I guess we'll see just how far his loyalty to Rick Smith goes because by all accounts, Osweiler is Smith's guy. If he continues to be the worst starting quarterback in the entire league, Rick's seat in the owner's suite should be blazing hot.
Replace mediocre with conservative and you've nailed it. What are we expecting, Jerry Jones style risks from our straight laced owner?
Where are these accounts? Never heard that he was Smith's guy .. . . . hell they didn't even meet before signing him Rocket River
I have no idea, and I'm not sure I really care. Look... the Osweiler signing may very well go down as a colossal mistake - it's certainly off to a rocky start. And if he doesn't get better, I have no problem whatsoever with heads rolling because of it. BUT... I will always defend the decision. I completely understand why they did it, and I think they managed it perfectly, in terms of the contract. It's essentially a two-year audition - they hedged their bet; it was smart, given the circumstances. And if he turns it around, they have him on a reasonable contract in years 3 and 4. Fans get so caught up in silly things - like bringing Ed Reed up three years later - Ed Reed, in the grand scheme of things, had 0.0 impact on this franchise. He was an over the hill cancer they jettisoned quickly. Why does anyone care about Ed Reed? Every team makes mistakes; no team is perfect. I, like everyone else here, am 3,000,000 miles away from the inner workings; what I can see is an owner who seems to strike the right balance between patience and urgency, and has opened his wallet repeatedly to try and make the team better. To me, he's been more unlucky than prohibitively bad.
He hired Dom Capers and Charley Casserly when the franchise was formed. Hard to find more experience than that. Also guys like Kubiak, Wade Phillips, and Romeo Crennel all had a ton of experience when hired. The one guy that I question is Rick Smith. The fact that he has such a close personal relationship with the McNair family could be a problem. My feeling is that McNair allowed Casserly to make almost all football decisions in the early days of the franchise. When the team failed to show much improvement , I think McNair decided to take a much more active role in the big football decisions. McNair hired Rick Smith and gave him a title of GM, but I think McNair may be making many of the traditional GM decisions. We don't really know, but that is my guess. I don't really care who makes the decisions, I just want them to be good decisions.
I don't think Rick has any guys anymore. He's learned by now that it's easier to keep your job if you give the coach all the control and then blame it all on him afterwards. If McNair ever hired a consulting firm to vet his organization, Rick Smith would have been fired years ago for being a redundant empty suit.
He gets a lifetime pass because Texans fans wouldn't even exist if not for him taking down the heavy favorite LA.
Houston was not the first choice LA was. They could not get a deal together for a stadium. Houston was just lucky. So i guess it is better to be lucky than good.
No accountability has ever been applied to the GM, McNair's direct hire (along with his worthless son's). The criticisms are very specific and you are nothing but a wind-up, suck-up toy for McNair.
McNair makes the media and fans think he wants to win, but he really just wants to keep the turnstiles turning and count his millions. He is more of a meddler than he makes people think he is I guess no one remembers the Ed Reed fiasco.
Actually, Kubiak was originally hired as the GM/Coach. He himself hired Smith the year after, to be a cap manager and help start the process of insulating himself against all criticism for personnel moves (pioneered by Belichick).
Fake nice guy with clear agendas. Worst owner in the city. Would like Les and Jim buy the team from him and change the stupid name.
