Shanna: Do you really believe that whoever's on top doesn't have a disproportiante # of fans? You seem to be implying that bandwagoning doesn't exist. I don't mind New Yorkers who are happy the Yankees won. Heck, the people obsessed with baseball tradition that like the Yankees don't even bother me that much. But I don't see how you can not be from New York and pick the Yankees as your team in the 90's w/o being a bandwagoner. Granted, the Yankees have made some good decisions. But not as good as Oakland, Houston, or Seattle, for instance. If you like "good GMing," root for one of those teams.
I never accused you of that. That was Manny. All I ask is that people stop to attack me and my character because of my love for a team. You questions my character (indirectly) in another thread. Why cant we stick to talking trash about the teams instead of attacking each other. After all the biggest and most important reason we are here is becaus WE ARE ALL DIE HARD ROCKET FANS FIRST!
Payroll is a huge advantage to signing players. No other factor compares. Money talks, the rest is just window-dressing. I wish baseball would get a salary cap just because I'm tired of hearing about the salary disaparity. Too many teams have a built-in, ready-made excuse for not being able to compete. I think a soft cap, luxury tax, maximum salary system like the NBA has would allow most teams to keep their players, and would stop the salary escalation. By the way, haven, of course the Red Sox don't have any bandwagon fans. Any fans that hopped on the bandwagon the last time the Red Sox won anything, in 1918, have probably passed away by now.
fair enough! I can respect that. AH! It warms my heart that the Yankees have (at least for one day) given us all something else to focus on besides this dang war! What a great day! It's been, shall I say it? Almost normal around here!
Do you really believe that whoever's on top doesn't have a disproportiante # of fans? Absolutely there are more fans of those teams, and there are absolutely a ton of bandwagonners. That said, I see no reason to accuse specific individuals of bandwagonning just because they happen to like a team that also has bandwagon fans. Yes, the NYY have bandwagon fans. Does that mean every non-NewYork-living fan is a bandwagoner? I don't believe so. I also don't see why its bad for a person to bandwagon or pick up a team when its winning. It doesn't hurt me at all, and they certainly enjoy it. Since sports are supposed to be fun, I don't see how this is a bad thing. On another note, I can guarantee you the Jazz won't pick up as many "new fans" if they ever win a championship as the Lakers did in 1999 & 2000. In many cases, these people coming out of the woodwork are not new bandwagon fans -- they are just casual fans that start getting more vocal when the team they already liked starts winning.
Like I said before, I think it says something about that person. Hmm, I only like it when things are good, so if things screw up, I'm outta here.
Fair enough... but isn't it equally fun for the rest of us to laugh at them in our mutual dislike of the Yankees?
Fair enough... but isn't it equally fun for the rest of us to laugh at them in our mutual dislike of the Yankees? Maybe so -- I guess I've just never cared about other fans. I've always rooted for/against teams, but I tend to ignore their fans. I actually love being near other teams' fans at games, as long as they just root for their teams instead of trying to rub it in or whatever. I was at the ATL/HOU game #1 and there were a couple of ATL fans rooting like crazy for their team. Toward the end, though, they just got obnoxious yelling at other fans instead of at the Astros or Braves. It was annoying as hell, and I just get tired of that kind of stuff.
When I was younger, I just follwed certain players. In basketball, it was Sir Charles, in MLB Wade Boggs. Bread Truck made me a fan of our beloved Rockets. Wade did the same for the Yankees. It has nothing to do with the teams success, otherwise I would be rooting for the Lakers, now wouldn't I. Hydra, Rocket/Yankee fan in CA
