Battier is an upgrade from Ariza with Yao in the lineup. He complements Yao better on offense because he is essentially a spot up 3 point shooter who stays out of the way and lets Yao operate. Ariza was better in the open court, and i think he would not have been as effective defensively as Battier even though Battier has lost a step.

Now if Yao goes down again than Bud is better than Ariza offensively to match up with Brad Miller working off of screens and picks, He just lacks alot on defense. I honestly feel better with Battier in the lineup with Martin, Brooks, Scola, Yao on the floor as well. Playing team defense is how we can win and Ariza as good he was at steals and some lock down assignments, cheated alot and was not always a great team defender like Battier. With that being said I would say we still could upgrade with about 3 or 4 players in the NBA at the 3 spot. Morey's wish list of SF's on the market to push for would look something like this.

    1. Melo
    2. Grainger
    3. Iggy

-I dont know how in the world Morey could work a deal for any of these guys but you know he will try as long as it does not cripple us in the future.

I almost want to say that with Indiana picking up Collison, they won't be trading Granger this season or possibly even next season because they now have the pieces to possibly slip into the playoffs.

And this was the season that we could have possibly picked him up, as long as Indiana was doing poorly, since we wouldn't have been able to afford him next season with the looming contract negotiations of Yao and Brooks.

And this salary dump of Ariza shows that Les really isn't willing to spend exorbitant amounts of money (i.e. adding Granger).

If we were going to get Melo, im guessing the trade would be

Battier, New york Knicks 1st rounders, and Martin along with the newly acquired 6 million trade exception.

Nobody. Everytime i say we should go after someone he turns into Courtney Lee for Ariza or Landry for Martin. I dont want to see what another would net now. :)

If the plan is to get some star like Granger or Anthony, the plan should be to acquire the star first and then dump the players taking up room on the roster. If Ariza was moved to make way for some other, better player, Morey's got the order all backwards. We're no closer now to getting a star than we were before and I wouldn't hold my breath until we get one either. Sure, it'd be nice to get a top-5 player to take our starting SF role, but the fact is Ariza was traded away to get out from under his contract, and Shane Battier is the presumptive starter now. Michael Jordan is not walking through that door.

The only person that could get us out of this Ariza debacle is Iggy.

I doubt Melo, Granger, Iggy, Wallace is coming here, it'd be nice, but doubtful. I see a three way with the Knicks happening and Philly, but no Iggy. I see Young as a piece with Curry and Douglas. The reason being Jeffries has been mentioned already and was dangling Curry + assets AND NY and Philly were the last 2 team in trade talks. Now the Pistons are trying to move Hamilton and Prince i'll pass no thanks. No Paul or Melo i see both signing with the Knicks so now we move to the 2nd tier of players and i see Young, Curry and Douglas possibly being moved to Houston.

I'm guessing we'll have to ship out Hill or Patterson at some point to get a defensive wing. I was really worrying about our defense at the 1-2 positions, but now I'm worrying about the 3 too. Is Lee better than Martin at defense?

Nobody. I think the Rockets are set at SF with Bud and Shane.

Expect this season to be Chase's breakout year.

Iggy would be the only good fit for this team, as we have plenty of offensive finishers in our starting lineup and could only use a good defensive player/clutch playmaker at SF rather than a high usage scorer. But I wouldn't be surprised if we just stood pat and kept the veteran core together with Battier and the youngster backup in Budinger with the run and gun second unit either.

A proven starter who can play some offense and defense. Not a guy who frequently scores four points a night, nor a still inconsistent youngster who you can not rely on to defend opposing starting wings. Yeah, someone not like that.

We'll see. The only reason Melo to NYC started was because of Amar'e...what if the Knicks are still a mess going into all-star break? Do you think Melo will be rushing to go there?
