I didnt say there werent any social rappers out there. Ive been a big fan of mos def and talib for a while now. I'm just saying for the mainstream, the songs you can dance to are the ones that are played the most. They're club bangers and people want to hear that.

lol. you've never heard a Timbo beat

It's a shame that there are so many people who say rap sucks. You've probably only listened once, and you didnt listen to a good rapper. Thats the problem. You havnet listned to Run DMC. You havent listened to Lupe....but you listened to Lil Wayne and you based your opinion on that.

there's either casual rap listeners, listeners that look for substance, or listeners that want to shake their ass and go to a club and listen to it. Unfortunately the ones that buy the CDs are the ones that don't care what they say, they just want a beat to get stupid with.

depends on your definition. some people say rap is the lyrical content, while hip-hop is the cultural movement.

i draw my distinction between as:
rap = club rap, processed beats, vulgarity/drugs/death as shock value and entertainment, the less-educated, yet talented son of hip-hop
ex: souljah boy, b.g., jermaine dupri, ja rule, lil jon, ying-yang twins, mike jones, juvenile, 50 cent, akon, t-pain

hip-hop = the grand-daddy, always evolving, incorporating jazz, soul, funk, rock, politics, art, and poetry.
ex: talib, mos def, jurassic 5, lupe fiasco, common, the roots, nas, sugar hill gang,

there are your in-betweens that bridge, like jay-z, kanye west, and wu-tang clan...
i don't think you're really listening to the right stuff if you go so far to discount rap and hip-hop so generally.

It's interesting that 4 out of 6 of those rappers you mentioned happen to be Muslim...

you're right. Jay Z sold out. He was smart. He started coming out with shake your ass in the club songs. Nas will always be real. Thats REAL rap. You wont see it on TRL. The white girls wont eat it up in the club. They dont wanna hear Nas cuz he talks about real stuff. Jay used to be that way, but he's a smart businessman. The REAL rap, you wont hear on the radio or see on TV. When is the last time you saw Nas or KRS on TRL? I'll go as far as saying that YOU MIGHT...YOU MIGHT see them on BET...

I'm glad people are finally tryin to separate (or be aware of) the different kind of rap music that is out there.

Here's another racist story (I have plenty, just ask for them)
I once said in front of a crowd of co-workers (they were black) that 50 Cent was the new Tupac, just to see how they would respond. They took offense and I guess that's a good thing? Hahaha.

The Lyrics is what is killing rap music though because come on, do we listen to these lyrics?

Omg! I have been saying that to my friends forever. I'm glad finally someone agrees. Almost all comedians use racism.

what's funny is i still haven't figured out if you really dislike the current state of rap or if you never liked it to begin with.

When did I say I didn't or did like it? I am just agreeing with the opening post. I think it's nothing but little kids singing three words over and over and over and over and over...

What happened to REAL LYRICS?!?!? :( Run DMC, Ice Cube, heck, I'll go as far as saying VANILLA ICE! Weak, but REAL Lyrics... not the same verse 500 times in the same song... you know?

    an exercise in lyricism:

lupe fiasco's "american terrorist" and "kick, push"...

put those up against any radio country or rock song and tell me they're not well thought-out. sure, they're not "masters of war" or "baba o'riley", but they're poignant enough to be worth listening to.

I guess i got confused when you kept dogging the rappers. I have alot of family members who made beats (low budget stuff $500 here and there) and my brother used to DJ so i am really into beats. In that respect rap has advanced but the lyrics are a problem.

I don't even mind the Soulja Boys of the world cause we all know thats kids stuff but i am more angry at the Young Jeezy's of the world. Its not even about just the lyrics to me. I just want to see someone who can be themselves. I find it hard to believe that 90% of these guys' lives is about dancing in clubs and poppin' guns.

Rap has followed the same track as rock (and any other popular music you might hear on the radio) to the extent that corporate radio controls everything with the whole 'find me someone who already sounds just like someone else who is hot right now.'

The result with rock was cookie-cutter, no-talent bands getting crammed down everyone's throats to the extent that you couldn't (and still can't) really tell them apart.

The same has happened with rap: same beats, same subject matter, same attitude getting regurgitated over and over and over.

Its sad, really. The industry does nothing to support creativity and originality. It is the snake that is slowly devouring itself, and I can't wait for it to finally die.

    MONEY!!
    Like most music
their are ARTIST and THOSE CHASING THE DOLLAR

when Big Time Studios started handing out BIG TIME MONEY
and using the Music Machine to promote their acts

most folx running in here talking about RAP SUCKS
are so full of ***** and full of hypocracy

They the same ones whining about NickleBack getting so much airPlay
it is the same d8mn concept

Music Industry is looking for what makes money
    and
when a new style/etc comes up . . makes dollars
two days latter 50 folx doing that style and it becomes played and generic

The industry is about making MONEY not GOOD MUSIC
    MONEY!! MONEY!! MONEY!!!

So let's all stop acting Brand New around here
and acknowledge the real *****ing deal

Rap went down hill when control was wrestled from the roots
in place in the hands of Mega corporations trying to make money
by FAKING AUTHENTICITY rather than having true AUTHENTICITY

Rap is Crap because it is full of generic Money chasers
and few artist. . . Money chasers are a dime a dozen
and easier to find and promote than True Artist

BOOM there it is in a Nutshell . . .
Music Industry is rolling out generic rappers
like it rolls out Generic Rockets
like Generic *ss Music in general

so . .. ONCE AGAIN .. .Stop hopping around the reality
with a bunch of bit peices of bull*****

MONEY + CORPORTATIONS = taking the same route and trying to constantly make money by being 'safe' and finding 'safe moneymaking music rathet than trying to be innovative . ..cause innovative MAYNOT make money!
