One more pet peeve (sense we are really off track mecause). When you are trailling and on defense....with 2 TOs left and the clock is before the 2 minute warning, and don't use them before the warning. You save time by using them before the 2 minute warning. If you don't, the team runs it down to two minutes and then you start using TOs. You have already lost the 15 seconds or so of the two plays ran post the warning + the time it costs to get the TOs recognized after those plays. Secondly, if you have expired your TOs by 3rd down, while saving as much clock, often you can bait the offense into playing it safe with a run so that they at least expire as much clock as possible. Whereas if you have a TO left in your pocket, the opponent has already expired more clock, and knowing you have a TO anyway, is less worried about a 3rd down incompletion and will be more aggressive.
