Maybe its just that one song I don't like, although I do like some of his music, I like the first "Trill" Album.
So since they were the originals to talk about crack, p***y, money, and weed that makes them better??

    Devin the dude...
now we all know, all he talks about is p***y, Weed, and Alcohol

The only song I like from Chamillionaire would probably have to be "Think I'm crazy"

I might be biased since I like Rock more.

you know i think part of it is that those 'real rappers' are lazy. The hustlers are out there every day handing out CD's and getting their stuff out there while the 'real rappers' are at home, on their high horse.

Seriously, how many times have you been solicitied to buy a CD by some kid in a shirt that looks like a dress selling some comercial type crap.

I think their just not being ambitious enough

commercialism (probably has been said) has destroyed it. it's dumber than dirt now-a-days. At least the stuff that gets air time.

Don't get me wrong. I like Jay. He IS talented, but Eminem in his prime (Slim Shady LP & Marshal Mathers LP) IMHO was more innovative, focused, and flat-out original than any single release of Jay.

Jay's body of work might triumph Em's body of work, but talent evaluation is purely personal, and highly subjective.

I was thinking about that myself. Who knows, I wouldn't be able to live with myself though.

Sorry i gotta disect this by parts. You gotta go way further back than that album to know what i'm talking about, check out Too Hard to Swallow.

Yes. You're forgetting the most important element of rap, which is its reality. They were rapping from personal experience and all of sudden people are rapping about the same things 10 years later. They coppied them. Other groups respected them for that.

no argument there. Reefer and beer was kinda funny though.

that was a great song to me. There are quite a few i like on the other album too like morning and evening news. People who are more biased towards rock tend to enjoy lyrics more than any other aspect of rap, and neglect flow, style, and beats. Chamillionaire has great flow much better than alot of those underground rappers and he can write when he wants too. I put him above alot of the current rappers. I just can't get into some of these underground guys because flow is important to me. I think the guys like Lupe, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def are more popular because they have sick flow to go along with the lyrics.

Yeah those guys you mentioned, i think are cool.
I like Lupe, Talib, and Mos Def.

Lupe and Mos Def put a little bit of the rock element into their style, so that is probably what makes me like them.
    Talib has good flow.

I've always been a fan of hybrid stuff
    like rock-rap.

You guys ever heard of Hydroponikz?
    He's another good underground rapper.
    Also from NY.

it seems like the east coast and midwest (chicago) has a more lyric style.

Hydroponikz ft. Chester Bennington(screamer guy from Linkin Park, no screaming in this song though)

Most people wont believe where this is from.
If you know who its from, this is wayy before their style changes.
    Rap, Rap-Rock, Nu-Metal, Alternative Rock/ Hard Rock

Its weird that the best defenders of rap say it's poetry but they themselves would never be caught dead reading poetry.

Rhyming is not an art. It's a Denny's place mat.

I think you actually have to be a gangster( or used to be one) in order to determine what "real" gangsta rap is.Dancing with the Devil is a nice little song but what exactly makes it ganster rap? Sounds more like just regular hip hop to me

As far as Southern rappers, it sounds to me that you only listen to what the radio spins. What you hear from Bun B now is nothing how he used to be in UGK. Pretty much he sold out for the money/recognition because he saw what the other Htown rappers where accomplishing.
If you want to know what real gangsta rap is, at least from the south, check these out.
    Geto Boys
    Street Military
    Aggravated
    Eightball & MJG
    Ruthless Juveniles
    Esg
    Blac Monks
    Scarface
    Ganksta NIP
    UGK
Somehow I think "real" gangsta rap is not your thing.Especially if you you like rap/rock hybrid songs.

Biggie AND Tupac both collectively killed rap. Two all-time great artists who I love to listen to... they made rap a big deal, and consequently, commercialized the game. You do the math.

Rap is a verb ;) . Hip Hop is alive, you just gotta step away from the radio lol.

Lupe, Kanye, Blackstar, etc. are awesome, but if you're looking for something else, check out: Little Brother, Far East Movement (Asian American Rappers ftw!), Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5, Royce da 5'9", and J Dilla aka Jay Dee.

And of course, there's always the classics like ATCQ, Wu-Tang, Common, Big Pun, De La Soul, Mobb Deep, and other great old school ****...

P-Diddy, Puffy, Puf, whatever he calls himself these days was the begining of the end of rap/hip hop with his shiny bling bling, good beats but no lyrical substance rap. Yeah it was catchy but I think lead to "studio" rappers being created by record label execs. Instead of making music from the heart, they make cookie cutter/formulaic music with little substance that appeals to the masses who only care about beats and catchy hooks rather than have actual lyrics which mean something.

I was thinking about this last night, you have to also give puffy credit for bringing biggie along which helped bring east coast hip hop back (along with wu tang). for as much damage as he caused, he also contributed to the glory days

What killed rap? When Tupac and Eazy E died. For me anyway.

Soulja boy is putting it more into the ground.

Kanye is wack ... he has no originality since most of his music that gets played is sampled... and he is probably the most overrated rapper, lyrically.

The problem is that most people who listen to rap really don't care for the stuff that's on tv/radio. I can be with my little cousin and as a teenager he doesn't really like it, his neices and nephews are just barely below teenage years and they don't like most of it, either.

That's the part i don't get. Most people don't like this crap. Most people will listen to the major guys cause you CAN get something from them but they hate all these cookie cutter guys who seem to be making so much money. I know its a kids thing but i've never even come accross a kid who actually like Soulja Boy.
