Yeah....you'll find that when you include a blatantly racist remark in a larger statement, only the blatantly racist remark gets the attention.

For example, no one really pays attention to the rest of Michael Richards stand up attempt.....just the end part when he was yelling the N word.

If you are going to be a blatant racist, people won't take you seriously Remii, you should probably work on that. When I say that, I say it not just so people will start taking you seriously again, but just so that you'll be a better person. Racism is not okay simply because you are a minority, in many ways, it's worse because you should know better given that you claim to have experienced negative effects from it in the past.

I have.

Where I grew up, if anything I was a target because I was not a member of the majority race. I was constantly in fights between 10 and 13.

I lost my childhood friend when his father killed him and his mother in his apartment with a knife. I heard screaming, didn't realize it was his mother until the cops came 30 minutes later. They didn't even clean up the blood from the front door and front windows. My upstairs neighbor was killed (so was the rumor as he just disappeared). His brother was attacked and shot and fled to mexico. I saw a lady raped in front of her front door when I was about 12 years old. Several of us were playing basketball in the chain linked fence area and just watched it happen. There was the man that died after choking on his own vomit while in his car, his head hit the horn and no one bothered to do anything... the horn kept going for 20 minutes until someone called the cops. There were other stories... lots of gang violence. Lots of 12-14 year old girls pregnant from step dads or 30 year old boyfriends.

I wasn't perfect, had friends that got in a lot of trouble.... but never went to jail, never attacked or raped or abused or stole from anyone. I can see why someone could think that is just "how it is". Still, there were lots of teachers and coaches that told all of us that it didn't have to be that way, that we could have a better life.

Is it harder being in poverty? Hell yes it is, everyone assumes you are trash and deserve to be poor. Everyone assumes you steal and do drugs and even if you are a good kid, you will end up in jail or on drugs.

Empathy is very important, but we also shouldn't completely remove personal responsibility. The biggest problem that I noticed in poverty, is that there is a belief that people have little to no control over their lives. Also, not everyone in the ghetto (which I hate that phrase because it is just code for "black" often) is a bad or irresponsible person. I met many good people.

If you've read more carefully, you'd have seen my position on this particular topic: I think everybody who embraces violence loses--especially the people who "condemn" it while remaining silent as to the root causes of the violence, and the people who silently support systematic violence that enflames every situation.

No one wants looting and violence - you are dumb if you think that.

Looting and violence happens why? Because of institutional discrimination. It's a reaction to it. A people without hope is a people ready to destroy what others have.

 

That's not true, there have been people on this very thread that say that they want looting and violence. Asking if someone else wants to add their name to the list of those here who have already come out in favor of vandalism, violence, and looting is completely fair.

 

How many of these hopeless people that are looting and destroying would you say are collecting goverment checks? Just stop it. No excuse.

 

I was nonspecific because I'm talking about the unique experiences of individuals. I see you're going with an argument that discrimination against inner-city minorities doesn't exist. You may be in too deep a well for me to hoist you out of.

Nobody disputes injustice and unfairness exist, especially for the poor. But being born in this country already gives you a better chance at escaping that cycle of poverty than the rest of the underprivileged people on this planet.
