I live in the East Village - I see helos & LGA approach traffic all the time - never little Cessnas or seaplanes.

Why not move the water runway south - by the old seaport?

The helo traffic would be harder to control I think.

...by the South street Seaport, right between the 3 bridges? well it would be exciting, that's for sure......

I said there were reports that the plane was doing acrobatics.

I just generally disagree with everyone immediately thinking that these things are tragic accidents when there are often elements of jackassery involved.

    From ESPN.com:

On Sunday, the day after the Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs, Lidle cleaned out his locker at Yankee Stadium and talked about his interest in flying.

He explained to reporters the process of getting a pilot's license and said he intended to fly back to California in several days and planned to make a few stops. Lidle disccused the plane crash of John F. Kennedy Jr. and how he had read the accident report on the National Transportation Safety Board Web site.

Lidle, acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies on July 30, told The New York Times last month that his four-seat Cirrus SR20 plane was safe.

"The whole plane has a parachute on it," Lidle said. "Ninety-nine percent of pilots that go up never have engine failure, and the 1 percent that do usually land it. But if you're up in the air and something goes wrong, you pull that parachute, and the whole plane goes down slowly."
    _____

Dude - that's just messed up.

You are being very insensitive to the situation and showing your jackassery right now. This was an accident. Why do you have to PROVE wrong doing? Why can't you just ACCEPT that it was an ACCIDENT! Have some compassion for his family and his 6 year old boy. Just thank God that no one else died. This could've been far worse.

The Seaport is south of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Move it south of that & allow landings & takeoffs only from & to the south, respectively.

Anyway, I've flown under plenty of bridges in that WWII flying game for my 360 - if I can do it, it must be a piece of cake for "professional" pilots. ;)

I was aware of the heliport in the east 20'2/30's, but planes coming in over the Brooklyn Bridge? in this day and age?

Channel 2 news right now is showing all the different plane and helicopter crashes that have happened on the East River. Seems that these accidents have been happening.

    Skepticism is not jackassery.

Also, I do feel sympathy for his kid & his family.

I have always been distrustful of private "professional" pilots and their little planes. Professional pilots are those who fly to earn their wages - not those who do it as a hobby.

Honestly - I think jackassery is going up in a private plane after a few dozen hours of instruction when you have a family at home.

Where's Fatty? I need someone to deflect here!

The parachute wouldn't work in this situation because they were not at a high enough altitude.

If you'd been paying enough attention to the story maybe you'd realize that he was with his flight instructor when it happened.

The seaport runs right into it, it's still way too close, plus that's at a "bend" in the river where ferry traffic comes through.

usually in the mornings if you jog around East River park you will see them on approach, I guess t is the Williamsburg bridge they come in lowest over.

    Lidle killed in Plane crash

    NEW YORK (AP)
A small plane carrying New York Yankee Cory Lidle slammed into a 50-story skyscraper Wednesday, apparently killing the pitcher and a second person in a crash that rained flaming debris onto the sidewalks and briefly raised fears of another terrorist attack. A law enforcement official in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Lidle an avid pilot who got his flying license during last year's offseason was aboard the single-engine aircraft when it slammed into the 20th floor of the high-rise on Manhattan's Upper East Side. And Mayor Michael Bloomberg said both people aboard were killed.

And that made what difference? These little planes are not maintained to the standards of those in commercial use.

The fact that Lidle was spouting off about a "parachute" saving his ass if & when the plane had trouble reeks of stupidity.

Yeah how dare he mention that he takes extra safety precautions that most GA pilots don't take....

By all accounts, the CR20 is built for safety & ease of use for beginners..hence the parachute which was revolutionary when it was launched.

I just read this whole thread and it is hilarious how bad people overreact 1st of all and assume the worst (terrorism) and then get on their high horse and call someone who just died in a tragic accident a jackass before they even know the facts.

Is this how you guys get yourselves through the day?

this is really pathetic. On the news it said that his plane was top of the line as far as saftey goes. If his plane had been messed up higher in the air, he could've used it.

Do you realize that statistically, you are more likely to die in a car accident than in a small plane accident, with your instructor on board?

The guy had every precaution possible in his plane. Sometimes things goes wrong. If that still pisses you off than I guess you must be the kind of person that believes that aircraft is "bad". Maybe they should just ban all planes. The guy died in a tragic accident. Can't you have any respect for the dead?

I don't think most of us ASSUMED it was terrorism, but when it happens some fear that it might be terrorism.

That is probably the result of 9-11. Before 9-11 people just assumed it was an accident, now many people consider the possiblity it could be terrrorism, but I don't think most people assume it is. just realize the possiblity.

However in this case, I didn't really think of terrorism once I saw that it was a small plane. It seemed unlikely. However, when I first heard a plane hit and didn't know what type of plane...... it crossed my mind as a possibility

Well try living in a city that you know has an "X" marked on its head by international terrorists. Then imagine hearing reports of a plane crashing into a high-rise condo.....what are your first thoughts?

Its kind of hard not to overreact, given where this is happening and what has happened here in the past.

As a former resident of "Tha Rotten Apple" who still has all of his family living in the Tri State area, you cant take anything like this lightly. I was told by a co-worker and immediately thought the worst and started calling the family back in Flatbush to check on their saftey. Thats when I learned the whole story....whew!

You know what....when you first hear reports of "acrobatics around high-rises" as Rocket G did, I think most here would say the same exact thing he did. Rocket G was simply "calling it like he saw it" based on those reports.

P.S. Rocket G....dont you know never to trust those first reports you first hear from the NYC media. See NY Daily News....you know, the the Sunday edition with Torre's mug and the word "OUT" plastered underneath.....yeah that was on point indeed!
