If the steroid saga doesn't taint the players of this generation too badly in the HoF voting, Jeff's a lock for the Hall. I loved the guy when he was crushing homers in his prime, but I think I've admired him more for the way he's toughed it out in the last 4 years. Dude is a warrior in the true sense of the word. The old guard, guys like Clemens and Biggio and Bagwell, are a dying breed. When they retire, you won't see the likes of them again.
You really think so? Guys who play their hardest don't seem to be as transient as nostalgia makes it seem - there's some in every generation of every sport, IMO.
Hmmm so what the heck does the article mean? Retire or No Retire? Meaning do we get to keep the money and use on a Agent that can perform.. Or get screwed more for the next two years with bags sitting on the side forever?
I don't just mean guys who play their hardest, I mean guys who provide leadership in the clubhouse and on the field, who stay with the same team their entire careers (not Clemens, but that was Boston's mistake), who work on their game in the offseason, who bust their ass on the bases, who sacrifice for the benefit of the team, who choose to play in extreme pain rather than go on the DL, who never see their name in the newpaper for anything off the field, and put up hall of fame numbers. Maybe I'm a sentimentalist, but yes. I think those are a dying breed. I don't think you could name half a dozen current, younger guys who meet that description.
Well, not NOW because that reputation doesn't typically get bestowed till some time later on in a player's career.
There is no doubt that folks like Bagwell can rightfully be called heros by those who choose. The literary mean of the word supports this and it should not even be a matter of debate at least in the simplest terms. The dictionary definition of hero does not restrict the word to only firefighters, soldiers, teachers, doctors or policemen (or their like). Athletes are heros as well - it is not that of a big deal.
I love JB, but it looks like he is close to the end. I will shed a few tears the day he hangs up his spikes, becuase he is a warrior and has played through more pain then alot of us will ever realize. I love the fact that he doesnt make excuses and has always been a silent leader. If he isnt able to perform for the rest of the year and is on the DL through the end of the year, is Drayton on the hook for his salary or does the insurance company pick up the tab?
It weakens his argument, but it does not strengthen your ridiculous point. Someone can do a poor job of defending a correct position. You have done a poor job of defending a ridiculous position.
It's a sad day indeed, but Jeff carried himself with class. We couldn't ask for a guy to represent our city, our team, and the game any better.Gold glover,460HR, and a true pro,Bags might not get in on the first ballot, but the Hall will usher him in with open arms. One of the last guys to play his career with the same team,Bags is symbolic of all that is good in our national pastime, and also, sadly the way our grand old game has changed forever.
Aren't you the guy who bet me that Bagwell would reach at least 90 RBIs this season? I think THAT strengthens my point.
