let it get out of hand even though it seemed at times it was getting dirty.
What do you think about this: http://sports.yahoo.com/soccer/blog...a-Drogba-calls-Gold-Cup-ceremo?urn=sow-wp2785 I think the ceremony could be in english and spanish.
Too much time left to take the red. I guess the American player thought he might be able to deflect the ball with his head.
Funny, but maybe it should have been in English only. It was in both ENGLISH and SPANISH, but just not the Mexico presentation. Maybe next time ESPN or FOX Soccer Channel might want to invest enough money so they get their English-speaking emcees in there? Also, I don't know where Team USA was after they received their awards... and you can clearly see Dempsey upset... but that's no reason to try to storm out. Stay and pay your respects for the winners. I've said time and time again that when Mexico players don't trade jerseys, it shows lack of professionalism and sportsmanship, and so do these actions by Howard and Dempsey.
Maybe you're right. It's clearly as bad as breaking someone's skull on the field...or a keeper swiping at a player after a goal was scored. Do you think the mexican players actually cared where the US players were? I don't and neither does anyone else. Did you say the same thing during any other championship type game? I don't remember anyone complaining about the Heat not being on the floor when the Mavs got their trophy...or even as far back as the Knicks or Magic when the Rockets won. I couldn't care less where the losing team is while the winning team is receiving their awards. No one in any sport wants to sit there and cheer on the winning team after they just kicked your ass. I think Lichaj did the right thing in not going up with his hand. As dumbartonbass said, it's likely Howard doesn't save the shot and they're still down 4-2...only now with 10. If it was a matter of seconds left and it's the only way the US gets to overtime...yeah, you do it. I've done the same. You hope your goalie can make the save. But already being down, having plenty of time left, and the way mexico was already playing, he made the right choice.
^ LOL! I know you're being sarcastic with those first two statements. Yeah, it's not as bad. I remember both things you said and I don't approve of them. Search for those threads. I've said time and time again that we don't need that. After further deliberation and watching the ceremony one more time, I noticed the U.S. players stayed on the right side of the stage and clapped for the Mexican team. I was wrong... they didn't storm out. Dempsey, however, still was on camera acting all upset. Why? Because he just lost? Should have worn your silver medals with pride. Mexicans applauded you as a worthy adversary who made it tough to win. Also, to clearly answer your question at the end: YES, I think every sport should require the loser to stay to applaud the winners. Why not? Be accepting of your champion. Not requiring this will create more LeBrons storming out after losing.
It would be great if everyone was a good sport, but not everyone is.....and sometimes that is what makes them special, the feeling of never accepting defeat. DD
Sour grapes for Howard b/c he sucked that match...There was nothing wrong with it in my opinion... I too thought he should've stuck his hand up...
moot point, the ceremony was in both english and spanish. howard's point is thus invalid. nothing to see here except that howard is a moron.
Not quite. Perhaps he was just pissed and didn't hear the parts in which Fiore spoke in English. It's understandable. Nothing to see here.
