I had it done about 30 years ago, and it involved about 30 FEET of gauze packed up into my nose, and god-awful pain, for which I was given something worthless, like Tylenol #3. They break your freakin' nose. I should have sued the surgeon, because he sprayed cocaine up my nose (I'm not kidding... pharmaceutical grade) and told me that if I could breath better and my pounding headache was better, then the operation was for me. After 3 visits, I was sold. (I would have bought anything by then! ) What a racket. I couldn't smell anything for 6 months afterwards. Thank goodness, my sense of smell returned. My real problem? Allergies. I started getting shots for them, and that's what helped, not the stupid operation. Eventually, I moved to Austin, which cured that. I'm sure that if you need this done, DoD, they must have improved medical science by now, even for someone at your advanced age.
They break your nose and re-set it. I'm glad I had all three done at the same time. I was in the hospital overnight with a ton of gauze shoved up my nose. During the surgery, they stitch plastic supports to either side of your septum. Gauze came out the next day before I got released. Plastic stayed stitched up in there for 8-10 days. No black eyes. Plastic was removed by the doctor in his office. Once he took it out, he told me to breathe through my nose. I told him "so this is how normal people breathe!" The only thing I noticed afterwards was that my singing changed a little bit (suddenly I didn't sing as "nasally" as I had before). That, and I wasn't falling asleep during meetings in my office any more, because I was getting great sleep at night.
See what I am telling you...? Next: my peepee. OUCH I need to have my septum fixed as well... I snore like a wino in Houston.
I need to get this done one day, my nasal breathing is horrible. For some reason I am very freaked out about the gauze up the nose. People tell me you feel like you are drowning when they remove it. Is it really that bad?
It's bad, but I can think of worse things. It's a little painful. Your eyes will probably tear up. But it isn't like drowning. And, if you've been diagnosed with sleep apnea, the operation is worth it.
