Peculiar? Are you saying I have something against you or your view on race? Nomar went overboard, no doubt. But he's responding to your aggressive post and all I'm saying is to cool it before it gets worse. I can either ask nicely for posters to calm down or I can kick you both and be done with it.

Ugh... the Hangout. What a nightmare.

If a company profited off slavery , I think it should owe something to the ancestors of the slaves . If it didn’t , then it shouldn’t owe anything. No Ancestors are going to Joe White's house (who had nothing do with a company proftting off of slavery) and
asking for money from them are they ?

    Agreed.

And I love the "Hangout Boy" designation that Rocketman95 got. Reminds me of the "incoherent Column Writer" tag LHutz used to have.

Da: Don't come in behind Clutch going, "Yeah, Timing, you suck. You tell him Clutch!" It is weak to use Clutch as a shield to take a poke at the guy you disagree with and ignore the fact that Nomar was just as much of an instigator. You sound like a kid standing behind his older brother yelling at the bully who's been kicking your ass. :)

dc-rock: My ancestors were kicked out of Scotland (essentially) by James VI because of a clan fued. Should I sue the Throne of England for damages and loss of land, estimated current value to be around 10 trillion dollars?

Twould be kind of nice, now that I think of it... ;)

And the way I post, the titles could be interchangable.

    Ridiculous.

What kind of precedent does this set if successful? Does this mean that I can sue a company that my great grandfather worked for because they abused him as child labor capital?

    Absolutely f*ing ridiculous.

At first glance, I have no problem at all with this. Anything to take money from a big, evil company and place it in the hands of somebody that needs it more.

However, treeman is right in that if successful, the suit will lead to an avalanche of these kinds of cases.

Isn't there a law (forget the latin name for it) that says you cannot be responsible for something if, at the time you did it, the act itself was not against the law?

Nomar, I think your example is a bit of a reach. I don't know the specifics of your ancestors' situation, but I doubt it compares to the relocation and enslavement of 50 million Africans.

The sheer numbers alone make reparations a can of worms that not many are going to want to deal with. I don't see how it could possibly be done in a way that is fair for everybody--for the blacks, the native americans, whoever.

In a perfect world I wish it could be done, but I am pretty sure most judges won't let it get too far.

How are these companies in particular evil?

Keep in mind that one of them was formed in 1980. The connection to slavery is somewhere between nonexistant and virtually nonexistant.

The suing doesn't actually set a precedent, does it? I'm guessing this will probably be thrown out as soon as possible. And if the companies settle, then you can blame them as much as the people who bring the suits.

Jeff is totally right. Dakota needs to stop hiding behind admins to call other people out. Its weak and sounds like he is kissing ass.

Good call Jeff. Another rock solid, perfectly delivered post.

I'd have to agree with CBFC.

Dak is a glorified Andre Miller pimp, and is totally out of line.

what was this thread about again?

    ...

Oh yeah, slaveholding stocks are bad. Exceelllent.

I agree with Jeff also, this is why he's the Best Poster on this bbs.

Quit being a sissy Dakota and learn to fight without using Clutch as a shield...

I also agree. Dakota, you need to learn to standup for yourself without help from admins. If everyone in the world was like Jeff, the world would be perfect. Jeff is quite possibly the perfect human being. I know one thing for sure though; Jeff is the best poster on this BBS. I bet Jesus is jealous of Jeff, being that he is so perfect and all.

    You're all idiots. :)

DrewP: Was that supposed to be an insult because it felt like a compliment? Oh, well. I AM perfect so I'll assume you were just reminding everyone.
