You're hardly getting lower-prices for less consumption. I pay $35 for standard Road Runner right now. The new minimum price is $30 for 4 GB of data a month. This is just Time Warner trying to grab more money from its customers.

They already tried doing it with their Viacom standoff during New Years.

I download 30 gigs from work just yesterday and I do that all the time. Screw this plan. I guess I will switch over to U-verse as soon as this happens.

that's only the case if they're willing to refund you the amount you don't use. so, in actuality you are still overpaying.

Not it's not. They aren't going to be giving you cheaper internet, they are just going to charge more for people who use it more than you. It's simply a cash grab.

Which is their right, but it's pathetic considering our internet speeds are already a joke compared to lots of other places in the world.

    Embarq FTW.

Although I do miss having a cable modem instead of DSL.

WTF??? I rarely use the internet; I hardly download anything, and I'm pretty sure I can use up 40 GB in one weekend! I've got their ridiculous "price lock" BS until June, and I'm stuck in an apartment complex until July, so hopefully I won't really have to worry about this... Now I'm thoroughly convinced I need to move into a house/duplex where I can get Grande (*vomit*) UVerse.

Wow that sucks at least for cable internet customers I wonder if Comcast will pick up this up I'm pretty sure they will. Well at least I'm not with Comcast nor Time Warner I saw this coming. They have talked about it a few years ago but, i didn't think they would actually do it...guess I was wrong.

    Sigh...

Anyone familiar with Windstream? I know one CF user here had a good review of it, but didn't answer all my questions and the reviews have been less than stellar:

But here are some "good news":

Yup, not so much as limiting the bandwith-hogs, but more to do with dealing with the emerging digital distribution and streaming media and the ISPs wanting a piece of that pie.

This plan may seem unpopular here, but this board is dominated by young men who consume a lot of internet resources. In the broader population, I don't think this plan will be so unpopular and I wouldn't expect a mass switch to a flat-rate provider forcing TWC to drop this plan. Only high-usage customers would switch, forcing the price for flat-rates up and discouraging low-usage customers from taking a flat-rate. I think the flat-rate is pretty much doomed.

As for the money-grab, I think that is too simplistic. TWC often has a monopoly on cable, but not on internet service. There may be some short-term margin-taking, but competition will keep prices down. The real difference will be a better match between how much product is needed and the price you pay. That's a more efficient model. (It also puts a market value on high-usage customers, and the industry may eventually become more responsive to the needs of this market segment, because of the greater ease with which you can assign an NPV to their desire for capital improvements.)

The price structure will discourage conspicuous consumption of data transfer, and change behavior and internet innovation. I don't see that as a bad thing. It will put a premium on maximizing the efficiency of your space and avoid waste in creating and transferring data products. That's a good thing. In the meantime, you won't be able to download as many movies as your otherwise might.

Baloney. It became a money grab the second they decided to ignore their own rhetoric in the wake of the 1996 telocommunications act.

It became downright ludicrous to think of it as anything but greed when they started running ads for "unlimited internet" even as they pocketed the taxpayer money that was intended to make that bandwidth available.

    **** them.

Lol, I can see the future now, all you have to do is open a small internet company right now, buy up loads of operating machines, wait until all the other companies have followed suit, then broadcast your company about how you are charging way less and with no rates, and every single online role playing gamer will flock to your company. Muahahahahah!

It looks like Time Warner is feebly trying to curb the mainstream shift towards online distribution. Dinosaurs avoiding the inevitable.

What you should be advocating is a pay-as-you-go system used for utilities such as electricity.

I'm not going to have a lenghty debate over this. I already did enough of that during the Comcast cap. You need and should realize that 40gb in this day and age is completely ridiculous.

What this is about is protecting their video, ppv business from companies like netflix and apple.

put a premium on maximizing the efficiency of your space and avoid waste in creating and transferring data products? What kind of "waste" do you generate from downloading/uploading data? Digital waste? d00d there's something called the recycle bin. it's on your desktop. Maximizing efficiency? I guess we should just go back to the caveman ages. they were a lot more efficient than we are. they had less power consumption, less toxic waste, and absolutely zero digital waste.
