In elaboration of where I think he's going with this, I think he's referring to the same idea I heard in today's reading for Catholics, sort of calling out those that sacrifice in public and bellyache and make everyone aware of their suffering for some sort of spotlight or credit. Matthew 6:1-6,16-18 Any single man that gives up jerkin' it for 40+ days is probably on the short track to sainthood.
if someone isn't religious, why the need (or want, I guess) to show their discipline and will power? Let's say I know I have it...then I don't need to show it to anyone else. edit: hmm I guess if you're not as confident in those characteristics (and everyone certainly has different flaws--those could easily be them), then maybe you can use this to prove it to yourself ok, just answered my own question
vinsensual, I agree, sir. Hence why I didn't come into the Hangout saying "Hey, you guys! I gave up [something]!! What did YOU guys give up?!?!?!" Pics or G.O.O.H.
Lent brings back awesome memories of High School and College when me and my buddies used to have Long john Silvers EVERY Friday (since two of them were Catholic)
You should check out forums.bodybuilding.com I hear they can help you out. In keeping with the religious nature of this thread, I'm totally going to hell now.
Trying to get the thread back on track..... I'm definitely not Catholic, but I'm giving up Sweets. Lent is not Just a Catholic thing - its a spiritual thing. You see some Methodists, Lutherans, Episcopals, as well as some independent churches etc..observing Lent as well.
