That is a lie. It was not the most serious/substantial healthcare proposal put forth in the last 20 years. In fact, it wasn't even the most popular bill put forth by the Republicans that same year. They introduced many bills that year.

And Romney, the moderate Republican repudiated his own plan due to the rightward shift.

YOu're basically arguing that the pronounced rightward shift really isn't one, since nobody actually supported the old policies - this is belied by all available evidence.

Is it your contention that Romney's health plan was substantially similar to Obamacare?

Yup, especially the one part Republicans hate the most (mandatory coverage provision).

If I recall correctly, wasn't Romney's healthcare plan tailored specifically to fit Massachusetts' needs? If so, wouldn't that make it significantly different than Obamacare?

Romney implemented if for a state with very few uninsured. That is a lot different than implementing a similar plan for the entire country of 350 million people. He said that himself.

Not really, considering that the basic model, and more specifically, the mandatory coverage provision that Republicans *most strenuously" objected to and have based their entire "repeal" campaign around - exists in both.

Health care is simply one area in which Republicans have repudiated their own positions and moved further to the right -if you really want to look at rightshift - look at Presidential hopeful John McCain ocming out against an immigration bill that Senator John McCain was a sponsor of .

    Rightward shift.

Really? Can you point to a single other healthcare bill the GOP introduced during that time period?

Which one became the framework for health care reform that was actually implemented by a Republican governor who was the GOP presidential candidate in 2012?

    Hence "serious/substantial".

None of them hold a candle to Trader_Jorge. I feel like the meme, but back in my day, trolling meant something. He had flair and panache. Here's hoping he comes back with some bombast for 2016.

Yes, Romney's plan and Obamacare both have an individual mandate. They're similar in that regard. However, Romney's plan specifically addresses the needs of Massachusetts while Obamacare tries to fit every state under it's model. Why don't you think that's a significant disconnect?

Hey, and Romney's was printed on letter size paper and Obama's on legal size paper.

Romney's objection was not on federalism grounds - to the extend he manufactured one, it was due to the profound rightward shift that had occurred sicne the 1990's in the Republican party.
