Why in the world would you want to visit Ontario? And I used to live in Riverside County...

My brother dragged me to In-N-Out when I was in California and I wasn't that impressed. The burger was okay but the fries were limp and I didn't like the peanut oil they fried them in.

Peter's Drive Inn in Calgary had the best fast food burgers ever, although rumor has it that ownership changed and so did the flavor. In Houston, Burger Tex is the place to go - great burgers, and awesome fries and onion rings too.

Just to be clear, when people talk about In-N-Out Burger being good they are not just talking about how it tastes. I try to eat at In-N-Out every time I make it to California and I like their burgers but I don't necessarily think they are super special. However, In-N-Out burgers are very fresh and, as fast food goes, they are made with really good, quality ingredients. It's probably the only fast-food chain where you don't have to block your mind of what you are actually eating because you know that everything is very high quality.

    Native Texan here...

I think In-N-Out makes a great fast food burger. I like Whataburger somewhat.
In Austin, real "fast food style" burgers can be had at:
    Top Notch
    Dan's
    Fran's

In the Texas hill country, you can enjoy a Storm's burger in Lampasas, Marble Falls, Burnet and Hamilton. They own all.

I also want to make it known that I don't care for "gourmet" type burgers at all. Here I'm referring to any burger that includes a patty of greater thickness than 1/2". I am also including anything from a "steakhouse" or any of those suburban-chain-excuses-for-a-restaurant (i.e. Chili's, TGIFriday's, Bennigan's, Applebee's, etc.).

A hamburger includes a relatively thin, fried (or sometimes "flame broiled") beef patty, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles, and some form of sauce (could be mustard, ketchup, Sriracha or -- for those unfortunate souls who tolerate the stuff -- mayonnaise). Cheese can be added to this to make a "cheeseburger." I will also tolerate bacon. That's it.

    Carry on.

If he does, it would be a fairly recent acquisition

When I first discovered the place in college in 83, it was owned by some guy named Barry. He opened one right next to SJC-Central, then a few years later opened one up near the hospital (used to be Bayshore, think it is a Methodist affiliate now) on Spencer.

I still get by for a burger when Im in that area at lunchtime, but am unsure of the current ownership.

I *might* agree with you in that regard when it comes to bought burgers, but when I get a few pounds of ground chuck and make my own patties, they are most certainly over 1/4 thick you get from alot of burger places....and ftr flame broiled is best, forget frying them...yuch.

IF you are grilling em up in the backyard, and they arent over 1/2 thick...you gonna have some dry-ass burgers.

    Texas style grilling/smoking FTW ;)

Whataburger has a much better selection than In N Out. You have the whatachicken, whatacatch (fish), honey bbq chicken strip sandwich, A1 Thick and Hearty Burger, etc. Plus, Whataburger puts mustard on their burgers, unlike that drippy sauce from In N Out. Whataburger also has a full breakfast menu that totally rocks too.

I am happy to report that after trying this "Gourmet Mexican Food" establishment that many of the locals suggested, it was total crap compared to our average tex-mex. It's not that the food was any different, it was pretty much the same as your normal tex-mex....it just wasn't good. It was like getting something not as good as Taco Cabana but paying El Tiempo prices for it. They wanted to charge us an extra $5 for splitting a huge meal. WTF?

In-N-Out is overrated. I'd rather have a Whopper.

Ok, that does clear things up. Yeah, they were fresh. But after hearing people rave about them, fresh and hot wasn't going to cut it. And I need good fries to go with my burger.

Yes, Barry used to own the business many years ago. The Barry's you visit, is there a big fish tank next to the counter now?

I admire your candor and value your honest opinion and I shall put In-N-out on my bucket list.

    Thanks for posting.

I just got back from LA about two hours ago.

The first time ultimately needed a second time to confirm the results and the verdict is in: In-N-Out Burger is FAR superior to Whataburger.

Everyone knows In-N-Out is better than Crapaburger.

But I think Five Guys burgers and fries gives In-N-Out a run for their money.

I tried two this past week, one in Manhattan and the other in Queens.. Both were AWESOME. For 5 dollars and change, a much better quality burger than BK or Mcdonalds.

You can't compare Whataburger to In-n-out. A fairer comparison would be Carls Jr./Hardees.

I went to Uni high in Irvine and went to UCR for college.
