I wore contacts for over 40 years... the hard type, my eyes being too bad for soft lenses when they came out. I just had cataract surgery, and my eyesight is 20/20, for the first time since I was a kid. It's amazing. My vision before the surgery, before the cataracts, was 20/400.

Doesn't help you any, but I felt like sharing my experience. :)

    Note to grandpa...;)
Nice being able to see isn't it? I lost my glasses a few years ago and never bothered to replace them. Then finally I had had enough and went to the eye doc a few months ago and got my glasses again. Jesus it was like my eyes suddenly went into Hi Def.

Hey, I know just how you feel. It's a trip! I've never been able to see when I woke up without putting my "eyes" in, because my glasses were like coke bottles... just wouldn't touch them. So I had to stumble around (I'm good at it! ;) ) until my contacts were in. Could never take a nap. Now, it's like a whole new world. I just wish I'd had cataracts 20 years ago, if the results would be like this. To anyone that lives in Austin, and needs cataract surgery, I know an amazing surgeon.

Man I'm glad I have hard lenses...those soft ones seem like a pain in the ass.

I never want to go back to glasses again...and lasik is expensive and kind of scares me.

    :(

My eyes refused to comply last night, luckily my sister was awake and she helped me take them out. Amazingly, I can keep my eyes open when others are stabbing me in the eyes, but not my own. :(

Woke up late today so I didn't get a chance to do the magic contacts dance...so it's glasses for today. Tomorrow, we start again.

    everyone says it gets easier..

but for me, after 8 months or so, it didn't get all that much easier. So I got rid of em.

Also, the doc said it wouldn't be a big deal if I slept in them sometimes.. just to try not to and to not do it too often. Well, I did it a few times...and on one of the occasions, I woke up with an incredibly painful infection. So yeah, don't unless they're ACTUALLY made for it

All you guys are making a big deal about nothing. I just went to the eye doctor's today. For the past 2 years both my eyes have -5.5 power. Today my right eye got weaker and its now -6. He said it was up to me to change it. I said it's really not that big of a difference so I'm going to stick with both my eyes at -5.5 (it's just easier for me to keep all my contacts in one big ziplock). I told him the PureVision contacts he gave me last year were crap. They would tear so easily and I went through a 2 year supply in less than a year. 2 years ago he did give me a trial pair of Day and Nights and I just loved those so much. He had no problem prescribing those to me but he just said they were too expensive and he kept telling me to come back next year when they would be cheaper. Well, they never got cheaper and he kept telling me the same thing every year. While I got fed up with this, I really did appreciate his looking out for me. Usually doctors just want my money, but this man is a Good Samaritan. But I told him I'm not cheap and I want what's best for my eyes. I was able to find the Day and Nights online for only 38 bucks a box and have had no problems ordering online through Vision Direct since.

I don't have sensitive eyes and they never dry out. I never had any irritation or infections using my contacts whatsoever. Even when I was younger, I had soft contact that I was supposed to take out every night, but I never did and never had any problems. Either I got lucky with my eyes, or all you guys are doing something wrong.

BTW I go to Dr. Tou at Vision Source on Westheimer and Wilcrest. He's a great guy and his visits are so cheap (only $35)

I've never been able to wear soft contacts longer than about 8 hours a day, until I got the O2 Optix this year. Now I can wear these all day, and occasionally take a nap with them in. When I wake up though, I can feel them "sticking" to my eyes.

The newer generation of contacts flow a lot more air than before. The O2 Optix are pretty inexpensive, at less than $20/box. They are rated for 6 days of continuous use, but I never like to leave them in overnight.

The Night and Day contacts flow even more air. I might get them next time, even though I don't plan on wearing them overnight.

    Contacts are scary... period.

I doubt anyone has, but you guys seen that episode of Friends when what's-her-name (Jennifer Aniston) went to get her eyes checked out and kept on blinking at that astigmatism machine?

I'm just like that.. I freak out when Anything gets close to my eyes. Luckily my vision isn't all that bad. I've been wearing the same lenses on my glasses since 7th grade and I'm now on my 4th year of college.

    Is that bad?

Piece of cake for me, you'll get used to them. Just don't try to take them out if they are dry and stuck to your eye. You should be able to pinch them with your fingers (not the nails), and pull them off easily.
Putting them in, I take the middle finger of my left hand and hold the top eyelind down. I use the middle finger of my right hand and hold the lower eyelid down. The contact is in my right index finger, and you simply put it on. If done right, it'll stick. Make sure they aren't inside-out as well.

I don't trash them nearly as often as "recommended". Two weeks? Psshhh...try several months for me. No problems, and the doc knew it last time I went, and didn't say anything. No scratches on the eyeball, no adverse affects. Keep your money.

Here's an easy way to take off contacts. Move the lens halfway below your eye then just pluck them out. Usually I get some contact solution on my fingres and put it in my eye to get rid of the stickiness. I do this because Im scared of touching my retina?/eye with my fingers and this way the contact isn't stuck on my retina/eye when I take it off.

    You watch Friends...*snicker*

Heh, My eyes will not allow my fingers to come anywhere near them. Someone else though? Sure, stab my eye.

That's actually helpful to me; I had a detatched retina years ago and some surgery to fix it up, but my vision in that eye is still like 20/200 without a contact in. I was really hoping it would be like new after the surgery, but contacts make it good enough I guess.

However, they mentioned I had developed a minor cataract in my eye from the surgeries but didn't think it was anything to deal with at the moment. SO... you give me hope that maybe when I have the cataract surgery maybe the vision will go back to like normal... thanks! :)
