I caught this game late and missed the early scores. Darn ESPN guide said it was on HD. By the replay they had at about the 35th minute, it seemed both goals were Howard's to save. Torres' Mexican league training doesn't go with the U.S.'s style but is the only one with real threatening attack in the middle of the field. Not even Landon doing any harm to the Tico back four. If you watch on Galavision you'd think Fernando Schwartz was going for the U.S. (I guess so, since it's being broadcast to the U.S. and not to Costa Rica). OMG, Costa Rica putting on a home-field advantage clinic and Mastroeni arguing with Landon.
Playing on that turf is hard for every team. It's not just a US thing. Also, how was either of those goals Howard's fault? He's not Stretch Armstrong. Beasley needs to not play left back, though. He's killing us on defense and adding nothing on offense.
^ He only plays well against teams I like? Sorry about that, I saw the replay better. I made a mistake by jumping the gun and saying that. On the first goal, I thought he was on the wrong angle, but on second look, I noticed it was a nicely placed volleyed curve over him. He may have been a bit too much in front of the goal. On the second goal, it seemed he overstepped to the right, while a defender already had that angle closed, and he was late getting back to the middle after the cross. One thing I noticed: the entire U.S. DEFENSE sucks. On the first score, the shot was within FOUR defenders who did nothing. On the second score, there were FOUR Ticos against two U.S. defenders. That's no good right there, brother.
You are right about our defense. It has been non-existant today. Right there on that third goal nobody closed down at all.
Herrera danced in there like me on a weekend. GEEZ. This is what I hate. Not even trying to defend, EE.UU. . Bocanegra said "I'll wait until you get in he--" GOL.
We here in Australia just need one more point to qualify.. have yet to lose in our qualifiers and have plenty of games left...hopefully we win on Sunday(our time)... we should be pretty much at full strength.. Cahill hat trick on its way!
That game sucked. I'm hoping Spector will get a chance on Saturday, he can't possibly do any worse than Wynne or Beasley did. And since we won't be building the lineup around Bradley I'm hoping to see a diamond midfield with an attacking midfielder like Adu paired with a defensive midfielder like Rico or Pablo. Then have Donovan and Dempsey on the wings.
I don't think I was ever this pissed after a game. It was a f***ing terrible effort by all involved...and it starts at the top with Bob Bradley. Marvelle Wynne and Demarcus Beasley at outside backs? At the same time? Are you f***ing stupid? Wynne had no business being out there and it was evident on the 2nd goal. He caused that by being out of position, forcing Gooch to have to come wide...which he did all night long. Beasely did the same most of the night, forcing Boca to have to play too wide as well. Though, I still can't figure out what Boca was waiting for on that 3rd goal. THE FORWARD HAS THE BALL IN YOUR BOX AND YOU'RE JUST GOING TO SIT THERE AND STARE AT HIM? If I was Tim Howard (I'm about to get very politically incorrect), I'd go all Terrets on every one of those defenders and midfielders. Their effort was nothing short of pathetic. Was something wrong with Ching? Why wasn't Spector even in the 18? Get your best damn players on the field. Bradley was playing not to lose and they got their asses kicked for it. They absolutely have to win on Saturday. let Adu get significant minutes in the middle with Altidore up front. DO NOT LET BEASLEY AND WYNNE ON THE FIELD AT THE SAME TIME. I'd prefer neither of them were in camp all together.
I have to wonder if Bob figured we'd lose this game anyway so he decided to do some experimenting, because anybody with the tiniest amount common sense would know that starting those two as outside back wouldn't end well. Ching had a bad hamstring, I'm not sure what his status for Saturday is.
I woulda started Spector though, either at left or right back since he's so versatile and can play either. Bob is not usually a tinkerer so one would have to assume he didn't think his side would win this match and chose to mess about with the lineup and formation. Dr.Ludicrous, as much as I'd love to see a midfield diamond on saturday with Freddy at the top and Rico behind him, I doubt Bradley will be brave enough to do that. I wouldnt be surprised to see an Adu appearance in the 70th or 80th minute again. If he starts Pablo over Rico on Saturday then I'll know Bob definitely has his favourites.
I agree, I'm not really getting my hopes up about seeing a diamond midfield but it would be nice to see. I'm expecting Sascha and Pablo or something like that in the middle.
Was José F. Torres the only one threatening the midfield at all? Even Donovan was non-existant. U.S. should just play all their matches against México, it seems... EDIT: Wrong TORRES.
ferrari77...What I saw of Wynne last night would not have started on my O-30 team on Sundays. I have never seem so many misses from a professional soccer player. I understand the turf was crap (more on that in a second). That's no excuse for mis-hit after mis-hit and poor touch after poor touch. No one played well last night, but his play stood out to me as someone who was not ready for this stage (Beasley stood out as someone who shouldn't be out there because this stage has long since passed him by). On the turf...I work in the synthetic turf industry. What you saw last night was an embarrassment to the industry as a whole. FieldTurf should be ashamed of themselves...but they're not. If by "world class performance and ball roll characteristics" they mean "this field will be like playing on an ice hockey rink that they let the Barnum and Bailey's elephants walk over after an NHL game with out ever using the Zamboni once", then they are correct.
It's hard to generalize from this game when Costa Rica is (I believe) 19-1-3 at home in qualifying since 2000. That's basically 3 qualifying cycles.
