Not making mistakes has value. I will argue that he is not better than Black on an already loaded team. I called this years ago. This is the one move I was dreading for years when 30% of clutchfans were clamoring for this guy. I am hoping management thought he could be coached up and focus on what he does well. Maybe Dwight was a factor in his coming... If he could play like a Faried or a Rodman and focus on defense & rebounding we'll be okay, but he has years of habits that can't simply be changed during the season. Now we are stuck with a big coaching problem...how do you put Josh in a position to succeed offensively? Could he put his ego in check and defer to players more efficient than he is. Could he focus on going downhill and attack the basket, possibly drawing fouls or kicking out to shooters. Could he just focus on offensive rebounding... maybe we'll get lucky and Josh will be successful with the way that he wants to play. If we could be successful with Josh playing a big part, Ill give the coaching staff/GM a lot of props. Maybe being around good players, his best friend (Dwight), and a good coaching staff can turn him around.
When we picked up Josh Smith I immediately thought of Cuban's accusation during the off season, when the Rockets cared more about bringing in assets without thought of chemistry. I had a feeling eventually he'd say something
Please tell me that you realize that you lose ALL validity on any point you make (especially ones where you are implying someone is dumb) when you are incapable of spelling "you're" correctly. Not trying to be rude, it's just the truth.
We were struggling before Josh Smith here. In fact, ever since Dwight has been back we have looked terrible. It will take a few weeks for everyone to get comfortable, be patient.
This argument about Pistons winning is flawed... Pistons beat a broken Indiana, Cleveland, and Orlando team. Let's see how they do with SAS, Dallas, and Hawks. I really don't think they'll suddenly be this awesome East team. I bet after the Knicks game (their next game) they'll start losing. Also if anything it shows that they shouldn't have put Smith in at SF, why sign him to a huge contract and not play to his strengths.
Smith was instrumental in the Memphis win. Yes, he was bad against the Spurs and Wizards, but so were Bev and Ariza. Terry was also terrible in the Spurs loss. And Dwight was sleepwalking through the Wizards game. There is more at play here than just Josh Smith.
I'm sorry, but using that "Pistons are 3-0 since Josh Smith left" argument to suggest that Smith was a terrible player holding them back is so ridiculous. And again -- this is from someone who 100% did not want him here and still has significant reservations. OF COURSE the Pistons get better without him. Dumars signing Smith when Detroit already had Drummond & Monroe was an idiotic move from jump, given the overlap in their sizes, skill sets, and rotational expectations. If you're even slightly surprised that Detroit immediately improved by removing one of them from that cluster**** of a too-crowded front court, you can't possibly have been paying attention to them over the course of the past two seasons.
I rather have Josh Smith in the playoffs than without him. In the playoffs, he will be the difference we past the 1st round. We need more inside play instead of chucking from the outside.
Dead on, I basically meant same thing but didn't go into as much detail as you. Dumars was great as a player, but his FO management towards the end was a bit off. I mean he started out great (overlooking the Darko Draft Pick) by winning in 04 but I think the real demise started when he tried to force things by getting AI. Then it got worse, like watching a poker player on tilt trying to get back to that high of winning with a nice list of ever questionable signings.
I'd feel a lot better about Smith if he hadn't been "guaranteed" a starting spot. If DMo continues to outplay him, what happens? DMo's been working his tail off for years to get his shot, but sorry, Josh Smith's agent beat you for the spot. Better luck next season.
Ditto for Black/Dorsey. If Morey wants a ruthless meritocracy, I'm OK with that. But it has to honor merit.
Lance Stephenson is a perfect example with the Bobcats. I do hope Josh is on a short leash. He's a poisonous player; a type of player that can stop a team's momentum with his bad decisions.
