One In Ten Americans Thinks HTML Is a Type of Sexually Transmitted Infection

"It looks like technical writers won't be unemployed any time soon. According to a recent study reported on by the LA Times, 11% of Americans thought HTML was a sexually-transmitted disease. The study, by coupon site VoucherCloud, involved 2,392 men and women 18 years of age or older. 27% thought 'gigabyte' was a South American insect, and 23% thought MP3 was a Star Wars robot. The participants were not told that the study was specifically looking into their knowledge of tech terms. They were presented with both tech and non-tech terms and were asked to choose from three possible definitions. 18% identified 'Blu-ray' as a marine animal, and 15% thought 'software' was comfortable clothing."

Honestly the HTML question is better than I expected, it isn't as if it's a term used casually. There is still a chunk of the population that is completely computer illiterate. If you don't use computers, there is no way you are gonna know what HTML is.

I am surprised it is only 10%. There is really no reason for the average Internet user to know that HTML is a web term.

None of that study's findings and percentages are surprising to me. It isn't just due to computer illiteracy - many folks who DO know how to use a computer at a basic level don't know what HTML is because they don't need to know. Likewise with "MP3" and even "software". If a similar study were done on TV/display terms like "resolution", etc there would be similar findings.

Even people working in software development might know know what XML or HTML does.

Kinda dodges that bullet of Skynet taking over the world...

Too funny. VultureCloud, in their attempt to monetize virtually worthless customer data through publicity.

This, only 10% of people don't know what HTML is? That is good.

No. 10% thought it was a sexually transmitted disease. That does not mean the other 90% know it's a web language.

Well, in their defense, HTML does look a bit like HERP.
