Sounds more like they are on a mission to cash in on this Ashlee Simpson controversy while they still can. No doubt this whole debacle will be good for ratings. At least until the next new thing hits.
If she's smart she'll pop a boob out so everyone will forget about her voice. She reminds me of Pat Benatar.
Pat Benatar can sing. They had Ashlee do a song where the band was very loud and there was more shouting than singing. The kids that are the target audience will probably eat it up and think she's proven her talent.
That was painful. I'd heard she was terrible when "performing" live, but I didn't think she'd suck that much. How in the hell does the public tolerate this dreck?
I don't buy this "backing track" story at all. She got caught, and this is the best excuse they could come up with. Not only did she get busted on that song, the fact that the vocals were from the previous song proves that she lip-sync'ed it, too. And I don't buy the "voice strain" excuse, either. What did she do - record and master the vocal track, and have it queued up, hooked into the sound system, connected to the drummer's trigger, and ready to go, but only to be used just in case she couldn't sing? I don't buy that either. And obviously they had recorded the vocals for TWO songs, and acidentally played the wrong one. Let's face it: she's got 'em ALL recorded. If her voice was strained, why not have her band play an instrumental song (or are they not talented enough?). Nope - I believe she's a talentless, lip-sync'ing hack who got busted. -- droxford
Uh...they were lip syncing.... Holy Jesus, that was freakin' awful!!! I'm not just saying that to be funny. That was just excruciating! She needs to leave the music industry and never come back. AWFUL!
I would agree they were lip synching but they had this big dance number. After they ended, they announced the hosts of the show and were completely out of breath. So, I don't see how they were singing because it sounded perfect yet again. Or, maybe their just that good?
Ashley Simpson is on Radio Music Award, she said she was lip singing because she lost her voice hours before the show.
Just had to jump in about Destiny's Child I didn't see tonight's show, but I've actually gone to both the Astrodome and Reliant Stadium (Houston Rodeo both times) and watched them perform live, and they (well, at least Beyonce. "DAMN Dat gurl could sang!") have real talent. And yes, it was live, no lip synching.
Oh I know, don't want you to think I was aiming that comment at you. That was a general statement because some others were saying that use of double vocals isn't out there. Sorry about that Kelly. Anyone who's a fan of Steely Dan is a good man. Someone just brought up Pat Benetar. Unfair comparrison. Benetar was a classically trained opera singer if I remember correctly. Simpson is a no-talent hack.
Now shes blaming it on Acid Reflux. http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Music/10/26/ashlee.simpson.ap/index.html Acid Reflux sufferers like myself are highly offended.
I thought here song was awful. Not sure if shes trying to distinguish herself from her sister but I thought she was a blonde.....and that outfit
All this attention she's receiving could actually help her. She's doing the talk show circuit now to drum up sympathy. Ugh. God help us all.
This has to be the funniest quote of the year: "She has the talent; she's the real deal. She got sick but lived up to her commitment. She rocks." http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2004-10-25-ashlee-simpson-aftermath_x.htm Ashlee faces the music on vocal malfunction By Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY In the annals of the Simpson family's carefully crafted media ascent, Ashlee Simpson's Saturday Night Live debacle may be remembered as "the Howard Dean-scream moment." That's how Craig Marks, editor of music magazine Blender, describes the mishap that found the 20-year-old silently standing by as taped vocals for her hit Pieces of Me were cued in — while the band played the song that had been planned for that segment. Simpson had the chance to make a damage-control move by singing, in a performance heralded by NBC as live, on Monday night's Radio Music Awards. "Ashlee's rise has been as meticulously orchestrated as a presidential campaign," Marks says. "So there's a particular delight for some people in seeing her fall that way." Simpson, sister of Jessica, rose to instant fame after an MTV series chronicled the making of her debut album, which duly entered the chart at No. 1. To have the incident occur on a TV show "with a tradition of live musicians," Marks adds, "reinforces the idea some have of teen-pop being a sham." In an interview on Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM, Joe Simpson, who manages daughters Ashlee and Jessica, said his younger daughter has been suffering from acid reflux that can cause her vocal cords to swell. "Just like every other artist in America, she has backing tracks she pushes so that you don't have to hear her croak through a song on national television." He added that Ashlee had never needed the tracks before. Ashlee's producer, John Shanks, adds, "She has the talent; she's the real deal. She got sick but lived up to her commitment. She rocks." In truth, it's hardly unusual these days for singers — even those older and more respected than Simpson — to lean on modern technology. Producers can enhance tone and phrasing, and even fix the pitch of less-potent voices. "You can manipulate a not-very-good voice to make it sound like a very contemporary, engaging voice," says songwriter/producer Peter Zizzo, who has worked with Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Carlton. Zizzo uses such tools, he says, only "in keeping with the level of competence" of artists. Moreover, by layering additional recorded tracks on top of live vocals, even artists who publicly denounce lip-syncing can reap the benefits without committing the crime. "When you have big shows with a lot of dancing and action, they run tapes, for sure," says producer Ric Wake, whose clients have included Dion, Mariah Carey and Jessica Simpson. "If you're Celine Dion, you can't do that, but for other singers ... I won't name names, but they do."
The radio this morning played her interview clip and teased her because it sounded she said "acid reflex "
