Wow, this and the subsequent posts about "gypsies" are shockingly racist. First, the appropriate term is Romani or commonly the subgroup Roma, and second, like any group of people they should not be judged by the actions of a few reprobates.

Imagine replacing the word Gypsy here with the "n-word", or chink, spic, kyke, etc. and it should be obvious that such a post would not be acceptable.

And why is it words like chink, spic, and kyke flow so smoothly off your tongue but you choke on the "n-word"?

Because the board censors the word ******. Perhaps your comment would better be directed at Clutch.

You *may* have a lawsuit against the metro. Many states require a heightened duty of care from transportation companies in general. (if you were so inclined, you could look into that). This is not legal advice though =) Just a suggestion, but so far your damages seem small so its probably not worth it (unless you find out you have physical injuries later down the road)

    Racist? Please.

    Wiki:
    "Gypsy may refer pejoratively...."

Looks like the jury is still out.

    Nonsense.

This could have gotten ugly. Since the thieves happened to be black, this could have turned into a racist thread against all black people.

Instead, we turned it into a racist thread against gypsies, a persecuted minority numbering in the few million (mostly overseas) who had nothing, I repeat nothing, to do with the crime committed against the OP.

Didn't see that one coming; a completely unexpected turn of bigotry. To which I say: good job, internets, good job.

Really, a collective pat on the back all around.

This city has gone down the toilet ever since the mob in their anger turned to a man they didn't fully understand...

Are you certain that the may is modifying pejoratively and not refer? For example, here is the wiki for Caller

The Roma I have talked to did not want to be called Gypsies. The Roma that my friend worked with in Bulgaria did not want to be called Gypsies. Gypsy is an exonym that is disfavored by the people it refers to. Here is the wiki entry that uses Gypsy as the example of exactly this phenomenon.

Regardless of whether the term has been recognized as a blanket pejorative, YOUR usage certainly was racist, unless somehow your concluding statement, "Gypsies. Eff 'em." is based on some experience with all Roma or at least a sufficient sample to make a statistically valid claim that they are all worthy of contempt.

Congrats on your attempt to justify your racism with the defense that some people think it is okay to use the term Gypsy. In fact, if you just had a story about an individual of Romani descent in which you called them a Gypsy I would have merely pointed out that the term has been disfavored. It was clear that instead you were making blanket declarations disparaging to the entire people. That is why it was racist.

Good points, except that with the other groups you list, the stereotypes have never held true for every "n-word, chink, spic, kyke etc." I deal with, whereas every encounter we've had with these gypsy families... who boy. It's like they go above & beyond to live up to expectations. They're the ones we see the least of, yet the only group we have to proactively "discourage" doing business with.

Also, regarding proper terminology, I just noticed the red squiggly line appears under Romani, but not under gypsy. So who knows- these PC terms keep changing so often even our technology can't keep up lol.

So if someone has only had bad experiences with Chinese people (all of them have been sly and cunning cheats for example), you would be fine with them calling all Chinese people Chinks and assigning to Chinese people the characteristics they experienced?

Hey, at the end of the day if you honestly felt you're getting cheated by them (or anyone) that often <skeptical>, you are welcome to avoid doing business with anyone you choose, as we do with the gypsies. And I would not be right to get mad about that. It's your business, your money (& "You fool me you can't fool me again"). That is of course assuming they are actually "cheating", & not simply outsmarting/negotiating you, which let's get real is just part of business.

But like I said, in our business, gypsies are the only group that really live up to the hype. I don't think we've ever had a Chinese customer that wasn't honorable, super respectful, low maintenance, always pays on time- & not how you describe at all re: cheating etc.

Similarly with the terminology. And not that I worry about being PC too much, but...

Minnesota does not have many blacks or hispanics. Interestingly enough, our son (white) went to high school in a city that was around 98% white. His 4 best friends were 2 blacks and 2 hispanics.

    Huh?
We don't have many hispanics, but blacks? There's a lot of them, the Somalians. Not as much as Houston, but still quite a bit. But people here are quite a bit nicer and actually do that sort of stuff described by judoka quite often from what I've seen.

It's a very common trick for a gypsie to throw a baby at you and then while you're distracted and trying to catch the baby... subsequently take your wallet.

Also they sometimes take the identity of dead people and use it for financial gain. I saw a documentary about it. It was called The Riches, and it was 100% factual and accurate.
