I never really thought much about this....I'll answer with John Elway. When he won his first SB, I went for the Broncos because they were the underdog. (I think.) So I kinda thought he was a hero, or something like that. A short time later, he started doing Coors commercials. GREAT for a hero! I also used to have terrible cable that had Denver news. Since I live only about 150 miles from Houston, this was BAD! I kept hearing Broncos this, Elway that. Eventually I really started to despise the whole team. BTW, I'm a Cowboy and Texan fan. (I don't know how that's possible.)
