So Austin will have a soccer team in 2009, affiliated w/ Stoke City and they will actually hold summer camp here (summer camp for Brits ... in Texas? ... oh yeah ). So all you UK football fans... what's the story on Stoke City? I looked on their website but all the english looks greek to me. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/stoke_city/7203023.stm
We've had a pro team in Austin in one form or another for years -- I believe the last venture was the Lone Stars (they may even still be around). I've always thought an MLS team would be the one pro sport that could make it in Austin...maybe. Brits training in Austin during the summer -- this I have to see.
Stoke City currently sits fourth in the English Championship table. The top 2 teams at the end of the season get automatic promotion to the Premiership while the next 4 teams have a playoff with the winner also getting promoted. Stoke just recently purchased one of Manchester United better young talents as well, CB Ryan Shawcross.
I don't see AUSTIN in there... Did anyone protest this stewpid name? GO 1836! yes, yes, I know... San Diego State...
I think they finally folded, again. I knew some players who doubled in some of the leagues I play in. I haven't seen them around in a while. There was a team started late last year called the Austin Stampede that is to play in the PDL. The Aztex are acquiring them to be their U23 team. I still haven't seen where these guys are going to play. I wonder if UT will loan out Myers Stadium. Otherwise, it'll probably be House Park or another high school stadium.
These are outdoor teams. Completely different game. Indoor soccer is on a field more of the size of a hockey rink and is enclosed with walls. I know the owners of that place. I play at their original spot off of 1431 in Cedar Park.
Thanks. The termonology is all new to me... promotion? Makes sense. A concept not generally (or ever?) found in American sports, but I like it.
To my knowledge, there's not an American sport that uses promotion/relegation. It's a great idea in my opinion because it forces every team to spend money to be competitive, or be relegated (dropped to a lower division). The amount in TV rights alone is night and day from the Premiership to the Championship.
I agree. We take the Rockets for granted; seems like most teams don't actively pursue a championship, hoping that some combination of youngsters will just make them a lot of money.
We've also got a recently demoted arena football team and a D-league NBA development squad. (do we even have the d-league team anymore?) :sad face:
Yes, but they're now completely owned by the Spurs. In all fairness, the arena team demoted themselves.
