One thing which is notable about certain players is the shelf life of their reputations...some seem to decline the farther their playing careers fade into memory while other players' reps seem immune to the ravages of time...A lot of this has to do with what kind of market you played in, what your style was, and what you did in the bigger games.

Larry Bird, Magic, MJ, Russell, and to a degree Wilt seem to fit into the latter category, whereas Olajuwon, Drexler, Thomas, and others seem, sadly, to fit into the former. It's odd, but seemingly inevitable. I would be willing to predict that, in another 20 years, Dream won't even be mentioned with the other top centers, but be relegated to the Moses Malone/Bill Walton level.

Another interesting twist is that some guys can come back...the Big O was being largely ignored for quite a while, but with the recent refocus on the triple double as a significant stat, he has seen his reputation regain momentum.

I would put Hakeem right behind KAREEM ABDUL JABBAR, which will make him rank No.8 on the list.

I would put Hakeem ahead of Baylor and Dr.J.

I live in Boston area and almost every knowledgeable NBA fan i have talked to says Hakeem was better, more skilled and by far the better defender. Shaq is dominant. He is a monster on offense but he is not dominant on defense. Only blind Lakers fan will say he is a great defender. I had followed hakeem and now i follow Shaq. I am a fan of both BUT if i had to pick one to go to war in a Finals game, I would bring Hakeem, simply because he would bring a complete game. Post moves, shooting, and superb team, and one one one defense.

Barkley averaged 27.3 ppg, 13.0 rpg and 5.5 apg in the '93 finals against the Bulls. If Danny Ainge hadn't given up the GW 3-pointer to Paxson he would probably have a ring. I think the Chuckster was better than Malone (he certainly had a higher peak) but his body broke down. I would say he should be given consideration as the best PF all-time. Not a bad feat for a guy about the height of Mobley.
