Brady downplays Ryan's slight, heaps praise on Belichick

Tom Brady skipped watching part of the New York Jets' playoff game and still couldn't leave football completely behind. The New England Patriots quarterback spent Saturday night in a Broadway audience at the play "Lombardi." He noticed many similarities between legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi and his own coach, Bill Belichick. With tickets he got before he knew who would be in the Saturday night game, Brady watched an actor play another outstanding coach. Of course, he checked his Blackberry from time to time for updates on the Jets-Colts game.

Jets coach Rex Ryan couldn't resist aiming another zinger at Brady. When asked Monday what he thought of Brady going to see "Lombardi" on Broadway instead of watching the Jets' game Saturday night, Ryan threw another jab.

"Peyton Manning would have been watching our game," Ryan said Monday with a huge grin.

Just last Thursday, Ryan said no one studies like Manning.

"I know Brady thinks he does," Ryan said then. "I think there's a little more help from Belichick with Brady than there is with Peyton Manning."

Brady shied away from any verbal spat, took the high road.

"Everybody's obviously entitled to their opinion," he said, "and maybe he's right. But I'll keep getting ready like we've done all year and get ready for Sunday night."

"I don't think anything people really say has bothered me -- good, bad or indifferent -- over the years.

"I get a ton of help from our coach," Brady added. "We have the best coach in the history of football."

Ryan says Jets-Pats tilt boils down to outdueling Belichick

"This is about Bill Belichick vs. Rex Ryan," the Jets' brash coach declared Monday. "There's no question. It's personal. It's about him against myself, and that's what it's going to come down to."

Ryan described last Saturday's game against quarterback Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts as "personal," too. After a 17-16 win set up this playoff matchup between the Jets (12-5) and Patriots (14-2), Ryan is letting everyone know that this time, it's really, really personal.

That 45-3 loss in Foxboro so angered Ryan that he took a game ball and buried it near one of the practice fields as the entire team watched.

Ryan added to it all a few months after he was hired in 2009, saying he didn't come to New York "to kiss Bill Belichick's rings." Ryan even took a shot at Brady -- although he insists that wasn't his intent -- while praising Manning last week, saying the Patriots quarterback "thinks" he studies as hard as the Colts star but doesn't.

Ryan understands how his comments could be taken as slaps at Brady, but "he took a shot at me by his antics on the field."

Antics? Ryan was asked if he meant Brady pointing at the Jets' sideline or looking at them after scoring.

"Just Brady being Brady," Ryan said vaguely. "I don't like seeing that; nobody does. No Jet fan likes to see that. And I know he can't wait to do it. He's not going to say anything publicly, but he does it. It's what it is. It's my job to get him out of the end zone."

Brady who? Jets coach Ryan calls Revis 'best player' in NFL

Sure, Tom Brady is great. So are Peyton Manning and Michael Vick.

But in Rex Ryan's always humble opinion, they pale in comparison to his All-Pro cornerback, Darrelle Revis.

"Quite honestly," the New York Jets coach said Monday, "he's the best player in football."

Revis held Indianapolis' Reggie Wayne to one catch for 1 yard Saturday night in New York's 17-16 wild-card playoff victory, a performance that frustrated the Colts wide receiver and earned unsolicited praise from his coach.

"That tells you how good Darrelle Revis is," Ryan said. "I know he's probably not going to win the Defensive Player of the Year award, but the impact he has is amazing."

Ryan lobbied hard last season for Revis to be selected as the NFL's top defensive player after a season in which he shut down elite wide receivers week after week. Revis has been at it again this season, but he lacks the gaudy numbers some cornerbacks have.

WTF is wrong with Rex Ryan? Revis "best player" in the NFL? Really? Damn, fatty pass the crackpipe!

Let me put this in perspective here, Brady will go down in history right next to Montana as the GOAT. Revis, on the other hand is really good, but come on he is not even a lock for Hall of Fame right now and you talk this kind of BS? As a matter of fact, Nnamdi Asomugha is just as good, if not better than Revis at shutting down receivers, but you don't hear his coach make such statements. Poll every single coach, gm, and owner in the league, ask them who would you rather have on your team right now, Brady or Revis? Most of them are going to laugh in your face and then call you an idiot.

Also, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick don't need extra motivation to whoop your ass AGAIN. Remember 45-3?

Rex has been talking smack since day 1 with the "kissing the rings" comments and continues to spew nonsense. Be a damn professional and let your team win before you start going off on these rants.

Also, if anyone should be talking smack then it's John Harbaugh or Tom Coughlin, the only two coaches to beat Brady and Belichick in the last 4 years but those guys mind their business and move on. Rex hasn't won a damn thing in the playoffs not even a Superbowl appearance, why does he even get that much press? Attention w**** much?

I hope Brady score 5 TDs by halftime and runs up the score while pointing to your double-chinned face on the sideline. Don't like it? Then stop Brady and quit b****ing like a damn loser!

That Manning quote seems more of a shot a Peyton and his micro managing of the Colts offense. See Peyton makes ALL the calls and that's why he sux donkey balls in the playoffs. Brady lets the OC make the calls and he just goes Tom Brady on that ass.

This is starting to remind me of Jerry Glanville (surprise...) taking shots at Sam Wyche's Bengals. How did that work out for good ol' Jerry?

61-7.

Bengals recovered an onside kick in the 4th quarter while up 45-0. Wyche called a timeout with 21 seconds left in the game so he could kick a field goal while already ahead 58-7. LOL.

After the game, Wyche had this to say on running up the score:

They've got their tails tucked between their legs and they're going home, which is just the way it should be. They're the dumbest, most undisciplined, stupid football team we've ever played. We don't like their team. We don't like their people. And when you get a chance to do it, you do it. I wish it was a five-quarter game.

I hate the Patriots but I have to admit watching New England take a huge dump on the Jets put a smile on my face. Mind you, this was before the Steelers embarrassed themselves by allowing this fraudulent group to beat them on their home turf. Now, I'm just intent on seeing somebody finally putting this team in their place.

Love him or hate him, Rex Ryan is entertaining as hell. I wish more coaches were like him. There has been a serious dearth of characters in the NFL, especially in coaching positions, since T.O. and Ochocinco became irrelevant.

I agree - he seems to do and say everything with a sense of humor. He's like the Mike Leach of the NFL, adding storylines and personality. Of all the teams in the NFL, the Patriots seem like the one that needs and uses bulletin board material the least. I doubt any of this affects how the game plays out at all.

Now, it's really personal.

Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, taking the baton from Rex Ryan, who criticized Tom Brady's post-touchdown "antics" earlier this week, ripped into the Patriots quarterback in a profanity-laced rant Tuesday, calling him an "ass----," and claiming he hates him.

Ryan set the tone by saying it was just "Brady being Brady," referring to his finger-pointing to the Jets sideline after his touchdown pass gave the Patriots a 38-3 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter on Dec. 6 in Foxborough on the way to New England's 45-3 humiliation of the Jets in their first-place showdown.

Cromartie, in his first year with the Jets after four years with the Chargers, backed up Ryan Tuesday when he was asked by the Daily News if he's ever seen Brady pointing after the Patriots score.

"We see that a lot. He does it a lot," Cromartie said. "That's the kind of guy he is. We really don't give a damn, to tell you the truth."

Okay, what kind of guy is Brady?

"An ass----.

"F--- him."

Cromartie just raised the stakes even higher for the Jets in their divisional round playoff game Sunday in Foxborough. With Ryan first taking on Brady on Monday and then Cromartie taking it off the charts, the Jets surely run the risk of raising the QB's already stated hatred of the Jets to a world-record level.

Brady will not likely respond to Cromartie. That is not his style. He will just try to burn him for four touchdowns on Sunday. Just as Bill Belichick will not be drawn into Ryan's declaration that this game is him vs. Belichick.

But Belichick and Brady hate the Jets so much that the Pats QB played the whole way in the 45-3 game. Why does Cromartie feel this way about Brady?

"That's what I think about him. I don't really give a damn about him," he said. "I don't have to play against him. I play against the receivers."

Well, Brady is the one throwing to those receivers. "Yeah, but if I beat the s--- out of his receivers, he can't throw the ball," Cromartie said.

Cromartie says Brady's antics are evident when the Jets watch the film of their games against the Patriots. "He's doing the pointing at our defensive line and stuff like that," Cromartie said. "That's the kind of a guy he is. He's a competitor, he loves what he's doing. He's going to compete. When you're competing, you are not worrying about anything else, about what anybody else is doing. You're just worried about what you have to do."

Has Brady ever tried to show up Cromartie during a game?

"Oh no," he said. "He knows better."

Cromartie said, however, he doesn't find what Brady does on the field offensive.

"Nope. He's playing football," he said. "If you're an a------, you're an a------."

One of the reasons Cromartie was happy to be traded to the Jets was so he could play against Brady and the Patriots twice a year. "Going against a future Hall of Fame quarterback two times a year, now getting a third shot at him, is something I take pride in and definitely want to do. It definitely did apply to one of my reasons being traded here," he said.

Cromartie was a rookie on the 2006 Chargers team that blew a 21-13 lead with 8:35 to go in the divisional round to the Patriots in San Diego and lost 24-21. After the game, the Chargers were upset when the Patriots were dancing on their field to celebrate. They felt disrespected.

"I hate them," Cromartie said. "I don't care. I hate them."

Brady or the Patriots?

"Both," he said.

"Everything is personal with me and the Patriots and what they did to us," Cromartie said. "So, I really don't care. I don't have too much to say about them. I'm just ready to play ball on Sunday."

After that game, LaDainian Tomlinson, now Cromartie's teammate with the Jets, got into some pushing and shoving with the Patriots. "I was very upset," L.T. said back then. "They showed no class at all, absolutely no class, and maybe it comes from their head coach."

L.T. smoothed things over with Belichick a few weeks later at the Pro Bowl.

Cromartie said he's never told Brady how he feels about him. "I let my play speak for itself," he said. "I don't need to boast, do all the pointing and doing all that stuff. I let my play speak for itself. At the end of the day, if he respects me or not, I'm going to get it some kind of way."

Cromartie was given a lecture by Ryan on the sideline Saturday night in Indianapolis after being responsible for Pierre Garcon's 57-yard touchdown. But he made up for it with a 47-yard kickoff return to the Jets' 46-yard line following Adam Vinatieri's field goal that gave the Colts a 16-14 lead with 53 seconds left. Cromartie's return created a short field for the Jets, which they cashed in with Nick Folk's 32-yard game-winning field goal on the final play of the game.

That sends the Jets to Foxborough, where Cromartie's trashing of Brady could come back to haunt him.

The Jets come off as a bunch of sore losers who talk trash. I think most of their hatred is in their own minds and is all one-sided. They see what they want to see. Yes, noone likes to lose 45-3. Talk about a team without much class...whining and crying to anyone who will listen about how bad a guy Tom Brady is and how much you hate a team after you get your butts whipped by them? Really?

I can't wait to see the Jets go down in flames this weekend. I would love to see Brady demolish them again and then hear what they have to say. And, Brady should make it a point to point at their sidelines after each score. Maybe he can even add in a new antic to get their blood boiling? If the Jets were really doing their own jobs and could hold their own against the Pats, then they wouldn't be such whiney little b****es.

The Jets are 1-1 vs. the Patriots each of the past 3 years. They have held their own against them. They aren't really whining - they just love to hear themselves talk. It's the Rex Ryan way.

To me, this is kind of refreshing. You always see athletes being all buddy-buddy with each other after games. I'm sick of the lovefest that these guys have with each other. I grew up in the age of Charles Oakley, Anthony Mason, John Starks, Reggie White, Derrick Thomas.....those guys were FIERY, and flat-out HATED their opponents. If Rex Ryan has to talk mess to motivate his team, so be it. At the end of the day, it's all mental. What plays out on the field ultimately decides who goes on, but at least these guys aren't afraid to show a little emotion, and make things personal. We've ALL complained that the Texans are just too damned vanilla.....well, this is the other side of the coin.

I actually love him AND hate him, if that makes sense. I hate him because he's got a big mouth...but I love him because he's so much fun to hate. I can't WAIT for this game on Sunday. No matter what happens, it will be entertaining.

The NFL needs more characters (besides WR's who have their own TV shows and play on losing teams).
