You consider beastiality, pedophelia, and incest as mere SEXUAL ORIENTATIONS????????

Do you read anything other than the Bible?

Are you comparing consensual adults marrying each other with incest, pedophelia and bestiality? That's just a wee bit of a stretch...

A powerful post, rhester. Of course parents should stay together for their children, unless things are bad beyond the pale. As someone who's been married for 27 years, and waited until he was 40 to start his family (with a little help from my wife... ;) ), I can tell you that we had our ups and downs, most before we ever had our children. Having had them, and seen friends destroy their marriages for seemingly absurd reasons (seen from outside, at least), I can understand that working through the tough times can ultimately bring great rewards.

That's not what I was talking about, however. It's the abusive relationships, physical and mental, which I've seen that concern me. Sometimes it is better for both the parent being abused, and the children who are likewise abused by being in the middle of the situation, if not an intentional target, to just move on, in my opinion. And that can be very difficult to do.

"Why can't someone marry his daughter who's in the 2nd grade?"

Uh, maybe becuase a 2nd grader isnt a legal adult?

It is amzing the stupidity that comes to the defense of Prop 2.

At least my vote against prop 2 will be cancelling out someone who is dumb enough to use that analogy.

    RocketMan Tex and rhadamanthus-
Yes, but that is a perspective to consider.
All of those are prohibited in the Bible. As a moral reference point using the Bible to put them together is not uncommon in society. At least it used to be that way.

I wasn't comparing anything, just grouping.

Incest between consenting adults happens, bestiality between consenting adults/animals happens. And in the case of pedophilia; well I hope it just angers all of you to think about it.

Don't be so high and mighty. There could be as good a case that all of these are just sexual orientation from those who make this their lifestyle.

Homosexuality used to be against the law. There very well could come a day that all the above are legal. Don't underestimate the heart of man.

The reason I posted that is because when someone says homosexuality is morally wrong they are considered insensitive, unloving, homophobic etc etc

Oh what a few years difference makes.... in both the past and the future.

i think what they're saying is that it prevents them from having those rights BY OPERATION OF LAW. or, in other words, automatically having those rights just be being "married" or "united" or whatever...because under current law, they can not be "married" or "united."

this is a STATE amendment you're voting on. the counties in the state are charged with carrying out elections. so the information you're seeing is on a county website..but it's information about the state referendum.

And what moral authority have you used to decide that pedophilia should be illegal or that a consenting adult and a consenting child is not just as valid a consent as two adults.

What are you using as your moral basis for this?

Under the law, there is no such thing as a consenting child.

Also, I was just about to post that I was glad to see a discussion revolving around homosexuality that didn't include references to beastiality and/or pedophilia and and by doing so attempt to group consensual sex between two non-related adults with animal rape and child rape. I shouldn't have gone to get my tires balanced, I guess.

Nevermind that straight people engage in sodomy as well. This whole slippery slope of homosexuality is just appaling. Comparing the love between me and my SO (two consenting adults!) to pedophilia or bestiality is terrible.

(This isn't directed at you, rehester)
What happened to the evils of interracial couples? That whole collapse of society thing sure was awful! Oh, wait. That didn't happen. And homosexuals won't destory marriage or cause the collapse of civilization as we know it.

I voted against the amendment. Regardless of what I think, it is wrong for the state to engage in legalized bigotry, period.

It came across like 'comparing' my fault, I really was trying to group them as being prohibited in the Bible. I certainly don't compare them.

They all are equally prohibited in the Bible. So you know where I am on sodomy. I am not against gays. I don't get political with the issue either. Lying and stealing are also prohibited in the Bible.

If you think bestiality should be illegal, don't find too much fault with me if I think sodomy is wrong. Especially when I base my beliefs on Bible scriptures.

Yeah, I know it's a state amendment. What I mean is... when you say that current law provides these rights to gay spouses, are you referring to current city/county law or state law?

they are state laws. the insurance thing isn't really law at all...well, maybe it's contract law. but you can name any one to be a beneficiary of your insurance policy because it's your contract with the insurance company.

    Distinction:

Lying and stealing harms another person. Loving someone does not. As such, in this case the morals of the bible, while fine by me, do not belong as legislation in what is supposed to be a secular government.

The "harms another person" test is not always completely applicable, I know. That being said, laws generally are written with the intent to maintain a fair and just society. In this case, the legislation is intended solely to restrict a group, i.e., to unfairly single them out.

Not everyone is christian in america, or believes the same version of christianity. Legislating a particular viewpoint with no other motivation then "the bible says so" is unconstitutional and just plain bigoted.

When I originally made my retraction, it occurred to me that you may have been referring to local laws, and that the prop (being part of the state constitution) may overrule the local laws (which would have been good for gay rights). In which case I would need to retract my retraction.

But since you're saying that they're state laws, I'll have to retract my retraction that retracts my first retraction.

I know this is a tangential topic, but is homosexuality explicitly prohibited in the Bible? (and if so, does the prohibition still apply today? I'm looking at you you crazy multi-fabric wearing people!)
