Good to hear, the roof stuff seemed to indicate otherwise and I figured there was a different response than just psychiatric referrals. Assuming you're white and male, and married with kids, there are some industries in smaller towns or regions where you'd probably be able to snag an Operations Manager role that would otherwise go to Engineers or MBAs.
Well, I think the latest stats are that 75% of employees don't read the cover letter. But since you never know if you're sending it to the 25% who might, you always have one just in case. I just tell people not to write the CL that references the ad throughout the entire letter. First, you can't use the letter for anything other than that ad. Second, if the job doesn't work out, you spent a lot of time for nothing. Better to have a CL specific to your background, but not 100% based on the ad
Nowadays it's more likely from India. "The client for this posting is actually looking to fill two or three openings, do you have any additional names and numbers you could refer to me?"
On the resume, don't go back beyond 10 or 15 years tops. And don't put the date on your college degree- but do put the name of the college and the location. On the other advice, I never take those lightly- ever. But if you're not truly suicidal, that is terrific to hear. All the best to you in your career and life endeavors.

That date was Game 4, the elimination game. Remember the furious comeback which sent the game into overtime? I always felt that if we had JUST started a little earlier, we probably would've won that game. Probably still would've lost the series, but who knows? Maybe if we win, we keep Cassell and Horry, and they get better and maybe we're even better w/o Barkley. Maybe not, but who knows? The point is that particular game stands out in my mind as the ultimate example of procrastination- to me, as a Rockets fan, anyway. And so with job search, I always tell myself May 12 1996 to remind myself not to wait too long to get the ball rolling (pun intended).

This. Especially as a male, it is very easy to define yourself by your job. Don't let that happen. Remember that you can always look for different types of jobs as well. You may make less money, but that doesn't mean you cannot appreciate other aspects of life. Find things you enjoy.

The Ladders is hilarious. They'll tell you a great resume is **** just to get your business. True story - I worked for them a few years ago as a side thing. I wrote a resume for one of their clients. Then, Bryan sent the resume anonymously back to The Ladders for a critique. They ripped it to shreds, of course: their favorite phrase, which they used for all prospects: "You are missing SO MANY key strategies..." Then, we informed them that they just discredited a resume that came from their own company and which their client paid $400 for, which he was now considering asking for a refund. They changed their "trash every resume, no matter how good, to get the prospect's business" policy very quickly after that. But they still do it at times, unfortunately.
Both...to some extent. Experience is a double edge sword. People don't want to hire you for a "lesser" job because they assume you will leave when a better opportunity comes around. Job titles are problem too. Dumbing down the resume is an option for temporary jobs, however, it is basically lying because you are leaving so much out.
There is so much truth in this statement. I'm 51, and have been essentially unemployed for 3.5 years. The only jobs I can get don't pay squat. Once you hit your 40's, you're on borrowed time work wise. You start to make too much and once you become "downsized" or "laid off" you almost can count on having to start over. I spent the first 20 years paying off loans and getting just a little saved for retirement. It's not nearly enough to retire on though and with my jobless search going on for so long I've severely drained my account while now having to answer questions about why I've been unemployed so long. tl;dr This economy sucks so bad...especially if you're a middle aged unemployed male white collar worker. For that reason alone, I'm seriously considering Trump. We can't go on like this.
The President has nothing to do with companies making stupid decisions and not listening to their employees (my case). Congress is the big issue with jobs in this country. Trump is not the answer. Trump is a liar. Him and people like him ARE the problem. Trump outsourced all of his products to other countries. He has bought businesses, only to stripped them and leave the employees and vendors in the lurch. Look at his record. Trump is about making himself money. That's why he won't release his taxes returns. It will show he hasn't paid taxes in multiple years using shady tactics.
If there's any way you can turn your career of experience into some kind of consulting...consulting is one area where they don't mind paying for "experience", in fact they welcome it. And just let me throw out another endorsement for Dandorotik, he's an honest guy that does good work.
